The fort is no doubt stunning but if Meherangadh in Jodhpur is say 10/10 then Chitradurga is 5/10. It has potential but needs better marketing and attention. Lots and lots of climbing to do. There are plenty of monkeys so it’s advisable to carry a long twig or stick. Avoid food and water bottles. You could become a target of monkeys. The guides are average. I knew Tamil, English and Hindi. Yet to get a guide who could communicate with us was not easy.

Nearby Hampi is outstanding as a tourist spot

Chitradurga Fort is massive and steeped in history. With plenty of spots to visit, you need to cherry-pick the ones you want to see to
optimise time. Onake Obavvanna Kindi & the various temples are the highlights.

We went there in the morning around 7. But the sun was so bright. It would be good to go there at 6 in the morning. The fort is open at that time. Or may be in the evening when sun is not that bright. You will a lot of parrots and squirrels there. The view from the top of the fort is really nice. You can have a birdeye view of the city. We went there with our son who is 35 months old(2yr 11month). He was able to walk most of the times. But at some places he was us to carry him. It’s difficult to carry a child and go up on the fort. Carry some snacking items as you won’t find anything there. Beware of the local guides. Even if you say No to them they will keep following you.

One of the biggest and well-maintained Fort of South Interior Karnataka. Detailed history can be found on Google.

From outside, one cannot make out the size of the fortress, it is huge and need minimum 3-4 hours to cover all the historic and valuable spots. Most of it is preserved except the Royal Quarters which is in ruins and quite inaccessible.

If one is completely unaware of the background and history attached to the fort, govt. approved guides are available. We did not hire a guide as we wanted to explore at our own pace.

Personally, early mornings are the best time (fort opens at 6.00 AM), because one, there are no crowd and second, looks beautiful in morning sunlight. Avoid afternoons, especially in summer.

Entry Ticket is 25/- and can be booked only by scanning QR Code.

Needs lots of climbing stairs so wear proper shoes and senior citizens may find it difficult to climb (there are seating benches at the base). There is also no food or water option available inside, so carry along with it.

Please DO NOT litter the fort.

The guides at the gate are super nice, knowledgable but English is limited. I went with my husband who speaks Kannada and he translated for me. Definitely recommend a guide because it’s easy to get lost, plus they can point out a lot of things that might be missed.
Ticketing was a huge pain: have to use a QR code. If you’re foreign with limited cellular service, it might be a challenge and there is NO CASH option. If you have people who are Indian citizens and foreign (like my husband and I), you will have to do separate transactions. Wear proper shoes (like running shoes). The stairs are uneven height (some quite a step up), some of the stones are worn smooth, others are fairly craggy. Go early or in the late afternoon or you will cook in the sun. There is very little shade. As a person who is melanin-challenged (even though I tan easily), this was a concern. We had an abbreviated visit - 2 hours - and barely scratched the surface. This place is HUGE and definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There were so many battles and “transfer of power” (read: conquerors) that took place, many examples of Indian engineering and brilliant creativity from so many centuries ago. Great stop if you’re visiting Hampi or worth a quick visit if you’re in Bengaluru or any other surrounding area in driving distance. @Government of Karnataka: This gem is a real opportunity for tourism, historical preservation and state pride!!!!

The entire fort complex is about 1300 acres and has 7 circles of fort walls enclosing it with over 36 watch towers and several secret passages too. The fort has been built with so much of thought to ensure enemy doesn't get easy entry - all the entrance are in zig zag fashions and the doors were so massive that elephants were used to open or one has to blast open the door with huge wooden blocks where hundreds of soliders will have run carrying the blocks to smash against the door to open. Hence the entire structure was built in such zig zag manner (like snake crawling zig zag fashion) that smashing the door is not possible at all because there is not enough space to run and smash the door!!

Even the steps to climb up and down have some depressions resembling horse shoe and when asked why they were there-- the guide explained those are for the horse to ensure they don't slip while going up or down the pathway -- what an fantastic thinking !!

The famour kannada movie "Nagarahaavu" was shot here. The fort became even more famous because of the Onke Obava .. brave lady who killed more than 40+ Hyder Ali's men when they tried to sneak into the fort through secret passage. Her husband (Sentry) was having food and when she went to fetch water for him from a pond nearby, she sees these guys sneaking into the fort. Since she didn't want to disturb her husband lunch, she took it on herself to defend, take the pounding stick or pestle (Onke in Kannada) and stands gaurd near the mouth of the small hole where the Hyder Ali's solidier were trying to sneak in. She used the Onake or pestle (a wooden long club meant for pounding paddy grains) to kill the soldiers one by one by hitting them on the head and then quietly moving the dead without raising the suspicions of the rest of the troops. Mudda Hanuma, Obavva's husband, returned from lunch, was shocked to see Obavva standing with a blood stained Onake and several of the enemies' dead bodies around her. Later, the same day, she was found dead either due to shock or having been killed by the enemy soldiers.

Booking is online except on Sat/Sun, when I heard they issue tickets. You just have to scan the QR code displayed near the entrance, enter required details including the id proof and then INR 20 is the ticket + tax. Show the generated ticket at the counter and enter. Plan for early morning or after 4pm. Fort is opened from 6am to 6pm. Parking is available.

There is a Mayura Durg KSTDC hotel just 100mts from the fort entrance for good breakfast/lunch etc. They have about 12-13 rooms in case you plan to book there.

We hired a state approved & certified guide by name Basavaraj. He explained in detail about the fort.
Fort itself is huge and would probably need a day or 2 to fully explore it. Overall, the fort was well maintained despite some tourists throwing plastic covers, food stuff, etc. Security was reasonably good.
Stones making the fort wall are tactfully cut using manual means and trimmed by the workmen back then. Fort walls are approximately 8~10 feet thick. Most of the fort remains was it was done originally. This fort called as the 'elu sutthina kote' (seven runged fort) in Kannada was built over 200 years by round 11 different kings. In certain places, walls are restored by the state govt. A message read that food & water inside the fort was so abundantly available that it could survive a blockade from outside for 12 years. There were connected ponds inside which made storage of rain water well, without flooding of the fort.
View of the city surrounding the fort was also beautiful. 'Obbavana kindi' for which this fort is well-known for the bravery of the lady of the guard who fought and killed 20~30 enemy soldiers of hyder ali single-handedly, was crowded but still intact. A must visit place. Try on a week day when crowd is less, for better tranquil atmosphere.

Must visit fort if you are a history lover. It is spread in huge areas so wear proper shoes.
Here a guide, there are so many stories that you get to hear. Everyone loved this one. While coming back from this place we had our breakfast at lakshmi tiffin centre as it was recommended to us by locals. The tiffin centre has awesome dosas.
