Nunnington Hall stands on the banks of the River Rye. A dwelling has been recorded from 1249 but the existing house has grown out of a Tudor Hall. Over 450 years it has been altered to suit its owners and tenants. We visited on a gold but bright and sunny afternoon in late February. The house is fascinating and the garden simple but lovely all the same.

I visited Nunnington Hall again yesterday with my family including young children. It was very interesting, particularly the collection of dolls houses.Do talk to the volunteers, they know lots of fascinating information about the previous owners.

We visited when the house was dressed for 'Christmas through the Ages' . This was really well done with a lot of effort and artistic display. We especially enjoyed the 80's room as it was nostalgic for us! The Victorian room was complete with a real log fire and two staff dressed as 'servants' giving out sherry or cranbury juice, a nice touch. All the Christmas trees were dressed to suit the relevant time periods, an example of the popular style of clothing in each room as well. It was really interesting and enjoyable with information boards about the traditions for that era too. The Tudor feast was a sight to behold and the staircase was particularly festive with garlands, ribbons and candles. All the staff were smiley and helpful and whilst the garden was in Winter mood the staff suggested that the end of April was a good time for a revisit as the blossom would be out. It was the best 'dressed for Christmas' house that we have seen due to every surface being festooned with greenery/ribbons and candles, there was a lovely atmosphere. Well done to all the volunteers .Definitely one to put on the calendar for next Christmas. Good farming exhibition upstairs and the famous miniatures collection.

We visited on a pretty wet day in December. We wandered around the gardens and although it’s in its winter cloak, the structure of the yew provided interest. It’s obvious that the garden is maintained with love to a high standard. Good interactive displays and explanation of composting and the veg garden. The house didn’t disappoint, really appreciate the effort that went into making it Christmassy. Very interesting seeing Christmas through the decades. A great choir and a small Sherry- superb. The tea room staff get a special mention, they were extremely busy but unfailingly helpful and cheerful. Lovely gluten free cakes.
Will definitely return. Thank you

What a little gem this place is. It is quite tucked away but well worth the visit. Teeming with history and well related by the volunteers and guides. A snapshot into a world long gone by. There are not many places that still display hunting trophies and such like but these were 'of the time' and should be viewed as such. Some may be uncomfortable with these but, as stated, these are relevant to the period and to the occupants of the house at that time.
The collection of dolls houses and miniatures is spectacular and worth the visit on their own. The workmanship and attention to detail is phenomenal.
The garden is well worth a walk around too.
There is an excellent café on site with excellent fare at reasonable prices.
All in all, an excellent place to visit.

We visited Nunnington Hall which is a National Trust property that we had never heard of before and it is worth a visit if you like old properties.

We took advantage of a free family ticket offer in October 2023 half term (Mirror Group newspapers I think it was) to visit this National Trust site while on holiday in the area.
This was actually our second visit as we previously visited around 10 years ago but only the gardens. This time we were able to tour the house as well. For a house of this stature and nature its history is actually somewhat surprising and i would recommend reading it as told by the displays inside the rooms. Even on a damp Autumn day the gardens were a delight and we were pleased to see that the peacocks were still about - they were the main thing we remembered from our previous trip.

Beautiful place with the friendliest of staff. Roger & Pauline stood out. Interesting and varied history with links to Henry Vlll & his wife Catherine Parr through to the housing if WWll evacuees from Leeds. Welcoming tea room with delicious fayre. We would highly recommend a visit.

Nunnington must be one of the NT's hidden gems. I was unaware of its existence until staying in nearby Pickering and this property (although small) is a must as it has so much history attached to it.
It can be difficult to find as the signage is a little fragmented but the welcoming and friendly staff and volunteers help to make it a warming building.

A well looked after historic building. This may not suit everyone as the stone entrance hall has 4 skins for lions, tigers, leopard and cheetah displayed on the walls as well as many deer heads and guns. Very sad to see but a previous owner lived in India. Not much to see on the ground floor but a warren of rooms and staircases as you go up. A selection of tapestries restored at a huge cost and exhibitions including rural and farming life. Lots of information but what I particularly remember is 2022 a swaledale sheep fleece is worth 8p a kilo!! Lovely gardens and cafe but no shop.
