This museum is wonderful. The art was FAR superior to the Zeitz. The curatorial team is top-notch. If you want to see the best African art this is the place to do it. The setting is beautiful as well.

Correctly described as a centre for art and cultural expression. From a purely art perspective more my wife's thing than mine but I have to say the gardens, with their various sculptures dotted about, were impressive.
In one of the galleries (at the time of our visit) there was a charcoaled drawing by William Kentridge, a famous South African artist. He was recently featured on Alan Yentob's Imagine programme [BBC 2, 7 Nov 2022]. Also, more recently, the Royal Academy in London staged an exhibition of his work. His animated drawings are as unusual as they are fascinating given they reflect South Africa's troubled times and its rocky journey from apartheid to multi-racial democracy.
You don't have to be an art aficionado to appreciate what is on offer here but it is an important learning facility and the gardens alone capture the imagination.
Well worth a visit.

While in Cape Town, I took an Uber out to the Norval Foundation museum. I’m so glad I did, as it is in a beautiful building, well curated art exhibitions and includes a sculpture garden. I particularly enjoyed the exhibition Black South African Women Artists, 1940 – 2000. It is easy to get an Uber there and back as it is near the Consulate General of the United States.

I thought the exhibition of South African Black Women's Art, called "When Rain Clouds Gather" was great, such a variety of brilliant pieces. Seeing the years since 1940 through a black woman's eyes was fascinating and moving. I would highly recommend. Don't believe any people who tell you "it's not for us" as a white South African woman did, making wrong assumptions about us, it is absolutely for everyone and well worth seeking out.
The Irma Stern exhibition had some really good portraits. A particular highlight was the Sculpture Garden, which is a beautiful space, so well planted and maintained, with great sculpture around.
There's also a restaurant/cafe and bar area, and the almond cake was excellent!

I really expected more compared to other sculpture gardens. I think this place is overpriced for the overall experience. Only a few sculptures in the garden which are randomly placed "somewhere", one get the feeling that there was no plan in place and the sculptures were just dropped anywhere with no information on the art pieces. I spent 30 mins max both inside the museum and outside in the garden. The securities were friendly. Don't forget to pay your parking at the restaurant or at reception.

Stunning setting close to the mountain. I enjoyed the fynbos which was flowering at the time and the birdlife. We had lunch at Skotnes. I can recommend the White fish starter, Bobotie and Chocolate Fondant. The restaurant is airy and the views exquisite - a great choice on a day when it could rain.
We had a lovely time and will be back.
Entry to the garden is R120 and R20 will be added to your bill for parking. The restaurant is reasonably priced.

We visited as a group of three adults on Sunday 24 January. The main exhibition was works by Jackson Hlungwani a Tsonga-Shangaan artist.
We loved the architecture, exhibitions, sculpture garden, restaurant and surroundings. One visit is not enough and we will visit again when next in Cape Town. The price of R120 per adult is also quite reasonable.

I love the Norval Foundation visitor experience but I loathe how the parking and shop operate. We bought membership for several thousand rand and then couldnt get out of the parking as we hadnt paid the parking ticket. There is not adequate signage reminding one to do so and I have got stuck at the gate a few times as I hadnt paid. The parking should be sold with the ticket. The shop has beautiful stuff but is very uptight. I received a bday present from there and am still trying to change the colour of a very expensive and lovely necklace. I have been sent home. These experiences spoil the outing to Norval.
