Shimla has plenty of religious places, but the Bhimkali temple is one of its kind and such architecture is not found anywhere in Himachal. The temple is in Sarahan, which is around 155 km from Shimla.

It is not allowed to carry cameras, phones,s and even leather items inside the main courtyard of the temple. They provide a locker facility to keep your belongings. The temple is quite huge and the main idol of Bhimkali Devi is kept in the topmost courtyard.

Second door is made of wood but its carved with silver foil. Once you cross this door, that is the last point till where cameras are allowed, which needs to be kept in the provided lockers

Sri Bhimakali Temple is one of the main attractions of Sarahan. It is an ancient temple which is not only religiously important but also boasts of stunning architecture and intricate wooden artwork. The temple stands tall amongst the quaint surroundings of Sarahan overlooking the Shrikhand range. The temple premises has its own boarding and lodging facilities which are cheap, affordable and hygenic. The campus also has another small temple of God Narsinh. Worth a visit if you love art and architecture of India.

This is a very beautiful temple. We went in afternoon and it was so quite and peaceful. The temple is made of bricks joined with wood, a true Himachali style architecture. It was quite cozy as well from inside.
Cameras are actually not allowed inside the temple, but I’m adding pics which we clicked from outside!

Sri Bhimakali Temple is the main attraction of Sarahan. It is one of the 51 Sati Peethas where the right ear of Sati Mata was dropped.

The temple is very very well maintained. The premises are clean. The main temple of Goddess Bhimakali is basically made of wood. You can take photos everywhere in the temple except the main one. You have to put your camera, mobile and leathered belongings outside the 'Simha Prouda' ( Entrance to the main temple) and have to enter the temple covering your head. The narrow stairs lead to the deity.

Apart from the Bhimakali Ji temple, there are temples of Lord Shiva, Lord Narasimha and Langkarbeej Ji . There ia a small museum and a rest house too in the premises.

Your mind will definitely become cool once you enter the temple premise. Enjoy the beauty of the surrounding Himalayas along with the ring of temple bells as a perfect background music !

The journey to this place is a 6 hour drive one way from Shimla so if you are planning a visit please start early in the morning at 5am. There is aarti done twice in a day 9am and 6pm.( during winters ).
There is a lot of history to this temple. This temple is also the ancestory temple of the king of himachal (kul devi ). This temple has been newly constructed and is made of wood. This gives a very warm exterior . The exterior architecture has an influence of Tibetian and Hindu architecture. After entering the temple one has to keep all cameras, phones, bags, socks, belts in a locker. The second climb leads to two temples The one on the right is old and has the original bhima kali where the royal family goes during special ocassions and havan. The new temple on the right built at a cost of 2 crores INR is the one open for public. There are two floors of the temple. The bottom layer has the kali ( unmarried )and the first floor has the bigger bhima kali statue depicting ( married state ). The idol is al in silver and beautifully decorated with jewellery. Very bright, positive and yet powerful shakti peeth. It is peaceful, quiet and one can offer prayers and spend some quiet time. History has that there is an underground tunnel connecting the temple to a village nearby. This visit will not be complete without visiting the Bhairon temple in the courtyard complex.
Overall an amazing experience.

Sri Bhima Kali Ji Temple - which is what Sarahan is all about.

One of the major Shaktipeeths or Shaktipeethas or 'Places of Strength', where the Devi or Goddess appeared.

Legends are said to be recorded in the ancient texts of the "Markandey Purana" and the "Durgaq Shaptshatti".

Do not miss to note the interlocked wooden beams encasing Ashlar worked stone, Shikhara style of temples.

Old Temple dedicated to Lord Narasingh (also spelt as Narasimha or Narusimha).

After a stride over Masoi's stone, comes the second courtyard and the right hand side is lined with rooms of the erstwhile rulers. There is a temple dedicated to Bhairon and then the main focus of the complex, the temple of Bhimakali.

Now locked and used as a repository, the older temple has a weathered and distinguished look.

During the devastating earthquake of 1905, it tilted towards a side but the inherent elasticity of the wood-beam structure prevented major damage. A later earthquake straightened the plumb to an extent. The foundations of this remarkable building are said to rest three-storeys deep, and now a disused tunnel connects it to the village of Ranwin, a kilometre away. Through this underground passage, the pundits would enter and leave the temple.

Bhimalkali mata temple is at Sarahan (2165 metres above sea level), we had Darshan as well as Prasad in temple. Darshan is free, but Prasad is paid (Rs.70 per plate), very nominal charges, prepared by temple people, but honestly very hygienic and tasty. I would suggest to have lunch here rather than eating at any road side restaurants.

Bhima Kali or Bhima Devi temple is one of 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple is built in an Indo-Tibetan style of architecture. Alternate rows of grooved and interlocked stones and wood provide strength to the walls. Thick walls with lower roofs found in typical mountainous region buildings provide warmth during winters. Wood carvings on the walls of the temple are just fabulous. The place is quiet; the deity is situated on the top floor of the temple. All floors have a wooden staircase.
