Canada can hold its own with these stunning views. They are right up there with any other view throughout the world. The colours of the glacier waters, the magnificent mountains and trees were awesome and jaw-dropping. Kananaskis Village was also lovely. What a beautiful country we live in!

First time experienced the drive on Hwy 742 from Upper Kananaski to Spray Lakes into Canmore and thankful I had a truck because this was the worst gravel road Hwy I’ve ever driven. Unfortunately this was a beautiful drive that I wasn’t able to enjoy because of the focus needed to avoid huge pot holes. Highly recommend not using a car ! This was an 1.5 hour drive for 65 kms.....Hopefully this road will be improved and people can enjoy this scenic drive in the near future.

I completed most of this, but turned around after my hike at Chester Lake, as the road was too rough going further to Canmore. I would return in 2021 and determine the best time to venture out on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail in order to finish the Wildlife Drive.

We took this drive in late June from Canmore to highway 40. We timed it so that we were on that road between 8 - 9 pm on a light rain.
Because of the rain there was no dust, not much traffic and a lot of wildlife.
We saw a big black bear first near the dam of spray lake reservoir. Then a lot of deer, some with young. Also a lot of small creatures like hares and birds.
When we were close to reaching highway 40 we saw a mama bear with two little ones on the roadside.
In all these spots we had ample space to stop safely and watch the wildlife from inside the vehicle.
There are so many scenic points along the way like ponds, lakes, day use areas, viewpoints, hiking areas and even if you don’t see any wildlife it’s still a very beautiful drive.
When you go, take the food and drink you’ll need in the vehicle so you’ll not need to get into contact with anyone (this is still pandemic times!)
There’s also no cellphone coverage so be prepared for any emergencies (spare tire, full tank, etc)
It is a gravel road but most vehicles can easily go on it, since anyway you would go slow to not scare animals away. However it’s very bumpy so if that is uncomfortable think twice about taking this drive.

What a great find doing this drive. Apparently part of this road is closed down come December so the animals can enjoy no traffic. Lots of places to explore off the highway. Many places to take hikes to see falls etc
There are animal warnings because this is the wilderness so be prepared and read signs. Takes a whole day to exlpore if you plan to stop and explore. Some hikes are short with nice rewards. Example Troll Falls. Also the resort by golf course has amazing views.

Schon oberhalb von Canmore startet die Strecke mit einem wunderschönen Blick in das Tal um Canmore. Es folgen tolle Seen und großartige Natur, die sich auch im Winter lohnt.

This is a beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies with awesome scenery and abundant wildlife. Hwy 742 is gravel and rough in many spots, but drivable by any type of car. If you visit Canmore this drive is highly recommended.

Driving on the unmade road was not too onerous and, as we stopped to see the views fairly regularly, very enjoyable. Some wildlife but that’s chance so take what comes and enjoy the mountainous backdrop, lakes, Kananaski village (good facilities and washrooms) and picnic sites.
You could either take the full circular tour or just take the off road route if travelling between Calgary and Canmore.

It’s not a fast easy drive but potential to see lots of animals. Rough roadway but plenty of places to stop. We drove a long way before we saw a young elk... I think. Then drove for quite a while before we saw a bear!! Beautiful views along the way even if you aren’t lucky enough to see wild life.

Loved the golden yellow trees and even spotted some deer scampering up the hillside. The different lakes were pretty to stop and take photos of and just a very nice drive.

I can't speak to the drive this time of year, but we did the rough gravel road in July and it was absolutely beautiful. I realize the weather this time of year makes the decision very different than when we did it. One thing I'll say is, take a paper map. There is absolutely no service up there in our experience.

We want to drive from Canmore to Fernie using this road as much as possible in one day (early September) in a SUV. Is this do-able? About how long would it take? Is it wise to do it in early September?

Hi sorry just read this now. This road is beautiful especially if you spot the animals. Need to drive fairly slow in order to try and see bears as it’s diffi. My husband was driving s but too fast but only my mom spotted the 2 bear cubs then we saw the huge grizzly mom! The road looos back from where you want to head to Ferguson. It takes a mimimum of 3 hours to drive the loop to enjoy the scenery and hopefully see something. They locals say we were fortunate to see as much as we did on 2 of ourvdrives. It was early September we saw the grizzly, cubs, moose and baby etc., if you take it from Canmore ... oncwvyou are at the end of the loop it will take you an approx 1 hour drive to get back to Canmore and then head to Fergie. Maybe start loop at closer entrance from Calgary... I think the road is near the Casino. Not sure how much time you have but it is a beautiful drive/scenery with stop off points with picnic benches and outhouses/washrooms provided by parks canada. If you go, take binoculars, relax with the drive, enjoy the views and picnic lunch. Anymore questions feel free to ask . I may even have some pictures I could email you if you provide your direct email address.
