I've driven past the basin so many time and finally managed to actually walk around it. There are many ways onto the basin walkway and most are well signposted. The only ones which are harder to find are the ones on Lucerne Road. It is also connected to the Meadowbank and Orakei train stations so quite easy to reach it from there.
The walk itself was fairly easy. I really enjoyed walking on the bridge along the water parallel to the train tracks. There was also another bridge which is close to a tree with birds on them. The area has on-leash and off-leash areas along the track so there were quite a few people walking their dogs there. There were quite a few benches around the track so lots of places to just sit and absorb the views.
It looks like it is mainly used for watersports like water skiing. There is a mixture of trails from tracks to gravel paths which made it interesting to walk. There were a few points which required walking on the road. There is also a small uphill area between Upland road and Orakei Road which has building remnants on it as well as a really beautiful view of the basin.
It is quite a nice short walk and you go past the Orakei Bay Village which has lots of food and drink options.

We finally got around to doing the walk around Orakei Basin on our latest trip to Auckland, last week.
We took the train to Meadowbank Station and walked from there to the end of Purewa Rd, where the boardwalk starts. We walked around the basin in an anti clockwise direction. At the end of the boardwalk you walk up a little bit of hill before walking back down and past a car parking area, around the basin.
Further around there are some steep steps up to Lucerne Rd, where you cross the road to rejoin the path around the basin.
Down some more steps to cross the bridge over the stream, then continue round to finish up back where we started.
Instead of going back to Meadowbank Station we continued back along the boardwalk again, then instead of turning left to follow the basin edge we went straight ahead to finish up at the Orakei Station so we could catch a train back into Britomart.
It took us about 50 minutes to do this circuit, plus the repeat of the boardwalk.
We enjoyed this walk and it is easy to get to on public transport. But the birdlife was a little disappointing. Panmure Basin remains our favourite walk in central Auckland, but Orakei Basin is pretty good and we will do it again on any future visit to Auckland.
There are no public toilets on the Orakei Basin walk.

Me and my cousin went the other day on the 3rd. It was a beautiful day. Actually transport sucked because if rails closed and transfer were buses from otahuhu. But it was worth going to the basin again after 2 years for me! Due to covid it gets hard to exercise with fresh air. But this place hasn't changed and is my favorite basin to go to. Check out if ever you need to go or haven't been!

I grew up on a property that runs down to within a chain of the Basin's edge... and intend moving back to the family home early next year. For others, not so fortunate, it's a great place for walking on the Upland Road side, especially with dogs in tow... it was a jungle down there and my playground many years' ago.

This is a fantastic 4k walk, with mixed terrain, around the basin. I used to run the foreshore before the full loop was developed, and it's fabulous - particularly at high tide. We entered at Upland Rd and walked counter clockwise. We heard kōtare or king fisher singing, and spotted black and white shags nesting. The section along the rail line over the water is about five metres wide!! Note some sections on the Upland Rd side have stairs, and a lot of them!! I asked my brother if his legs were burning (he was fine, mine were). A lovely walk. Suggest best at mid or high tide. Go Orakei!

I like a nice flat walk, specially near water and this one fits the bill beautifully. Good for dogwalking or just random strolling, it does tend to get very busy on weekends. You're alright if you go early.

A really nice walk but was very busy on the day that I visited. Not as much bird life compared to other coastal parks mainly due to the large number of dogs.

Construction work is currently being carried out on certain areas of the walk, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the walk. This was a great walk to get back into the groove of walking. A good ratio of uphill and flat terrain making it a walk that challenges you just the right amount if you’re a beginner. Dogs are allowed off the leash and there is beautiful scenery to enjoy. We enjoyed a coffee at the Palmers Remuera cafe before our walk.

Most of the 3km loop is concrete or boardwalk but there are enough ups and downs that I was well tired by the end. Some waterski here and others race model boats but my favourite moment was catching birds roosted in an almost exact copy of the vultures in the film Jungle Book
