Το ιστορικό κέντρο στο Campeche είναι εντυπωσιακό. Τα σπίτια είναι μέσα στο χρώμα, η εκκλησία είναι πολύ επιβλητική και η πλατεία υπέροχη

The Historic Center of the city of San Francisco de Campeche remains very enjoyable and there are still surprises when taking a walk through the streets. For example, I came across the house where writer José de la Cabada, author of short stories and film scripts during the 5s and 60s, was born.
The Center is not bustling, except in the street where restaurants and bars prevail, which runs from the "Sea Gate" to the "Land Gate", and even there the bustle is very tolerable.
At night, the appearance of the streets and facades is lovely. Walking is obligatory and the finish can be a refreshing drink, a good coffee or, best, chocolate, whose preparations are varied and absolutely natural.
Whether during the day or at night, the Centre’s several shops offer high-quality local produce. These are mainly textiles, hats and wood carvings.
Work has begun on a train that, following an old route, will go from the beautiful seawall of the city to the San Francisco de Campeche station of the Mayan Train.

Much more beautiful (yet less visited) than Merida, Campeche has a crazy charm, and deserves much more than the latter

My husband and I stayed in Campeche for 2 weeks and loved it! I would not exactly recommend visiting when we did (mid-late April) because it was incredibly hot, but we are from central Texas, so we could just barely handle it! :)
Things we wish we would've been able to find out when doing research:
- Some people had a working knowledge of basic English and some restaurants had English menus, but overall we needed to speak quite a bit of Spanish. We planned to fall back on Google's newer conversational translation feature, but even with downloading Spanish and English for offline use, our cell reception often wasn't good enough or there was too much other background noise and the phone didn't pick up what was said. Sometimes we'd type out what we wanted to say in Google translate, then show the Spanish translation to the person. Not the most charming way to communicate, but worked fine as a last resort.
- The locals are indeed very kind and will do their best to communicate if you say "lo siento, mi español es malo" or "lo siento, no entiendo mucho español." Just something to let them know you're trying your best, but that your knowledge is limited. This helped us a lot because it set the tone that they should speak a bit slower and with fewer words. We did the same since that's all we could manage, and in the end communication was decent using this method! If you don't let them know that your Spanish isn't great, they will assume you understand and will just start talking. On one hand this is refreshing, but at the beginning when we were just getting used to things, it was a bit overwhelming.
- If you are from the USA, beyond not drinking the tap water please take it seriously to NOT brush your teeth with the tap water either! Also be aware that many drinks like lemonade are watered down with tap water, so you need to think about that with everything you order at a restaurant. If you're unsure, just go with something canned/bottled..... trust me.
- Many stores and restaurants close from around 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm (at least during the hot season) as it is the hottest part of the day. Great time to take a siesta at your hotel or Airbnb!
- We found the nightlife to be quite energetic from Thursday (basically their "early Friday") through Sunday. But then many shops would close on Monday and/or Tuesday to rest from the busy weekend.
- We tried to go on a boat tour around the coast of Campeche, but the weather was bad every time we tried due to wind.
- There are plenty of places to pull out cash at an ATM at a fairly good exchange rate! You will definitely need a good amount of cash while visiting Campeche.
- Tipping culture seems pretty similar to the USA with some restaurants including it in the total price, others offering the usual selections of 10%, 15%, 20%, etc.
- Steer clear of the elotes and esquites from the green "El Abuelo" carts. SO disgusting! And we're usually fans of elotes and esquites but theirs were absolutely awful.
- There was a VERY pungent smell blowing in from the water (like rotten eggs and dead fish) that made it very unpleasant to walk along the water most days. I think this is a rare occurrence with the water biome or something, but it was still disappointing.
- Many restaurant employees will stand outside and try to flag you down to come inside or sit outside. It's okay to just ignore them if you're not interested; at least that's what we observed the locals doing so we did the same.
- The souvenirs in Campeche are more unique than many of the other towns we visited in the Yucatan Peninsula, so if you're looking for unique items, don't wait for something better to come along! We especially liked Joyeria Juan Sanchez (Opalos Mexicanos) where they have one-of-a-kind pots and other items made with traditional mayan materials, techniques and artwork! The shop owner is very kind and even took a picture with us to put on the wall since we bought a pot which I believe his good friend makes by hand!
- The roads can be a bit difficult to drive on around the city because there are many speed bumps. Some of them are marked and others are not. So, just be very cautious if you drive a rental car.
- The city is very affordable overall.
- We felt very safe walking around the streets during both the day and nighttime.
- A good portion of the city is still fairly poor, so be respectful of that.
- Not every restaurant or store will have AC!
This is everything I could think of pertaining to Campeche itself. Hope this helps :).

Initially the city looks a bit lacklustre, but there is a lot of renovation work going on and with the aid of a good guide (I used Tucan Tours, big thumbs up) you can learn some of the long and varied history of the city. The pirates, Spanish, English and Mayan have all left their mark on the city.

In the colonial era, San Francisco de Campeche established itself as the main port of the peninsula and was equipped with walls to defend itself from pirate incursions. The oldest part, still largely surrounded by walls, is made up of pastel-coloured buildings, cobbled streets, fortified bastions and residences currently being renovated. Shot in the evening it has its own charm and it is no coincidence that it is one of the Mexican UNESCO sites.

The old town is in top shape, all the buildings are renovated or in the process of doing it. Lovely neighborhood.

Hi:
We'd like to know whether there are beaches or other opportunities for outdoor swimming near Campeche City, how far from the city these are, and whether some of them can be reached by public bus. Thanks much for whatever you can tell us--Larry Lack and Lee Ann Ward, New Brunswick, Canada
Skrevet 7. januar 2019
Dear Larry and Lee Ann,
Campeche is a coastal city, there are some beaches immediately adjacent to the downtown, but they are not ideal for beach-goers. There is a small fishing village a few kilometers away, it is called Lerma. Here you can find some beaches to relax on at Playa Bonita (“Pretty Beach”).
I hope this can help you!
Have a nice travel and enjoy the time in Mexico
