We booked online, which worked well for booking the bus tour within the preserve. We arrived a bit early, checked out the small store, and boarded the bus. It was more full than I expected, but the seating was comfortable.
The driver stopped at each animal area, so that everyone could get out and take photos. She was a wealth of information, and told enjoyable stories. Most of the animals were visible from the road.
We saw lots of people walking through the preserve, which would also be a great way to see the animals, if you have the stamina to walk that far.
Overall it’s a great way to view lots of northern wildlife.

The people running the admission office and the bus tour guide were so welcoming and kind. I feel bad posting a poor review but this experience was a- underwhelming and b- somewhat sad. I do believe this preserve is trying to do good things and their hearts are on the right place. For me, it was too close to a petting zoo,

Our guide from The Northern Lights Resort was very knowledgeable so we enjoyed our tour very much. The only animal who didn’t make an appearance was the Lynx.

- our guide came earlier than originally arranged to the hotel, and we weren’t ready. Then he drove past without stopping at the hotel the next time he drove down the street. The third pass, he picked us up. He was a worker from Japan named Shungo, and some of the time he clearly did not know what he was talking about. He kept rambling on about various topics, and much of what he said was false! You’d think that the guide would be properly educated on what he is telling the paying guests:
- Shungo said the Yukon Quest dog race would be taking place in a week’s time. WRONG, it already finished a couple days before, and we went to the awards ceremony. (I shouted out in the bus that it had already taken place and he just re-stated that it would be happening in a few days)
- Shungo said all the dog teams start with 14 dogs. WRONG The teams had anywhere from 8-12 dogs per team.
- We past some snow sculptures being started in the park. He said they were for the Yukon Quest. NO, they are for the Rendezvous festival that was the week after the Yukon Quest.
- He said that in 1942 the Alaska Highway was constructed, and the U.S. built their side, and the Canadians built their part to the border, and it was amazing that the two sides met because the U.S. uses standard measurement and the Canadians use metric! WRONG Both Canada and the U.S. used the standard system until 1970, when Canada changed to metric. ..and, you’d think that it would be pretty easy to connect two roads on either side of the border. - They are a pretty large excavation and build.
- He kept referring to groups of animals as Deers, Sheeps, Mooses, Bisons, when the plural of Deer is still Deer. One deer, or a herd of deer. Not deers. The same goes for the others. Just annoying to keep hearing it.

Lovely way to spend a few hours. Got to see all the animals (except the very shy arctic fox) in their native environments. Really impressed with the different habitats available in such a compact drivable area. The animals looked well cared for and the information available about each of them was nicely presented. Great job!

This is a lovely way to see animals in very large fields that is close to a natural habitat. I was very impressed with the facility and the animals appear healthy and have lots of room to roam about. The animals look healthy and it was nice to be able to view them up close.

We walked the loop and it was very peaceful and an enjoyable experience. Got to see all the animals at feeding time. You can tell they are happy and well fed with lots of room to roam. A must do if you are an animal lover and I got to see most up close. Well maintained grounds and bathrooms

We chose the driving tour and it was the best decision. The bus stops to get out and see the animals while the guide explains about the animals, habitat, etc. You can see all the Northen animals. All the staff are super nice, friendly and knowledgeable. I defenitely recommend the tour!

I was wondering how bad the mosquitoes and other biting bugs are this year if we choose to walk?

I see that this is a 5 km walking tour. I am currently on the start of a journey to fitness, and while I hope to be in better shape for Sept-Oct of this year, I'm wondering about how challenging the actual walk is. Thanks!

I'm probably in the same boat as you! I don't feel like anyone who got driven around could comment accurately ;)
We walked the 5km loop and for the most part it was pretty flat, but there are some steep-ish parts and there was one portion in particular that I was glad we had come the clockwise way around, rather than the counter-clockwise route as it was pretty steep, and I wouldn't have wanted to climb UP that. Going down was fine!
The piece I'm referring to is the loop where the little arctic foxes, lynx, and mountain goats are. The whole trail looks sort of like a figure eight - it's the loop on the left-hand side of the map. I would recommend going clock-wise around this portion - so take a hard left and go past the muskox and mountain goats first, rather than the moose first. There are still some uphill bits going clockwise, but that way you go DOWN the big steep bit, rather than UP it! And just take it at your own pace, and stop and look at the animals along the way - they're a great excuse to catch your breath! You'll feel great about having walked the whole thing afterwards, good luck!! :)

Hello! I would have loved to do this tour on November 10 but I see that the date is not available... any reason?
It's unfortunately the only date I will be in that area and your tour seems fabulous.

Hi Sophie,
Thanks very much for your questions. Unfortunately we are indeed closed to the public on Thursdays. Our winter hours are Fri-Sun but you can contact one of our lovely travel partners including Northern Tales or Arctic Range to book a package including a visit to the YWP outside those dates. We also have a special tour called an Exclusive Experience you could look into via our website - it might suit your interests well.
Hope we can welcome you to the YWP through either of these options. Thank you very much for your interest in visiting us. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to give me a call or email me.
