Chi non ha il coraggio di salire fino in cima al Mount Maunganui, può scegliere una base più semplice di camminata, appunto la Base Track, che però non darà tutte le soddisfazioni che una fatica maggiore ti concederà. Ma per persone meno ginniche o con qualche problema, va benissimo.

It was pre covid the last time we walked around the Mount but it never alters the lovely view from Pilots Bay to Maunganui main beach. A healthy way to reach your 10,000 steps! It is nice to see so many active people - young and not so young.

The track is well maintained and there are great views. There's a mix of sun and shade which is good on a hot day! Once you've done the walk, it's an easy stroll to local cafes

You must walk this on your cruise ship stop. It's an easy walk from the pier to the base of the mountain, no matter if you are on the lagoon (ship side) or on the beautiful ocean beach side. The views are stunning from every angle. You can't get lost because it is a circle. This is perfect for your less than brilliant companions if you have any. The trail is super well maintained with plenty of viewing benches along the way and some stairs down to the water in several spots. There are plenty of areas to take a rest and enjoy the stunning views. Bring a bottle of water to relax and take it all in. Much of the trail is shaded by the tree canopy without limiting the view. I think it is way prettier than climbing to the top. If your not from New Zealand this is a must do. And make sure you pick up after yourself...your mother would not approve if you didn't!

Great views from this easy walking fairly level track. Takes about 45mins of leisurely walking. Good for all ages. Recommended

Decent walk but easy enough. Gets a bit breezy but so lovely. Well worth the effort. Beautiful walk.

I wasn't sure if i could do the track because of an injured leg.

Base Track ist gut für Familien mit Kinderwägen oder Leute mit geringer Fitness oder wenn man einfach nur einen leichteren Spaziergang haben möchte. Relativ eben mit schöner Aussicht.

The base track is an easy walk, flat with moderate grades. Really good sea and harbour views and watch carefully you might see Oscar the resident seal. Try starting your walk off the base track from the different ends, very different views. There are other tracks leading off the base track offering bigger challenges and some absolute stunning views.

Walking round the mount is both relaxing and heart pumping. You can walk, run, stroll & it only takes about 40-45mins to do the whole track if your taking it slow. I see seals every now and then and love that u can stop and sit for a bit if you wish.

Is this walk on concrete or paved ? My elderly Mum (80) needs to be able to walk on it.

A small bit of it is concrete but mostly just a wide track and has rises so can be a little bit steep in places so would depend on how fit and stable your mum is. This walk takes about 30-45 minutes to do at a gentle walk

My wife and I enjoy walking. We will be visiting Tauranga via cruise in November for two days. We are currently exploring ideas on how to spend our time ashore. The Mount Maunganui Base Track seems a good walk. How would we access thus walk from the ship please?

Oh wow only just seen your question. If you haven't already been. I can tell you that you can't miss it. You dock at pilot bay and at the other end of the bay (about 1km) you will find the start. At the end of the walk are numerous cafe's to enjoy a reward

We will be visiting Tauranga by cruise ship and are interested in walking this track. How close is the track from the cruise ship terminal? Is it walkable? If not, what is the best way to get there? Thanks in advance for your help!

As a local, I walk the base track on a regular basis and Mauao (pronounced Mow-oh) has significant cultural importance to local iwi (tribes). On your walk you will see pipi shells embedded in the bank - remnants of a bygone era when Mauao was inhabited by local Maori.
When you get off the cruise ship at Pilot Bay it's a 10 min walk on flat terrain to the other end where you can start the base walk. Wear comfortable shoes, take a bottle of water and wind breaker as the sea breeze can be on the cool side in exposed areas.
