The background story of the German girl was already mentioned below, which is why I'm only writing about the object.
It is in the western part of P.U. and is fairly easy to reach by bike. You just have to know that there are no more paved paths just before it.
The small shrine is obviously still looked after today, because although many people leave a memento here, everything is quite neat and clean.
You don't learn much about the girl there, but there are one or two sources online.
Other than that, it is a bit remote, but that also adds a little to the mystique of this place.

I was invited by NPARKS to Ubin Day 2023 as Friends of Rail Corridor and felt honored to have played a positive influence in promoting the rail corridor and the greenery efforts. Enchanted by the rustic and idyllic charm of the little gem island, I immediately accepted the invitation.

It was a long ride via MRT and bus from my house at Queenstown to the Changi Ferry Terminal. While on board the public transport, I browsed through an article which touched on the German Girl Shrine located on the island. It appeared ghostly and eerie and shrouded with mystery. On my previous trip, I had visited the Tua Pek Gong temple, Datuk Gong shrine and a Siamese Temple but his was my first-time hearing of a German girl shrine on the island.

The thought of the shrine promptly vanished the moment I stepped on the jetty landing and greeted by the rustic beauty surrounding the coastline at the main village. The wooden stilted kampong houses under swaying coconut trees and the breezy, idyllic sandy beaches studded with weird-shaped rocks woke me up from my lethargic mood.

The hours that followed was a tightly scheduled event of touring the exhibition booths at the Assembly area manned by the several nature and wildlife conservation societies: one million tree planting hosted by Minister Desmond Lee, bird watching at Pekan Quarry and bento lunch. After the lunch, I was free to roam around the island till the last ferry ended for NPARKS event at 3 pm. Looking at my watch, I had about 2 and a half hours left.

I was given a map of Pulau Ubin. I had previously explored the eastern part of the island right to Chek Jewa. The Tudor style House no. 1 at the Visitor Centre and the relaxed stroll along the boardwalk during low tide marveled me on the beauty of the colorful sea critters found on the wetlands still etched in my memory.

Strangely, my eyes suddenly fall on the German Girl shrine on the map and there was an impulse in me to visit the shrine. The shrine is located at the south-western part of the island. I was not sure whether I could reach there and return timely for the last NPARK's chartered boat at 3 pm. But the thought of it propelled my legs to commence the hike.

From the assembly area near the main jetty, I strolled along Butterfly Hill, passed by the bird watching sanctuary at Pekan quarry, Jalan Jelutong, came across the Ah Ma drink stall at Jelutong Bridge and continued my journey along Jalan Endut Senin. At Merbah Hut, I did not scale up the 74 m Puaka Hill to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view over the Ubin Quarry. I would have done so on a normal day but that day, I felt an invisible force that drove me instinctively towards my intended destination.

I visited the orange-colored Na Du Gong shrine temple along Jalan Endut Senin. The gate to the Republic Polytechnic Experiential Learning Centre was locked and the colorful kayaking dinghies stacked in the Centre appeared to be abandoned for quite some time. The few houses at the Chinese Village seem to be unoccupied and quiet. A row of cactus plants fascinated me as visitors engraved their names on them. I would not have `vandalized' such beautiful plants to testify my passing by here.

The Ubin Living Lab and the Endut Senin camp site is modern and the environment tranquil and scenic. Mangrove trees are a natural effective barrier in protecting our shorelines against soil erosion and tsunami. The Mangrove Arboretum that stretched a relatively long distance along the coastline marveled me. There were two or three visitors were fishing at the Puaka Bridge.

From the Mangrove Arboretum, I ventured along the Ketam Mountain Bike Park and arrived at the Ketam Quarry Pond. It was breezy and was the last trekkable point. Beyond this, there was no through road. I back trek my path and noticed two young girls probably from Republic Polytechnic walking to a sidetrack. I followed them and saw the German Girl Shrine temple. The two girls sat outside the table and chairs outside the temple but was oblivious of my presence. I took some photographs and left.

The German Girl Shrine was about a 18-year-old German girl who lived with her family in Pulau Ubin during World War I. Singapore was a British colony then and when the Germany decided to detain British nationals, Britain in retaliation also started to round up all the Germans living in Great Britain and her colonies. When the girl and her family were rounded up, the girl managed to escape but unfortunately, fell off from the cliff during her flee. The quarry villagers helped in her burial and erected the temple and shrine to remember her.

When I returned to the main jetty, it was at 3 pm and I took the last NPARKS chartered bumboat ferry back to the mainland. I have this strange feeling. It was coincidental or affinity to chance upon an article on the German Girl Shrine. And was it coincidental or affinity that I decided to hike to the shrine and was it coincidental or affinity that I managed to visit the shrine with the `guidance' of two young girls and was it coincidental or affinity that I returned to the main jetty timely for my last bumboat back to mainland. This trip to the southwestern part of Pulau Ubin is shrouded with mystery and unexplained coincidence.

In my opinion, this is certainly a spot that deserves a visit. It is better to take a bike to visit this spot as it is not in the immediate vicinity of the Pulau Ubin jetty. The story goes that before WW1 broke out, a German family was living here and when the hostilities started, the British military rounded up the Germans at this plantation. The teenager daughter fled into the woods and a few days later, her body was discovered. Today there is a simple shrine dedicated to her, with some candles at the altar and some joss sticks. No entry fee is required. It is set in tranquil settings and one can spend some time here, pondering the past of this place and this island.

Ketam Mountain Bike Park入口から500メートルくらいのところにある小さな寺です。なんか外見は普通の家みたいです。Berlin Heiligtumと書かれた垂れ幕がかかってました。

I agree with Ms takumi Hirohito.

If u visit the Great wall of China without studying the wall's history or significance in the earlier years, the wall will be some granite stones.

The humble temple has rich history and contain the rich legacy of pilau ubin.

Religiously, the temple is also a part of our Asian believes. Tao religion.

Personally, I visit the temple from mainland singapore once every 2 to 3 months to pay respect to German lady.

Must visit if u are around pilau ubin.

People who said that this was nothing special don't know the historical significance behind this shrine, and how religion plays a major part in shaping the multicultural and multiracial society that is of Singapore.

It was good learning from a guide the history and geography of this particular place, and also the current situation of the island politically.

Before leaving a review, I guess it's better if people do a little more research and take their time to understand why it is here in the first place before saying it is nothing special.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We visited the shrine on a hike around the Island and stopped out of curiosity. It is another shrine like so many others, important I imagine to those for whom it is important but of little specific interest.

When you arrive on Pulau Ubin, the spotlessly clean toilets are straight ahead, then turn left and you'll find 3 or 4 little shops leasing bikes. If you go on the weekend, they'll run out of 'good' bikes & you'll have an old clunker. Still, check the brakes before you go. They don't provide locks or helmets, but you're on P Ubin; no one will steal your bike... and just don't fall off! The bike men will give you a small photocopied map of the island including German Girl Shrine, and off you go!
It's a leisurely 20 minute ride down the only paved road on the island. You'll see the ochre coloured shrine to your left down a small stony path.
In WWI a German family was farming on P Ubin. The British came to remove Germans because they might be enemy aliens. The daughter of the family, about 13 years old, ran from the British, fell into a mine and died.
Somehow this girl because a sort of Taoist patron saint, especially revered by gamblers and this shrine was built in her honour.
The windows of the shrine have very attractive ceramic bamboo styled bars, but the front door is left open. You can take off your shoes and socks and enter. You can make a donation and light a joss stick. Stick your joss stick in the large stone trough shaped container filled with sand just outside the front door. There's a substantial collection of offerings including children's toys (dolls, etc). The shrine's in a lovely jungly setting; ideal for a breather and a drink from your water bottle.
The shrine's fairly simple in construction, although there's a small red temple shaped building with votive offerings and a large sulphur yellow coloured pagoda shaped place for burning paper offernings. And it's a fascinating glimpse into an odd historical event.
Of course, other than a voluntary donation, there's no charge for visiting.
