You would have a hard time accidentally stumbling upon this museum, located in a largely residential area several blocks off the main road through O'Leary in the western region of PEI; you pretty much have to set your sights in advance on coming here. We did so, and we found the museum to be surprisingly interesting. It is far more than agricultural; as is documented in interesting fashion, potatoes have been the subject of scorn, admiration and necessity across many societal classes on several continents for centuries.

As a major added bonus, we always thought we knew which potatoes were best for mashing, but one exhibit here says we were wrong -- and explains why. Upon return to the home kitchen, it became clear the museum was correct; ours are now much smoother. What a great return on our decision to come here. If you are anywhere in this direction, the museum is worth an interesting -- and sometimes very helpful -- hour or so of your time.

This Museum was totally charming and very informative. The exhibits were extremely interesting and we enjoyed the Rick Mercer videos they had playing to explain harvesting and potato chip making.

This was so much more than I expected. It was a little drive to get there, but it was worth it. Great place to learn about potato cultivation, and the important role they play in our culture. Plus, make sure you go into the big room where they keep all the old tractors and farm equipment! Plus there is a section dedicated to local history that has all kinds of cool retro technology. All in all I was very impressed. Definitely worth a visit!

I was expecting more from this museum being that PEI is the top producer of potatoes in Canada. Sure, there was some small farming equipment, but what about the type of equipment used today? It was interesting learning about the types of potato diseases and pests who ruin crops. I usually love reading all the information and history at each plaque, but it was a bit dry at times. How about some quotes from farmers about life on the potato farm? It would be great if there were more exhibits geared toward younger children that can't read yet or get tired of reading. We liked the fisheries museum a lot better, as there were diorama's which give you a more living image of life on a farm. The Rick Mercer report videos were educational and funny and easy to listen to under the domed speakers.

We decided to have lunch as well and my husband and daughter had poutine, which you can't really mess up too bad, but it didn't look appealing to me. My youngest had the grilled cheese which looked good, however, my other daughter and I had the potato soup and it was just peeled potatoes cubes in some flavourless chicken broth water. I was expecting a creamy potato soup, not potatoes in water. The biscuits that came with the soup were soft and fresh.

I can't recommend the museum for any age group and don't come for the food either, you will be sorely disappointed. I hope that with some helpful feedback improvements can be made.

Potatoes and Prince Edward Island are synonymous and during the summer virtually every farmer's field has potato flowers in bloom. The Canadian Potato Museum will tell you everything you could ever want to know about the spud from its origins in South America to its dominance as world food staple second only to corn. The museum is divided into two parts, one dealing with potatoes and the other with the local history of the area. Sometimes these local museums can be quite dull, but the exhibits here are interesting and well displayed. We didn't try the fries so I can't comment on them, but everything else about this place was quite interesting.

A potato museum on PEI should have the best fries right? Well sadly wrong. We made a special trip to get their fries and poutine and were extremely disappointed with the fries. They were really hard, not sure whether they were overcooked or had dried out, and some of them had an odd sweet taste. Maybe it was an off day but we won't be returning to try again.

After driving past fields and fields of potatoes with some blooming in July, we reached the Potato Museum in O'Leary, PEI where we were greeted by a huge sculpted potato--great photo op. The museum was fascinating. It dealt with the beginnings of the wild potato in South America to it's becoming a major food source world over. And who knew there were so many kinds of potatoes. My husband, who is a farm boy, was very interested in the antique farm machinery but even more interested in the cafe which offered all things potato. We had potato soup and baked potatoes and did not indulge in the many kinds of fries so we could leave room for of all things, potato fudge. Seeing is believing. Have fun.

If before this trip I were told there is a potato museum and i may enjoy it - I would not believe. Nevertheless there is this museum in O'Leary and it was very nice and very interesting. I believe no traveler in PEI should miss it.

We weren't expecting greatness, but ended up spending hours here! Its much more than a story about potatoes. There is a huge section that recreates each room of the house and medical facilities, way back in time. Another section is a massive barn filled with classic....farm implements! Who knew!

A local resident highly recommended the museum for its wonderful food. It seemed very cozy but when we arrived at the counter, no one wanted to serve us. A group of employees stood nearby and chatted, saw us waiting but continued to talk. We had never been there before so decided that maybe we had to sit down to be served but someone standing nearby said that we had to order from the counter.

After getting served, we sat down and received our meals but no drinks. I had to ask the young lady twice before she finally brought them to us. I was a bit surprised because only one other couple sat in the dining room. Although the food was great, the experience as a whole was just awkward and next time we're on the island, we probably wouldn't go back.
