An interesting experience in a working Abbey. It looks very new even though over a hundred years old.

It was great to walk round an empty Abbey with no other person around. First time visitor and such remote area.

Returned to Ampleforth after the disappointment of closure through lockdown. Alternative location in the Windmill is very safe and a lovely spot. Great menu despite not having the famous apple cake. I enjoyed the fresh ploughman's platter and all other meals were mouth watering

Thank you so much for your review. I'm so sorry the Apple Cake wasn't available when you visited. It is going to be a daily staple on our soon to be updated menu so should be available if you return. I'm so glad you all enjoyed your meals, it's always to lovely to hear good feedback.

Lovely, unusual place and a perfect stop over for our coast 2 coast bike ride. Very good food and access to our own private bar. Most of all, excellent customer service from sophie who was exceptional.

Whilst not being able to enter the Abbey, even just a walk around the surroundings are enough to inspire peace and a sense of well-being.

The monks of Ampleforth Abbey have put a great deal of effort is remodelling the access to the visitor centre, Abbey Shop and Tea room (in the best North Yorkshire tradition).

This place is inspiring and charged with its 200-year history in “the valley”.

The Ampleforth honey and cider are both from the monastery orchards containing no less than 40 varieties of apples.

The Ampleforth craft beer is also a delight.

Everybody is so welcoming. Will return!

Visited here for a couple of hours on a Monday afternoon. Extremely impressive from the outside as well as on the inside. Very helpful and chatty members of staff in both the Visitor Centre and the shop.
Definitely worth a visit, but not a huge amount of history or beauty on the inside of the Abbey itself.

Called here between Xmas and New Year and the grounds and the buildings are stunning in a fabulous location. Cafe and visitors centre were closed (understandable) however still glad we called and had a walk around the grounds as the backdrop of the college is beautiful. Everything is kept immaculate not a thing out of place or litter anywhere.
Will definately call again. Excellent experience cant wait to go back when fully open

Driving around Yorkshire on a christmas break came across this beautiful tranquil place. The abbey itself is stark but wonderful. A glimpse inside the tea rooms looked a lovely place too. The grounds are vast and I guess worth exploration if permitted. Just missed a service according to other visitors.

Whilst staying locally as part of a holiday we paid a family visit to this wonderful place . . .

We started at the visitors centre & where warmly greeted by Hugh, one of the volunteer guides. Hugh made us very welcome & with his calming manner explained the history of Ampleforth, The Abbey, the College & the immediate area which was very interesting indeed

Hugh invited us to the short 1pm prayer service at The Abbey, one of the several daily services the Abbeys Monks attend. As visitors & observers it was inspiring to witness such a service, with the Benedictine Monks chanting the order of service.

We also visited the Abbeys Cafe, like the Abbey the service& quality of the food was exceptional, we samples the home made cream scones & they where exceptional & very reasonably priced, the coffee was lovely too.

Parking & visiting is free, coffee shop & donations are optional, we will definitely be returning to see even more of this wonderful place 😃

We love to visit the Abbey a couple of times a year. Love it in the Autumn when the leaves are changing. A spectacle in itself. Lovely to walk around the grounds beyond the rugby pitches across from Gilling.
Just a memorable place to visit.
