I've been here last year. And I have to say that it's one of my favorite place ever. The view are really beautiful and the park is really big, I'm sure you can spend all day inside and still have some more things to explore! The park also have a small market area inside it, which sells food, souvenir and everyday items at quite cheap price. The only thing I hate about this place is the toilet, imagine you enter the toilet and you see a load of liquid p*o on the floor, RIGHT AFTER THE JANITOR JUST CAME OUT OF THE BATHROOM. That might be the worst public bathroom experience I have in my life. In conclusion, beautiful places, BUT DON'T USE THE TOILET.

Visited the Stone Forest in half a day. The whole area is huge. We took the tram to the main area and then again to the smaller stone area. I saw people walking and you can probably see a lot more if you can walk. Just these 2 areas took us half a day. The stones are nice. And I would recommend visiting with a guide who can point out to you the difference in the structures. Otherwise they would be just stones.

This unique scenery is really worth a look if you are in Kunming (about 1 h 30 to get there by car). It is quite crowded at the entrance but it is possible to enjoy the landscape in quieter places in you move deeper in the forest.

Its museum isn't well advertised but definitely worth a visit, I especially enjoyed the section with the precious stones and the ones dedicated to the dinosaurs.

We found this park to be quite scenic, though the northern sections of it are very busy with tourists even in the off season. No vehicles are allowed in the park except for the electric shuttle carts. If you visit try to enter immediately after opening (08:00 I think) to beat the tourist busses that will disgorge a great flood of people here. Do not view the museum first, it is huge and will prevent you from beating the crowds into the actual rocks - instead go through it later in the day when rains or heat would make the park less pleasant (it is worth the visit!). You can easily spend 1.5 hours in there.

The south side of the park should be visited also. Get a ticket for the electric shuttle (south) and marvel at the more expansive views in that area. Hop off at some of the stops and explore a few of the trails there. The rocks are not as dramatic as the northern section, but very much worth exploring! (and you'll have no crowds!!!)

We talked to a very helpful ticket agent in the main office and found her advice very useful - with the exception of going to see the museum first.

All in all we really enjoyed our visit to this park are do recommend it, although no so strongly that you should make a trip here only for this park. Find something else nearby to see and you'll have a really good trip!

Not that difficult to get there; it just takes a bit of time. We took a taxi to the "Long Distance EAST Bus Station". Then purchased tickets to Shilin Scenic Area. Make sure you have your PASSPORT with you to purchase your tickets! In China, you need your passport wherever you go. Then make sure you get onto the correct bus to the "scenic area"; don't be confused with the bus that goes to Shilin County.
The buses won't leave until it is full or an hour has reached since the previous departure. We waited for about 45 minutes. Then the bus ride took 1.5 hours to get there. Once there, a native, in her native costume, came onto the bus to inform us about the area and how to tour the forest (in Chinese language only). She also encouraged us to visit a nearby cave, which we didn't go. Then we transferred to another bus to the scenic area. Once there, we purchased our admission tickets + our electric-car tickets from the entrance to the park. Highly recommended! Otherwise, the walk is 3 km. Save your energy for the park.
The park is huge; you probably won't get to see everything. We spent about 3 hours inside the park. There were snacks, cup noodles, and water for sale inside the park. If you prefer a better meal, eat outside the park or pack your own.
An easier way is to hire a taxi for the whole day, which costs 600 CNY. We chose the cheaper way and it costed us 40 CNY for the taxi and about 200CNY roundtrip for us.

Shili Stone forest is big, we went to Naigu shili. These are limestone formations from millions of years, used to be at the bottom of the seabed, so you might see fossils of shells embedded along layers of limestone formations. Naigu shili is less crowded, interesting formations, occasionally can see birds among the rocks n plants. During spring seasons, our guide told us there will be more beautiful flowers blooming in the field. The walk among the formations was easy n pleasant.

I went to China only for two nights stay and visited UNESCO site of stone forest in Shiling,Kunming. The facilities and arrangements for tourists are praiseworthy. As a foreigner we took an english spoken guide that helped us a lot. Weather was awesome. The place is fine and eligible for taking kids or elderly people provided you may carry strollers or wheelchairs on your own.

Shilin Karst stone is the nearest UNESCO site near Kunming If you chasing UNESCO site and love stone craving and architecture else it is a dull and not very interesting. I visited on a raining day and the attraction is an open space and not many covered rest place during the rain. Definitely we need to buy umbrella or raincoat and the whole stone karst is dull during the rainy season.

Here is my review on Shilin Karst Stone: -

Attraction Highlight: There are 2 section at this attraction. You will reach an intersection between major and minor stone area. Start off with the major stone scenic area on the right. There are few stone attraction around this major stone scenic area and remember to walk up the Wangfeng Pavilion to have a top peak beautiful scenery of the major stone scenic area. Then follow by a short ride of bumpy car to circulate the major site and drop off near Lianhua lake where we will complete the remaining Minor stone section at the left of the site. The main attraction at minor stone section is Ashima stone.

Attraction Tip: Shilin is easily reach from Kunming. Bus to Shilin is taken at Eastern Coach Station which can easily reach through subway line 3. The bus journey took approximately 1.5 hours from Eastern bus station to Shilin Karst stone entrance (Direct tour bus).

It's interesting and fun. It's a short D-train ride from Kunming (see below), and a local bus takes about an hour to get to the park. My U.S. passport card (a regular passport would also work) got free entry and the electric-cart ride up to the park proper. The return bus schedule wasn't clear (same bus), so allow plenty of time to get back to the train station.

There's sort of a sameness to the area. I was disappointed that the tour cart didn't stop as it ran the loop. Still, it's nice if you're in Kunming and want to do something different.

There are several options for the train from Kunming. All the "high-speed" (D-category) trains use the Shilin West station. From the Kunming South station, the ride is only about 20 minutes, but getting to Kunming South can take a long time (over an hour on the metro). D-trains to/from Kunming Main take an hour (the station is a horror to be avoided if possible).

"Regular" (K-category) trains take 1 ½ hours and use the Shilin (Yunnan) station. They also depart from the horror-show at Kunming main. I don't know what transport is available from/to Shilin (Yunnan), but's much closer so a taxi might be viable.
