My family and I decided to do an audio tour of lake Tahoe. This was one of the stops and we enjoyed it the most. You will be able to walk under some beautiful impressive trees. There are trails that take you to several historical homes and gardens. Beautiful views of the lake too. Highly recommend!

This historic site is well worth the time to explore. The story of the inhabitants is nicely displayed throughout the area and the grounds are well maintained with paths that run throughout the property and along the lake. The museum/house was closed the day we were there but it was still a highlight on our trip to South Tahoe.

Wanted to go to Emerald Bay, but could not find a parking place along route 89 the day after Independence Day at 10 am. Decided to check out this place, and really really glad we did. It has preserved estates from three bygone families, but even more interesting for us was to engage conversations with onsite craftsmen and women: a summer-in-resident artist, a couple of ironsmith, and a made belief ship captain. They were also handling out pickers and bags to families, especially ones with children, to pick up garbage. What a GREAT idea! They also had a small garden with a waterfall that served as a bathing pool for Stella's Jay's, a herb garden, and a tiny beach for swimmers and kayakers.

Fun tour and roaming around the Pope and Baldwin estates and land on the shoe of the lake. Self guided and self directed tour for us wandering around the many buildings and land that once belonged to these two wealthy families. Its a fun diversion during the day to get away from the crowded streets and even crowded trails to visit a peaceful plot on the lake.

This is a beautiful place along Lake Tahoe. This is a must take to explore the grounds. See how the rich from back in the day took in Lake Tahoe. The scenery is stunning.

The grounds right next to the lake are delightful to wander around. The buildings were all closed (mid week, end of August) but there are information placards to fill you in on the history. It is fascinating to see how the wealthy lived at the lake 100 years ago. Anyone want to write a Lake Tahoe Downton Abbey? The garden club keeps the flowers looking beautiful.

It is a very pleasant and relaxed environment in the midst of a very bustling area. We did not take any of the tours, but wandered around looking into the restored buildings and enjoying some of the shaded benches by the water. A small bear wandered across the lawn while we were sitting at the location shown in the picture.

I visited Tallac Historic Site on a weekday in July and enjoyed the leisurely walk on the historic estate grounds. It was not crowded unlike other places in South Lake Tahoe. I could only walk outside and admire the historical homes and buildings since the buildings were not open during my visit. I understand there are guided tours (ticketed) on certain days of the week. There are several trails on the site including the one by the lakeshore. Numerous interpretive boards provide elaborate historical information about the complex. The grounds are meticulously maintained. The site also includes the beautiful Taylor Creek Visitor Center, which is like a nature preserve. The nature trail here is awesome.
In sum, the Tallac Historic Site is a very enjoyable place. Parking is free.

We did a large group tour of the Tallac Historic Site and I had a fabulous time. The grounds are lovely just on their own, but then the houses and tour guides really make it shine. I appreciated how knowledgeable they were, and the fact that the docents were in period appropriate costume was cool too. It was educational and beautiful, and if history is your jam, you will enjoy it here.

Yes dogs are allowed on a leash and they ask that you bring bags for clean up.

I would like to know if this is accessible to handicap people

There are dirt paths that I believe can be accessed with wheelchair but the historical buildings may not have ramps.
Beautiful area to just go through and be in beautiful South Lake Tahoe

Most of it is. Parking is nearby and paths are paved and level.

There is a trolley in the summer, which will take you south to the South Y transit center or north to Tahoe City transit center. From the South Y transit center you can catch the BlueGo bus. The trolley runs about once an hour. June 24-July 10th it runs daily, July 14-Sept 4th it runs Fri-Monday, and Sept 9-Oct 1st it runs weekends only. It's called the Emerald Bay Shuttle, route 30.

Unfortunately, the Tallac Historic Site is now closed for the winter. The grounds, however are open year-round and it is a lovely place for a walk. We hope you'll visit us next year between Memorial Day and mid September when the buildings are open and we offer tours and programs.
