This open air museum is free to enter and is located at the end of canal Lachine. There are numerous structures at permanent display here which may require a few hours to explore thoroughly. The area is very popular with locals on a weekend for picnics and gathering. If you want to have more space and peace to explore, it's better to go during the day.

The buildings located at this museum house important artifacts from the Amerindians, the French and the British.
One building was originally built as a trading post. We were informed it is the oldest building in Montreal and built in 1669 of stone (probably explaining its survival).
The other building was a home that now houses many interesting artifacts. A rare Amerindian mortar and pestle is on display, as well as other items that were found around the home from archeological digs.
The take away from this museum is the insight it provides about the strategic importance of this site from the 1600's to the 1800's for trade and the commercial development of Montreal and Canada.
Note that admission is free.

Just a short drive from downtown and gorgeous anytime of year, this waterfront park and outdoor art exhibit is spectacular. You could spend an entire day here, bring a picnic, a frisbee and a towel to lie on and it's as if you are hours away from downtown surrounded by nature at its finest.
In the summer you can walk to several different ice cream shops and the fur trade museum is also open on weekends.

We loved our visit to the Lachine Museum! It really is a hidden gem for both contemporary art buffs and history enthusiasts. As a bonus, it's right by the water. After your visit, I suggest just taking a stroll, the view is gorgeous. Our guide was super informative, friendly, and answered all our questions. We came from out of town and she even suggested where we should go eat afterwards--which was awesome! My favourite part of the tour was seeing the Lisette Lemieux exhibit, « L’essence des mots ». I loved the way she explored how language is passed on and built through the senses. Her work is visually stunning and much of her pieces have really interesting stories behind them, we were so glad our guide filled us in on these! This place really has something for everyone. There's a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden with a focus on Quebec artists and many archeological artifacts regarding the history of the surrounding area. I also picture this museum being perfect for a school field trip. Would definitely visit again!

Parc Rene-Levesque is a municipal park on an small peninsula between the Lachine Canal and the Lake Saint-Louis portion of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal.
The park contains 38 large modern-art sculptures in a beautiful park setting. The park was very popular the morning we visited, with dozens of runners, walkers, strollers, and bike-riders traveling on the path on the perimeter of the park.
The walking path takes you along the water and past each of these large sculptures, each of which is described in French and English on nearby plaques.
The art is considered to be part of the nearby Musee de Lachine.
There is a small fee for the nearby parking lot.

Hello Lyle B,
Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. We’re very glad to hear you enjoyed strolling through our sculpture garden in the René-Lévesque Park. You’ll have to take the time to explore the other two sectors during your next visit! Our sculptures can also be found on the site of the museum and in Lachine’s waterfront parks. We are confident the view and the artworks would impress you.
Till next time!

Shouldn't take you more than half an hour to visit. Informative (although only signed in French) but the staff is bilingual and very helpful. There's also an outdoor sculpture garden of mostly Quebecois artists.

On the day we went, the Lachine Museum was closed. However, we very much enjoyed the Lachine Center, which had it's own museum area in which we could read about the history of the canal, and see pictures and displays related to the history. In addition, local artists' work was hanging on all the walls (for sale), and there was a nice cafe with good, inexpensive eats. Lots of seating available, both inside and out. And clean, well-stocked bathrooms. We also walked down Parc Rene-Levesque and enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful sculptures in the "Musee Plein Air de Lachine." Roller blade rentals are available at the park and it's also a great place for riding bikes.
