We visited Shoreham Fort on a sunny November day and were impressed by the amount of information about it on the several information boards at the site. Built in the late 1850s at a time of raised tension with France it was one of a number of strategically placed forts designed to discourage any thoughts the French might be having about an attack. It must have worked as they didn't try it! So the fort never fired a shot in anger.
Most of the fort is intact, though unfortunately the barrack block that also formed the landward defences has been demolished.
Its free to access from the car park next to it, and is also at the end of the beachside boardwalk, plus there are some picnic tables, and a mobile snack bar nearby when we visited.
Its well worth a visit, about half an hour is sufficient but worth combining with a walk along the boardwalk.

We really enjoyed reading the information boards at Shoreham Fort today. Together with the wild flowers on the beach , the boardwalk and the interesting town with lots of individual shops and cafes Shoreham on Sea has a lot to offer.

For about three years now I've been thinking about visiting the fort on & off; last Monday I finally got round to visiting with my wife.

It's a nice little place and we spent about half an hour or so looking round it. It's one of those places, you can happily kill about an hour here having a nice walk around and enjoying the views if you're in the area with not much else to do but it's possibly not worth making too much effort to make a visit.

Great that you've managed to visit us, such a shame that you've visited when we've been closed due to Covid. Please do keep an eye on our website and social media to see when we are open and join us for tour so that we can share the fort's diverse and unique history with you :) Look forward to meeting you and your wife when the world straightens out :)

Finally visited Shoreham Fort with my wife after thinking about it on and off for the last few years.

It's a nice little place to look around with good views. It's worth a visit if you're in the area and have a spare hour or so with nothing else to do but I wouldn't say it's worth too much effort to make a visit.

Three years ago I reviewed the fort making favourable comparisons with how it was in my childhood. Unfortunately I couldn’t really point to any real progress in restoration since then. The flood defence works along both sides of the river have now finished but this seems to have also resulted in a tightening in local parking restrictions and a revamp of the car park almost as if an increase in parking revenue seemed to be regarded as a good idea. If you are planning a visit I would suggest leaving your car in the free car park in Harbour Way which is only a hundred metres away. It’s still an interesting historic place for a brief visit but unfortunately not likely to be in the top rank of places to visit locally any time soon. That’s a shame but I hope the future will treat the old fort sympathetically.

The ruins of the fort have been partially restored and there is quite a bit here to see. The local society have done a very good job of making this area accessible - you can walk all around it and then up steps to the sea facing ramparts. There are large information boards which tell you a lot about the forts history and usage, It is sited at the entrance to the port of Shoreham (opposite the light house and RNLI station) and you can go west along the beach. The fort isn't very wheelchair friendly as such - you can get around if the ground is dry. On the beach there is a board walk for a good distance for wheelchairs or just those who don't want to walk on pebbles. There is some on-road parking in the area, but also a pay and display car park next to the fort.

A bit of a letdown.

It is just a mound of earth and a few fortified walls.
I had a much more interesting time taking a few steps & talking to the people on duty at the adjacent Coastguard station & exploring the nearby harbour.
