Well worth a visit. We’d been planning to go for years as professional musicians born and bred in the area who enjoy Elgar. But often been too busy or it’s closed. Exhibition and cottage, along with the necessary tea room stop will take you 2 hours but will give you an amazing insight into Elgar’s soul.

Had not expected a lot at this small venue but on arrival a talk by Richard would be starting shortly.
Had a quick look at some of the museum exhibits then went to a fascinating talk by Richard. Did not know much about Elgar but certainly learnt plenty from a passionate lecturer.
Afterwards visited the cottage and gardens to discover a lot more about Elgar.
Did notice an error on the info board above his violin that indicated some actions in the 30/40's when he was ill or had died.
Overall a fascinating place and spent much longer than expected.

We had a great experience here. The highlight for us was Stephen the volunteer as he was so passionate and knowledgable about Elgar. He answered all your questions. He is an asset to the property

We had a wonderful few hours at The Firs today - the knowledge of the guides about Elgar really brought the visit to life for us. We felt so welcome and we left with so much knowledge about Elgar and his family - I haven’t ever visited a National Trust property where the guides had so much knowledge and their passion about Elgar has really inspired me to continue to find out more information about him when I get some time. The visit was made special also when a young pianist who was also visiting played the piano which Elgar had played and his daughter had donated to the Elgar collection for us to enjoy Elgar music. If you haven’t been to visit the house and garden and museum devoted to Elgar’s life which is full of information and interesting facts about his life I highly recommend you make time to go there.

We attended a talk given by Richard who was an entertaining and informative speaker. He illustrated his talk with selections from Elgar’s music that we hadn’t heard before, which made it more interesting. The house, visitor centre and garden combine to give you an interesting couple of hours.

The Firs Is in a pretty location but I left feeling I had not learned much about Elgar’s music and our teenager was bored. Having said that, it is fine if you are a National Trust’ member (so no more to pay) and are in the area, for instance, to visit Brockhampton National Trust site, Bromyard’s Time Travel Museum, or Ralph Court Gardens. The visitor centre and cottage are both well maintained.

The Firs is easy to find, off the A44 from Bromyard and just west of Worcester. Apparently you can reach it via the infrequent 420 bus from Hereford to Worcester. The car park was not busy. The first thing you see is a modern, small visitor centre and you have to go through this to reach the cottage.

There was only one member of staff in the visitor centre and one in the cottage, which was not enough. The cafe was only selling crisps and cold drinks. The cafe and front till only took cards, not cash (June 2022). The visitor centre had a film screening room to tell you about Elgar, but this was not running. The only CDs for sale of Elgar’s music were a handful of second hand ones.

Both in the visitor centre and cottage have plenty of information boards to read, which I love, but it all seemed rather disjointed. Crucially, information about Elgar’s music was all visual (writing and scores) with only some very quiet background music.

The Firs should have some kind of audio presentation, particularly for those of us who do not know much about classical music. Off the top of my head, how about having buttons in each room that play excerpts from different works, with something to identify the piece and tell you what is interesting or important about it?

I might go again if I am passing ( though it only seems open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) but currently it seems rather incomplete.

Really enjoyed Richard's talk at the start of our visit. The background that he gave and the music selections were excellent. He really sparked our interest. The cottage and its garden were a delight and the guide there was another mine of information. All round an excellent visit.

This is a lovely museum and small visitor centre alongside the old cottage where Elgar was born. It's run by NT and staffed by their enthusiastic volunteers who will talk to you about everything!!! There's lots of information on wall notices and lots of nice heirlooms etc. The cottage gardens are lovely and there's an orchard with seating near the car park.
