A lovely historic park with Roman archaeological features. Lovely for a day of walking with a nearby church. A very rural location. Consider taking plenty of food and drink.

Once a bustling Roman town but now just part of the walls and some of the amphitheatre exist. Nice to walk around the grounds and take in the various info boards to imagine what life might have been like. Free car parking and also a very quaint church to explore.

It is what it is really a broken down wall and a damaged amphitheater. The walk is quite nice but I wouldn’t go expecting to see much other than a half broken down structure which people have damaged overtime. I think it’s worth going to if you’re in the area or local to it but I wouldn’t tell anyone to go out of their way to visit here

The information boards along the route from the car park need to be reviewed and tested using people who have no previous knowledge of the site. We arrived on one of the hottest days of the year and walking around was uncomfortably hot and humid, but the orientation of the maps and pictures did not help to get a clear view of what was where. You do need a lot of imagination with this site, especially as the best excavations have been reburied (for the future!!) and the walls are the only obviously Roman remains, with "earthworks" being even less obvious.
The local parish church building, just within the Roman wall, was infinitely more interesting.

This had been on "Wish list" for a while having seen reference to it on TV. Nice walk around the old town walls and visit to amphitheatre. Whilst there are useful info boards around the site, it was somewhat disappointing that there has not been more effort to "restore" parts to make it more visible. (cf Wroxeter for instance) Even tidying up perimeter pathways (nettles, brambles etc) to make overall site visibility better would have improved the experience.

It’s basically a lovely walk in the countryside, away from roads and on today’s visit replete with lovely birdsong. I heard my first cuckoo of Spring as well as the larks. However it’s all rather poorly signposted, not really signed adequately when driving from the village green in Silchester itself. Then on the walk it’s very easy to miss the amphitheatre while near the 12th century church, as the signs are almost non existent. Those with local knowledge would probably drive straight to the little church where you can pick up the circular walk halfway round. But again it’s not obvious from the church where to go. Better signage would really help. But all in all it’s a very pleasant excuse for a walk in lush countryside with a little evidence of ancient history thrown in

The history of this once important settlement is amazing. Unfortunately, there is very little remaining to see.
Still interesting to see where it used to be.

Although the remains of the Roman wall & amphitheatre are impressive, you will need to use your imagination for everything else.. There are plenty of signs describing what was once there scattered around the route. A interesting walk in the countryside.

We've previously enjoyed a family walk here, but this time was truly spoilt.
The amount of abandoned poop bags and dog mess everywhere was awful.
It's soo disappointing to have such a wonderful place to visit, but ruined by selfish dog owners.

A good place to walk with a fascinating history and free car park. Toilets (portaloo) available in car park. The path around the walls is a bit up and down but the walk from the car park to the City Walls and on to the Church is flat.

How much time should we spend here? Is it the sort of attraction we should spend a few hours or only a short time needed
Skrevet 19. oktober 2019
You can spend as long as you like here. A very short visit to read the display board in the car park, go to the loo and glance over the view of the site would take you ten minutes. A walk around the site would be one to two hours if you took your time on a pleasant day. We had a walk of about half an hour, ate our picnic, spending about an hour there. Hope you enjoy your visit, however long you have available.

How far is it from the centre of reading
Skrevet 26. oktober 2018
10 minutes by train and then about 45 minutes walk
Skrevet 28. oktober 2018
absolutely, wont be any cover if it rains but some lovely spots to picnic. Don't miss the beautiful Saxon Church or the Roman Amphitheater down the road a little

Yes, dogs are allowed, we often walk our dogs here. Sometimes there are cattle grazing and they have to be on the lead through the churchyard, but in general it's a nice place to walk dogs

Hi, can anyone tell me if it is wheelchair friendly plz, as would like to visit while we are in reading this coming weekend.
Skrevet 16. september 2015
I am almost certain you could walk as far as the amphitheatre on a fairly even path and so it would be wheelchair friendly.

Hi plan to meet friends who are travelling down to Cornwall and having a stopover. Want to spend around half a day In the area and have a relaxed lunch too somewhere. Could you give directions from Guildford please? Is there a charge?
Skrevet 15. august 2015
There are no tickets and the carpark is free, think of it more as a walk in the countryside, with Roman walls and the shell of an amphitheatre
