My husband and I visit Sunnycroft frequently so decided to visit for the 'open doors and drawers' weekend. Sunnycroft is a friendly very interesting house with good gardens and, especially if you have children, interesting because it has games for anyone to play on the lawn.
BUT as a special weekend, the open drawers were very few and some of the doors which are usually open, were closed. Such as the large wardrobes in the biggest bedroom.
Disappointing that this property is rarely open now. Time that they sorted it out.
WE DID NOT VISIT IN AUGUST BUT HAD TO PUT A DATE IN TO DO A REVIEW

We had wanted to visit Sunnycroft, but it has been closed since lockdown, but as luck would have it they are reopening on certain weekends from May, and we were in luck and visited on Sunday May 8th, I booked our slot online, and as we are National Trust members it was free for us.
Firstly it is just on an every day street. if there was no sign saying that it is a National Trust property you would never know, there is a small car park and we were greeted and shown where to go, you walk through a wonderful tree lined path to the house.
What made this house so special is that until quite recently it was lived in, and all the furnishings are what was left in the house when it was taken over by the trust, in 1997, lots of arts and crafts. You can feel the Lander family still living there, with beautiful wallpaper, tiled floors, a medicine cabinet full of items you will recognise like 4711 perfume, pepsident toothpaste, vick's menthol rub to name just a few. Lots of needle work to be seen, including the gold thread used for our present queen's robes for her coronation, so very apt.
The toilets are open, but alas the cafe has had to close, nice garden to sit in on a nice day, lots of interesting things to see too many to mention, and the guides are very knowledgeable, and friendly a must if you are in the area and the are open

2 Parents - 2 Children £40 for an average 8 min visit in and out the doors. Pleasant enough but this is very expensive. You have to wait in your car to be taken in, no forest walk. I would not recommend

Lovely house, lovely staff, however the Father Christmas although he seemed lovely his outfit was awful. Quite disappointed - my 8 year old walked out and said ‘that wasn’t the real Father Christmas was it’.
It cost £55 for 3 children and 2 adults - we could have gone to cheaper places but we chose national trust as we thought Santa would be good - very disappointed.
Santa seemed a very nice man but he was let down by completely fake beard and hair and suit.

Is it now closed permanently for visitors? No diary available for 2022 on National Trust website.
So sad about the closure of cafe. When it was run by volunteers it was very successful.
National Trust needs to be more open about the future plans for Sunnycroft and it's website should give us a clue.

So difficult to pick one thing as a favourite part of our visit. The house is stunning, the gardens are a joy and the whole NT team on site were SO knowledgeable and friendly

Visited as a group of five. Arrived early so explored the gardens, had game croquet on the lawn and ate picnic lunch. Our guide Mary said she was new to Sunnycroft but wouldn’t have known as she was extremely informative, very pleasant. Lovely to see as house would have been through the different owners times. Excellent exhibits throughout the house. The gentleman dressed of the period very friendly and delighted in telling us about the vehicle in the garage. Very impressed and will return once the conservatory is renovated.

House has a really welcoming atmosphere. You can really feel this was a family home. The gardens and orchard are good too. Only disappointment was that the cafe was permanently closed. It used to be particularly good to sit on the veranda and have afternoon tea, just like the family who owned the house would have done

A fascinating glimpse into the life of a Victorian mini-estate typically built for captains of industry who wished to reside in a semi-rural location away from their place of work. As the guides told us, many were later demolished for housing or turned into residential homes or flats, so to have this perfectly preserved example is rare indeed. Thanks to the thrifty nature of the Lander family, much has been retained of the original fabric and furnishings of the house - even where improvements were made such as a modern sink other areas of the same room were left untouched. A real step back in time experience. But come on National Trust how about re-opening the tea room - surely a must for any visitor - and perhaps a shop. You might argue that the volume of visitors doesn't warrant it, but how can you expect numbers to increase if you don't have the facilities? A final note of appreciation for the excellent guides and other staff members who display an obvious love of the building and the history it records.
