Of no architectural or historical interest. Not an impressive space. There's a large food hall if looking for a quick bite.

Via Rail Canada Montreal Station is quite large. We arrived here from Quebec and found our way out somewhat easily after asking a helpful staff member for directons. The station has shops of all sorts and on the day was very busy.

Opened in 1943, Montreal Central is a major transit hub. VIA Rail uses it to service its “Corridor” route; Amtrak uses the station to service a number of destinations in New York state; the Exo train services a couple of routes elsewhere in Quebec; and, major bus/transit services also operate out of the station. As such, one could rightly say Gare Centrale is a significant hub and portal through which to explore the surrounding area. We came here as part of a day trip from Ottawa on VIA Rail.
Unlike our time at the Ottawa Train Station, we actually spent a bit of time ambling about Gare Centrale upon arrival @ high noon. I was surprised at how large the train station actually is. There are a plethora of shops, services and restaurants to keep one busy while waiting for your train. As my partner and I ambled about the station, we observed a couple of bakeries featuring some tasty looking treats. “Let’s grab some when we come back,” we said. This declaration, unfortunately, didn’t exactly hold true; however, more on that in a moment.
As noted, Montreal Central is fairly large; in fact, it is recognized as the second busiest train station in the country, only behind Toronto’s Union Station. While I found the interiors of Gare Centrale to be not terribly exciting, they were still much more appealing than the station in Ottawa. Montreal Central was designed with a fine and fair mix of Art Deco and the vaguely defined “International style” of architecture. I’m not too big on the “international style” stuff, but the art deco bas-relief friezes are nice, as is the reference to “O Canada” on some of the artwork in station. The station was recognized as one of Canada’s “Historic Places” in 2010 (kind of shocked it took that long when Ottawa Station was recognized as such a mere 30 years after opening . . . another French-English cleavage?).
When we returned to Gare Centrale some six hours later (after a good, but short day exploring Old Montreal), we made our way to the aforementioned bakeshops to grab a few snack treats. Imagine our surprise to see most of the restaurants already closed, just after 6PM on a Friday!? What the heck? Good thing there’s a McDonald’s in here!
Anyway, Montreal Central Station is a nice transit hub – a good functional building with plenty of amenities. Would I consider it a tourist attraction in its own right? Well, maybe if you’re really into trains; otherwise, I’d say no. Use it for what it is: A convenient place to get from A to B or, in our case, to get to and from Ottawa and Montreal!

There are a couple of quality shops but other than that there's broken elevators, poorly organised boarding and I was honesly glad to leave on time.

My husband and I did not rent a car when we flew into Quebec City, so to get to Montreal we took the train. The train and train station was clean and everyone was very professional. If you get there 40 minutes early, I think that would be plenty of time. There is no TSA type of thing to go through. Expect to have your luggage weighed and your ticket to be verified. They have bathrooms available and offer drinks for a price and very limited food on the train. I recommend bringing snacks. When you get to Montreal, I hope you have a nicer taxi driver than we did— grumpy! We took bus 747 to the airport when it was time to go home. You can buy a bus ticket from the information center. A lot cheaper than a taxi and friendly driver. I am not sure if you can get a bus ride from the train station, but trust me it is worth looking into.

We always take VIA to Montreal, so easy and relaxing. No worries about the weather when having to drive and no parking headache. We all enjoy the train ride and there's free WIFI. Plus the station is walking distance to almost everything downtown Montreal.

Via Rail's site has a description of services available at this station - which include baggage checkroom. explore our destinations >stations > Quebec > montreal > station
Checkroom services details and restrictions are listed there: travel-info > baggage > station-checkroom
"* Only customers holding a ticket confirmed for a departure on the same day with VIA Rail or Amtrak may use the parcel checkroom service. Non-travellers cannot use this service.
* No baggage can be left in the checkroom once the trip is completed or during the night, except for bikes.
* The checkroom service cannot be offered to customers using our Air Connect service from Montreal Central Station. Since we have no information about passengers except for their name, the security department at VIA confirms that it is not possible to offer this service to this clientele."

I have to meet someone in the station and neither of us are familiar with the station. Is there some obvious landmark that we can use to find one another? (e.g. some stns have giant clocks). Thanks in advance.

Hello! We are traveling to Montreal in April 2020 and plan on staying a few nights, then leaving our car in Montreal and taking the train to Ottawa for a few days. Do you know of any overnight parking garages close to Gare Centrale? Thanks in advance!

We arrived at that time (husband and wife in reasonable shape in our early 50s) and we just walked to our hotel (about 10 blocks). Apart from a few rough sidewalks, we never found it threatening in any way.

Quisiera saber si existe alguna opción para dejar mi equipaje en la estación de Montreal o algún lugar cercano. También me gustaría recomendaciones de alguna compañía de renta de poquet wifi con buen precio. Agradezco la atención.
