A fabulous area that seems to have hints of New Orleans about it. Lots of shops and restaurants to see and visit, to say nothing of the bars and restaurants

North America’s oldest street, Petit Champlain, is just as charming as described in words and pictures. But it’s also extremely crowded and outrageously expensive.
A recommendation would be to buy a (relatively) cheap to-go coffee somewhere and head to one of the comfy chairs in Urban Garden, located at the far end of the street.
Here, you can sit for free among flowers and fresh herbs, enjoying the neighborhood without being overcharged at a café or restaurant on the main street.

We spent 24 hours in Quebec City, soaked up the history, walked the cobblestone streets and admired the architecture. This is near the location of where you catch the funicular to the top of the walled city. If you go early in the day as we did like before 10AM, you will avoid the hoards of tourists and crowded streets. At this time the streets are still nearly empty and the walking is much more pleasant.

Although a tourist, the Petit Champlain district is a must-see in Quebec City, which is the oldest city in North America, founded in 1608. Take advantage of it to visit Notre Dame des Victoires church, a church that is directly in little Champlain. I love going.

Our family of 5, all adults, visited Quebec City last month. Rue du Petit-Champlain is a must see street. Amazing architecture , murals, art, restaurants, and shopping. Our family walked through neighborhoods and down the sloped sidewalks to reach the Lower Town and then road the Funiculaire de Vieux back up to Dufferin Terrace.

Once the bustling capital of New France, the Quartier Petit Champlain is arguably the most beautiful area of the city. Wandering the narrow streets that are laced between the historic buildings makes you feel like you are in the heart of an old European City.
The Quartier Petit Champlain is the oldest shopping district in North America and a great place to buy souvenirs for your friends. Here, boutique shops and cozy cafes spill out of restored houses.
A fun fact: One of the neighborhood's houses belonged to Louis Jolliet, the French-Canadian explorer credited with discovering the Mississippi River. The stone structures that line the pedestrian-only streets now house a wide variety of shops, services, and restaurants. This is the perfect place to visit for strolling and meandering, and it's a truly lovely area year-round.
Québec-cuisine restaurants and bistros, art galleries, and a generous assortment of sweets shops offering everything from handcrafted fudge and nougat to a stylish Crêperie
Restroom: Ask anyone and they can point you in the right direction, its 1 level down on the main road level. What a relief finding one when you need it

Quebec city is really beautiful, diving into this street even if you do not want to buy anything makes you relax just by observing the many shops and art galleries.

Walked in the Petit Champlain lately. This street is very cute, there are different shops around to visit, a few restaurant. The atmosphere is just wonderful. I strongly suggest you go up the stairs and stop by a restaurant on the stairs location to have a wonderful view. You will not regret!

One of the most photogenic streets in Québec City was filled with shops and restaurants. In April there wasn’t much crowds so it was pleasant to stroll through.
There were a couple of unique addresses ending in 1/2 instead of a whole number. We could not figure out how one door qualified as a 1/2 versus others.

We went to the Quartier du Petit-Champlain in the evening on December 30, 2023 as well as in February 2024. Even if there was no snow on December 30, 2023, the numerous decorations made us somewhat forget this detail. In the Petit-Champlain district, you can observe three staircases: the Casse-Cou staircase, the Quai-du-Roi staircase and the C-de-Sac staircase.
Our starting point for the day in February 2024 was to descend the 398 steps of the Cap Blanc staircase, to follow the St. Lawrence River via Champlain Street and to end our walk in the Quartier du Petit Champlain.
Rue Champlain (Cap-Blanc) is a street with several old houses that date from the time of the Irish neighborhood. The imposing Cap aux Diamants, called Cap Blanc in winter, means that it is on this street that the sun sets the earliest. So, I suggest you take the short journey from the Cap-Blanc staircase. After Champlain Street, you will walk along a short stretch of Champlain Boulevard to finish your hike on Rue du Petit-Champlain located in Old Quebec.
This magnificent emblematic street is pedestrianized. There you will find several shops, restaurants as well as several staircases to directly access Champlain Boulevard. Narrow stairs are inserted between old houses. The prettiest is the one topped by a wrought iron arch with a magnificent view of the Château Frontenac. This staircase was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. Félix-Leclerc Park, for its part, is a gathering place beautifully designed according to the themes of the season.
From the Petit-Champlain district, it is easy to get to Place Royale and the Notre-Dame des Victoires church built in 1688. Don't miss out on seeing the small Unesco park, the fresco of Quebecois and the Royal Battery.

Do you know how long the Christmas decorations stay up after Christmas? The markets close Dec 23, we will not be there until after Christmas and 1st week of Jan. Thanks
Skrevet 5. november 2022

I’m not sure if I’ve just missed the umbrella’s or do they take them down for winter?
Skrevet 21. oktober 2018
They are in a little corner. They were being repaired last week, but not getting taken down. They are behind the building with the red roof near the ferry terminal.

My mother will be in a lightweight push wheelchair. Would it be possible to maneuver this area?
Skrevet 25. september 2018
The streets are paved with Cobble Stones and are a bit hilly so she might find manoeuvring the area a bit challenging.

What are the buses or trains that I could take from Toronto to Petit Champlain???
Skrevet 18. november 2017
If you prefer by bus or train to Old Quebec City, I suggest you better join bus tour in Toronto. The price is affordable/reasonable, (not expensive). They include accommodation (3.5-5 star), is really a good deal,

Hello, I would like to know if the shops are open in the evening in summer, we will be there in late august and we have limited time to visit the city.
thank you in advance

Hi! When do they put the Christmas lights up at Rue du Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale? We're thinking about going over Thanksgiving (November 23-26) in 2017, but we don't want to go if everything is not decorated yet.
Thanks!
Skrevet 5. desember 2016
We were there November 10-12 and they were putting up the decorations and setting up the Christmas village shops on the square. At Thanksgiving they will be in full swing for Christmas
