An enjoyable boat trip to the island. A walkway tour with a great young tour guide. Some sad stories re Mike the Orangutan who died of depression after losing a fight with another alpha male. Mike was aged 43. Adam son now not with other Orangutans and looks to have similar depression symptoms. Playground legacy being built for Mike’s many children. Orangutan Island was established in 2000. Orangutans are rescued from ill treatment in villages. When aged 18 taken to local island for one month to be self sufficient. If yes - released back to Borneo if not go back to reservation. A must visit location.

It is not what we expected, after the experience with orangutans in Borneo. The guide did not explain anything to us, he just accompanied us. And how important the orangutans were, very sad. We saw a family of three members locked up and another male locked up, as if they were in a large cage at a zoo.

This was our 2nd visit following a previous trip in 2019.
I am disappointed to have to say that we did not enjoy our latest visit. Some of the issues lie with the foundation whilst others are beyond their control.
We had wanted to arrive for the 1st boat at 9 but we were told this was cancelled and we therefore arrive around 10, by this time there were a number of groups already visiting. The groups were large and very very noisy, exactly what we had wanted to avoid.
Additionally we only saw 4 orang-utans, all of which looked very lethargic. We also noticed that the foundation have installed electric inner fencing, we were told to stop fighting between the orang-utans which is understandable however the effect is to create a 'zoo like' atmosphere which wasn't the case in 2019.
We visited with our family and we had told them great things about the foundation, sadly the reality was far from that. My memory of the latest trip will be of noise, sad orang-utans and wire fencing.

We have seen Orang Utan in Borneo, but were unaware that there was any in Penang, until reading about the work of the Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation.

The Island is a 3 hour return trip from Georgetown and was one of the most fabulous experiences we have had. You are able to observe these amazing animals up close and interact with them including the dominant male - BJ and dominant female Baboon plus their offspring. The care of these beautiful animals is down to the staff and volunteers at Orang Utan Island and their passion, dedication and knowledge is outstanding. The Island needs your support as they survive on donations. Please go and visit them and support their critical work in saving these marvellous creatures

The Orang Utan there is healthy and they have stories behind their reason being here. Rehabilitation is needed as they could no longer survive in the wild themselves, caretakers were also very friendly and have lots of patience in giving answers to my many questions - thanks for being a nanny!

This is a conservation initiative that looks to be just treading water financially at the moment but will hopefully survive as it very much deserves to.

It's a lovely 15 minute boat ride across a large attractive lake and you are given a highly informative and fascinating guided tour of part of the sanctuary where you are the caged one in the 200m long visitor walkway, but as a result are able to get very close to these wonderful animals in a way that is not threatening or disturbing to them.

This is not a zoo - it's a conservation facility doing valuable work for the welfare of this threatened species, so don't go expecting to be entertained. You might not see all of the orangutans living there. Nevertheless, we saw half a dozen of them and it was a hugely enjoyable as well as educational experience for all of us, especially our young son who loved the chance to pass fruit to a couple of the orangutans.

Currently (July 2020) they are open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. Note that google maps has the location slightly wrong (as does Waze if you're driving there). You need to head to Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, which is where the boat leaves from. You can park for free there and there's a nice, excellent value café in the resort where you can get something to eat or drink on the way there or back.

We really appreciate this ex-situ conservation effort run by OUI to save Orangutan – a Malay word literally means ‘man of the forest’. The staff of OUI are well-trained and very passionate and dedicated to their work. The island nestled within the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, Semanggol Perak. It is about 46-minute drive from Penang. We arrived at around 9.30am and took a 20-minute boat ride to Orang Utan Island. It was very informative guided tour. There were 16 Orangutan kept at OUI but we only saw only 6. They were quite inactive after breakfast and would be hiding in the trees to rest, the staff told. Visitors are restricted to walkways and not allowed to feed the Orangutan because OUI wants to educate visitors without interfering the rehabilitation process. Well done OUI Foundation!

It was an absolute pleasure to go and see these amazing creatures at Bukit Merah. There is a boat ride across to the island that takes about 20 minutes (it can be a bit hairy getting on and off the boat as it can be steep if the water level has gone down). When you get to the island it is humans that are caged in a tunnel while the Orang Utans have the freedom of the island. We had a very knowledgeable guide to tell us all about the animals and how the foundation is looking after them, and is was obvious that they are very much loved and well cared for there. We were able to get up pretty close to some of the Orang Utans and we could see how amazing and intelligent they are.

A lovely trip across the lake to see these wonderful animals. It was very quiet on the day we visited so had a guide with just 4 people. Saw a lot of the Orang Utans and almost felt that we were the exhibition rather than them. Lots of good info on the breeding programme and welfare.
