Located on the outskirts of Mostar, definitely come see it if you have the chance, it's a very historic and cute village. In particular, the taste of the figs we bought here is still on my palate.

Although the Pocitej castle is a little high, it is easy to climb.

On the way from the Sufi monastery of Blagaj Tekija to the Kravica waterfalls, we took a break in the small town of Počitelj. The town has a 14th century fortress that is worth seeing and can be visited for free. There are free parking spaces in the actual town at the foot of the hill, and from there you can start the approximately 1km long walk to the various parts of the fortress. There are several viewing platforms along the way, from which you can enjoy a great view of the surrounding area.

The stepped medieval fortress village of Počitelj is one of the most picture-perfect architectural ensembles in the country. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere.

The hillside mountain village has a rustic charm and a mosque that you can visit. There are efforts to preserve and renovate the village, but the signs of decay are already very clear and I can understand that no one wants to live in such a small village these days. It is a warren of stairways climbing between ramshackle stone-roofed houses and pomegranate bushes.

The village was badly damaged by Bosnian Croat forces in 1993, including the beautiful Hajji Alijia Mosque, which was deliberately targeted. This 1563 structure has now been restored, although photos displayed within show how much of the decorative paintwork has been lost. During the 1992-96 war in BiH the entire historic urban site of Počitelj and all its various buildings suffered extensive war damage.

Nearby is a 16m Ottoman clock tower, while further up the hill is a partly ruined fortress, capped by the octagonal Gavrakapetan Tower. You can climb up the tower or save your energy for even better panoramas from the uppermost rampart bastions.

Počitelj lies only 30 kms from more known and visited Bosnia tourist attraction Mostar. If you are already travelling along the M-17 towards Mostar, it would be a shame to skip it. Počitelj stands tall opposite the Neretva River and has splendid views over it.

In January 2003, the historic part of town of Počitelj was proclaimed a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2007, Počitelj submitted an application for the UNESCO world heritage list.

On our drive from Dubrovnik to Mostar, we stopped at Pocitelj, which has suffered extensive damage during the 1992-96 war. Besides the ŠIŠMAN IBRAHIM-PAŠA Mosque (also known as Hadži Alija mosque), another highlight in this village is its fortress, said to have been built by King Stjepan Tvrtko in 1383. It played a strategic role in controlling the passage to the sea through the Neretva Valley, and was a main stronghold against the Turkish conquest.

It was quite a steep climb to reach the tower, but not too difficult.
The view from atop the tower was stunning and breathtaking! Totally worth the climb.

Toured the town built on a hillside with fortified ramparts and so on, with NowBosnia tours. We had spent the day also at the Roman ruins in Caplinja, (and a pleasant, non-historical stop at the Kravica —waterfalls). Here you can see the size of houses, the makeup of the watchtowers and perhaps have the most scenic view of the Neretva River valley.

The historic medieval fortified village of Počitelj, is located on the left bank of the Neretva River, on the main Mostar to Metković road, just south of Mostar

Whilst UNESCO heritage listed it doesn't appear to be heavily visited by tourists (a good thing), mainly because it is really only accessible by private cars.

Počitelj and its fortifications were built in the 14th century and as its strategic importance grew, the town evolved reaching its peak in the early 18th century. The main features are the 15th century fortifications at the top of the hill (which is accessible by car or foot), the Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque and minaret, the hammam (17th century turkish baths), the Sahat Kula clock tower and the Ham of Šisman Ibrahim-Pasa (inn & stables - which is now a restaurant).

It is well worth climbing up to the fort at the top of the hill, as the views over the town, the river and surrounding valley are amazing. On the walk down, just past the mosque, are a couple of women selling freshly squeezed chilled pomegranate juice, which is so refreshing particularly on a hot day. There are a couple of cafe/restaurants in the village where it is worth trying the fresh burek and a cup of local coffee.

Pocitelj may be difficult to reach without a car, but we were fairly nearby while driving from Mostar to Kotor, and took the chance to stop in. We only had about an hour to spare, but were able to hike up through the village to some of the ruined towers/fortresses atop the hill. The village itself was very pretty and seemed mostly untouched by modern construction. The views from the top were amazing. The green Neretva River flowing past the green hills and mostly stone town were wonderful to see and photograph.

We were happy that we used this spot as a stop on our road trip - a great chance to stretch our legs and see some amazing sights.

Although much was damaged during the war, Počitelj is still without a doubt one of the best preserved little crannies of old Bosnian life you can find.

You can easily spend multiple hours crawling through this little fort and village, and you can learn a lot about the region just from its character.

Will say though it is a little bit of a funny juxtaposition when you look out from some of the top ramparts and see the giant modern highway bridge under construction just one town over.

Unfortunately, time did not allow us adequate opportunity to properly explore this beautiful walled historic village. Pocitelj was damaged over the years by war but aparently much of the town has been preserved in its original form dating back to perhaps the late 1300's. Of particular interest was the construction material of the structures. The basic building material was stone, bu most impressive was that they used irregularly shaped stone slabs to construct the roofs.

The village of Pocitelj is absolutely gorgeous, stunning, and quaint. It was honestly one of my favorite places that I visited in the Herzegovina region. I walked up to the top (this was steep and had to stop in order to catch my breath, but it was completely worth it) where I could see the entire village, which included the mosque, bazaar, clock tower, etc. I was probably there for at least 1 hour, but it was one of those places I'll never forget!
