There were no turtles. The turtles breeding season is through October to March. Tourists are not allowed on the beach during this season when the female turtles come to the shore to lay the eggs. The eggs are picked up and hatched in a hatchery and the the babies are released in the ocean. So effectively you get to see only like 2-3 babies being released in the water and that too if you are lucky

People comes from all over India to watch these turtle's hatching and watch their first journey towards the ocean. This eye witness is really life time memory.

A place you should visit only during the turtle hatching season if at all. Nothing great otherwise, there are many pristine beaches further down the Kokan strip

Velas Beach is famous in Maharashtra for Turtle Festival. This festival is arranged by forest department, village panchayat and Kasav Mitramandal. It's an amazing effort to conserve Olive Ridley turtles and travelers get to see the first journey of tiny turtles hatching and making their way to the sea. Also, efforts has been taken for local community as there are no resorts/ hotels around, travelers has to accommodate in home stays which itself is an amazing experience and you will definitely enjoy the local food.
I visited Velas Turtle Festival twice, once in 2015 and then in 2019 with a group. You can contact them at +91 82907-22922(Pranav). It's good to travel with a group as Velas has network connectivity issue and it's difficult to coordinate for home stays. With the time, it has gained lot of popularity and the place is filled up very fast. There are around 45 home stays in Velas.

Velas Beach is famous beach specially for turtle and turtle festival in March/ April. Velas is nice little village, with calmness and simplicity. Away from the crowd, gives you maximum relaxation. A must visit if you are a nature lover and photographer.
Actually, this beach is approx 50 km away from Diveagar. For reaching Velas Beach, from Diveagar, route is via Srivardhane, Harihareshwaran and taking Ferry from Bagmandala. to Vesvi. From bagmandla we took our Car also on the the ferry through jetty as we have to cross savitri river. From Vesvi to Velas, direct route was closed due to some repairing work, so we had to take long route via Gudeghar and Bankot. Route from Vesnvi to Velas was not very good and reaching to Velas was little tough. This area is unexplored and very few tourists reach here. Mobile signal was unavailable most of the time. From Pune distance is approx 200 km via Varand chat, Bhor. The path to reach Velas is all surrounded by see and amazing wind.
Went here in Dec last week and stayed overnight at a homestay. A good experience staying at the homestay enjoying simple home food by very hospitable hosts. Incidentally, our hosts were owner of Spice trees including Black Pepper, Cinnamon, BayLeaf, Mace, Betel Nut etc. So we visited and enjoyed all these.
