Stunning geography - awesome vistas everywhere you look. We visited the day before the classic boat show, so some awesome boats too!

From the advice of a local resident of Nelson we detoured our return journey to Picton via Nelson Lakes.
WOW
The view is staggering, the lake is an incredible turquoise blue colour and is flanked by large mountains and forests.
Nestled in the lake is a small wooden jetty which has many resident Mallard ducks who are happy to share this natural wonder.
At our time of visit we were the only visitors there, which made for a peaceful & serene setting. There are many great photo opportunities with the ever changing cloud formation and and mountains covered with a small dusting of snow.
Our stay was only an hour due to the blustery artic winds.
There are fabulous views of Lake Rotoiti in any direction.
Worth the stop - pictures do not do this national park justice.

Breath taking beauty. This place makes you feel very small when in the presence of something magnificent. A very spiritual experience.

No doubt this is a very stunningly beautiful lake. Amidst the backdrop of majestic mountains enveloped by foggy clouds, it's just crazily beautiful.
And the small unrailed wooden jetty jutting out towards the mountains adds to the serene atmosphere.
But what makes this lake very different from the other just as stunning lakes are the "natural add-ons."
This lake has many nice Mandarin Ducks, Black Swans, even Black Fishes ( looks like Catfishes) - all happily swimming near the shore. And even few seagulls roaming around the shore area.
However, we had an unexpected add-ons -SANDFLIES!
Shortly after we got out of car, we were attacked by swarms of sandflies. We did not expect it as so far all the lakes we have been to don't have sandflies or just occasional ones. We had anti insect patches but did not put it on earlier - too late.
Perhaps its the timing- we were here around dusk- which I believe is when sandflies are most active.
We had to cut short the time here & ran off quickly. The sandflies even got into the car. And all of us got quite a number of bites! What a spoilsport- terrible sandflies!!

We were recommended to come here as we were staying at Renwick and it is a very easy journey. We parked at the Visitors Centre, and got a map with the walks on. We just did the Peninsula walk as it was very hot, and this was a very cool, shaded walk- about 1 hour. We had been warned about the sandflies and sprayed ourselves all over, wore trousers, shirt and trainers, but in fact we weren't plagued by them at all. It was a beautiful, peaceful lake and a lovely walk. We then drove up Mt. Robert Rd and parked at the carpark near the top and walked along the lake view path. I would like to do more of that. We had also stopped for coffee at the Arnaud Lodge on our way, which was a nice location. Would definitely like to come back again and do some more walking.

One of the most beautiful place that i have ever seen. Its better if you can go there during summer and winter to see the difference of the mountains with and without snow.

If you do one thing at Nelson Lakes, walk along Robert Ridge to Angelus Hut. It's one of the most stunning walks I've ever done; ample views of lakes and tarns, and a nice steep, but rewarding climb.
We did a loop over Easter - first night Lakehead Hut, second night Angelus Hut, then third at Bushline Hut and were back in Nelson by midday. We were a group of four ranging from experience trampers, to one who'd never done more than an overnighter and all found it very easy.
Angelus Hut and Robert Ridge were the biggest highlight - we had perfect blue skies which made the lakes a stunning colour. Angelus Hut is siutated right by the lake and very well done up - the long drops smelled NICE. Well worth the side trip up Mt Angelus - plenty of carins to follow, but a bit slippery in places. Wouldn't recommend if you're afraid of heights or a clumsy person.

We nearly missed out staying here, not expecting it to be busy late April at all. School holidays though so should have known better. We ended up at West bay campsite, which was actually ideal for us, just a short walk to the water with our kayaks. The facilities are really good. Lovely dining area (bring your own cooker) but benches and table & chairs if you need to get out of the weather. Then the toilets are all modern and even a system for pulling up your own solar shower, otherwise take a cold one. The campsites are set in cubby holes by the bush. We had our very own 'camp host' a little robin visit us. The lake and scenery is so beautiful and special at the different times of day. It was picture perfect when we left the shore to paddle to the other end. Not so coming back with a good strong headwind to contend with. But it was calm again for our happy hour by the lake side in the evening. This is our second time back in the area and it won't be our last. If we weren't needing to move on we would have stayed longer and climbed Mt Robert, next time.

We were there near the end of February but the sandflies were horrible by Lake Rotoroa, by the campground. We parked for a little bit looking out but the with the way they were swarming, we didn't even want to get out. I would say this area is beautiful but doesn't seem terribly developed. We were surprised that there really wasn't anything here and that it almost seems an afterthought area.
So, we drove over to Lake Rotoiti. We bought some spray in the visitor's center but ended up not needing it as we walked along this lake. We parked at the visitor's center and took the path down to the water, though there is plenty of parking near Kerr Bay Campground. There are bathrooms down by the water as well. That is where the picture of the dock jutting out into the water is.
The path we took went around the west side of Kerr Bay. Near the bottom, before it started curving around into West Bay, we took a different path that actually dropped us off back at a nearby road and we walked that back to our car.
Overall, I really struggled with whether we should even stop in the park to begin with. NZ is full of so much beauty and despite research, I really couldn't find anything that stood out in the area. We were on our way to Havelock from Christchurch so it was a nice way to break up a long drive anyway but it was disappointing to say the least.
