I shop at Skeena mall and like the cleanliness of it! Most of the merchants are friendly. Only wish there were more outlets to choose from. I like the fact that there is a grocery store and a drug store included.

The most interesting thing about this mall is the huge marijuana store sign----I gather this store has just opened. It's also the home of Save On Food----a B.C. chain that used to be notorious for avoiding every carrying anything local (is it still that way?), All the stores are pretty ordinary----at least those that were open. It was a Monday and about 1/3 of the stores were closed. No food court.

Checked out the Retail scene and found some unique gems. There was a retro candy store that carried all your fsvourites from ehen I was a kid. The staff was both friendly and helpful .

Much like its counterpart in Prince Rupert, the Skeena Mall has been serving residents of Terrace for many a decade. The Skeena Mall, much like Rupert Square, has seen and experienced many a shift over its lifetime and, much like the Rupert Square, Skeena Mall serves as a microcosm of sorts for Terrace in a general sense.

The Skeena Mall has been a fixture of Terrace for well over thirty years. Over the last three decades, the mall has expanded, reorganized, reconfigured and downsized according to the social shifts and overarching economy of the area. I’ve come to believe that if you want to gauge the life of a community, check out its mall – if it has one. Such social gathering places serve as important indicators of social economics and hint at the political winds, whatever they may be. The Skeena Mall is no exception to this observation.

As a young lad I remember visiting the Skeena Mall with my grandparents whenever we’d visit the Terrace area. In terms of its overall size, the mall hasn’t changed, but the shops housed within it certainly have, though not drastically unlike some other shopping centres. For example, Skeena Mall used to house a Carters Jewellers store as well as its own Tim Hortons. Now, however, the only eatery in the mall is Wings (see my earlier review) – and it can only be accessed from the outside.

I did say above that the Skeena Mall reminds me, in many ways, of the Rupert Square and that’s true in a lot of respects: 1) Both malls have been serving their communities for a few decades; 2) both have seen and experienced change; 3) Both are currently in what I’d call a depressed state. This last point is perhaps the most cogent. If you walk through Skeena, for the most part, you’ll be wandering through a largely empty mall, at least in terms of foot traffic. But in terms of stores, Skeena definitely has its Rupert counterpart beat. Of the 27 available spaces, only 8 are currently vacant. As well, Skeena Mall carries with it some fairly attractive shops, including: Save-On, Winners, Sports Chek, Wings, Ardene and The Source, to name a few. Sometimes you can actually come across some pretty decent bargains.

On the plus side, Skeena does benefit from the fact that it is centrally located and has ample free parking. Admittedly because the mall experience here isn’t terribly impressive I often make use of the free parking and walk elsewhere (so much more convenient than parking on the street). Such are the consequences of being in an otherwise depressed state, I guess.

In short, the mall does indeed serve as microcosm of city. With Terrace’s political and economic fortunes currently in the air, so too are those of Skeena Mall. The end result? An overall mediocre shopping experience.
