Nestled within the verdant outskirts of Mumbai, Karnala Bird Sanctuary beckons with its understated elegance, providing a tranquil retreat for those seeking respite from the urban bustle. This sanctuary effortlessly blends natural beauty with avian charm, creating an enchanting experience for visitors.

Upon entry, a gentle symphony of rustling leaves and melodious bird calls welcomes guests into a world apart from the city's chaos. The meticulously curated trails wind through lush greenery, inviting nature lovers and casual wanderers alike to immerse themselves in the sanctuary's serene ambiance.

Karnala's true allure lies in its rich avian population. A kaleidoscope of vibrant feathers graces the sanctuary, from the ethereal Indian paradise flycatcher to the soulful notes of the Malabar Whistling Thrush. The sanctuary's charm deepens during migratory seasons, offering enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness nature's grand spectacle.

Ascending the trails reveals the Karnala Fort, a historic gem atop a verdant hill. The moderately challenging trek rewards explorers with panoramic vistas, while the fort's ancient remnants add a touch of nostalgia to the journey.

Thoughtfully placed signboards guide visitors along the trails, imparting knowledge about the diverse flora and fauna that call Karnala home. The sanctuary's amiable staff further enrich the experience, willingly sharing insights into the sanctuary's ecological tapestry.

For those seeking a leisurely escape, Karnala offers idyllic picnic spots surrounded by nature's tranquility. Families can bask in the verdant embrace, creating cherished memories amidst the sanctuary's natural allure. Children, in particular, can partake in educational activities thoughtfully organized by the sanctuary.

While Karnala Bird Sanctuary excels in natural charm, amenities such as restroom facilities and recreational areas could be enhanced to elevate the overall visitor experience. Additionally, a reminder for guests to bring their refreshments would ensure a seamless visit.

In summation, Karnala Bird Sanctuary stands as an elegant haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Its harmonious blend of avian wonders, well-maintained trails, and historical mystique promise a captivating experience for all who venture within. With a touch of refinement in amenities, Karnala has the potential to evolve into a quintessential sanctuary for nature lovers in Mumbai.

We decided to visit the Karnal Bird Sanctuary, which also hosts the Karnal Fort, on 14th February 2023. We took an early morning local train in Mumbai from Chembur to Panvel (approximately 45 minutes ride), which cost me around Rs. 30 for the Return ticket. On reaching Panvel at around 8 a.m. in the morning, We walked to the bus stand, which is around 700-800 meters from the railway station. If you don't want to walk, you can easily take an auto to the bus stand, which costs around Rs. 40 for the trip. There are options also available to take direct auto from Panvel station to the sanctuary, but it will cost around Rs. 250-300 per side. We took the option of the bus, which is more economical and costs around Rs. 20 per head, and is approximately 8-10 km.

Once we reached the entrance gate, we had to take a ticket which cost around Rs. 60 per head. As it was a weekday, the place had hardly any crowd. There are two small restaurants within 200-400 meters inside the entrance. However, as it was early 9:30 a.m., none of them were open at that time. It took us around 2-2.5 hours to complete the ascend to the fort, which is roughly around 2kms. At times the climb is steep, especially during the initial phase, and could be extremely tiring if you are a beginner. We reached the fort at the mountaintop at around 12:30 p.m., where we rested for 30-45 minutes. The view from the top was worth every effort put into the climb, and the breeze, even during the daytime, was cool and relaxing. Unfortunately, the fort was closed to tourists at the time of my visit due to some repair work, so it is better to check it once before planning. We could only climb to the base of the fort.

The return was rather smooth, and it took us hardly 1-1:30 hours to return from the karnala fort. At the bottom, we took some rest and had our lunch at one of the restaurants. The price was decent, and the taste of the food was okay, considering the limited options available there.

While returning, we found it difficult to get the bus to Panvel Station, as it was a highway, as no bus was stopping in the middle of it. Luckily, we found a traveler bus that agreed to drop us directly to Chembur for Rs. 50 per head. However, not always would such options be available, and hence it is better to be prepared to wait good enough time for a bus or just take an auto which again will be costly.

It is a beautiful place near Mumbai. The trek to the Karnala Fort is short ~3-4 kms hike. At places gruelling, but mostly easy. You can find aged people as well as kids doing the hike. The view from the top is breath-taking.
Though was disappointed, as could hardly see any birds.

Try visiting on a weekday. The crowd shall be less. I went on a Sunday. The crowd was maddening.

Regards

It is great place for picnic with friends or family. Good trekking trail for beginners. The sunrise is amazing from the hilltop. One should visit this bird sanctuary during monsoon for amazing views and exotic birds. Extra charges for using DSLR and bird watching so plan accordingly.

Good day outing. Treat this as a nature trail rather than bird spotting.
Food was simple and enjoyed the batata wada and misal pav.
There is a Fort which can be reached via a 1.5 hr trek and for that, one has ro reach Karnala before 1 p.m.

All in all, a good day outing with children.

Visited Karnala Bird Sanctuary to participate in Bird Count organised by forest department and Green Works Trust. Located just outside the Mumbai Limits near panvel. Sanctuary has an historical remains of Karnala Fort.

The sanctuary is classified under IBA (Important Bird Area).100+ birds species can be found here.

It's quite a popular destination for bird watchers and trekkers. The jungle of Karnala is quite dense, and not very large.

There is Small restaurant run by Local females group... The food was excellent in taste and quite reasonably priced.

Note to the visitors- When visiting any natural forest area, kindly please keep clean and do not throw plastic or anything with in the area, use garbage bins.

Today i.e. 27th September we drove to Karnala Bird Sanctuary and it is closed due to COVID restrictions.

Pls do not drive thinking it is open, it is closed.

Prior to Covid it is open on all days as per the guard at the gate.

Tip:

The exit on the highway is a small left one without any signage so turn on the maps and then take the exit. We had overshot it and then had to reverse, be careful as no signage and we were using Maps.

It is a good place to trek but be ready to face broken railing and dangerous steps in some parts. No view of birds at all.
