I was surprised how quiet the center was when we were visiting on a Saturday because during the week the parking lot was very busy, glad it wasn't so busy when we went.

If you want to get a sense of what the Haida culture was like, be sure to visit the Heritage Center. There are amazing artifacts in the museum and the totems are stunning. You'll learn all about totems and the different reasons for why they are built. A amazing cultural experience

A unique museum that is actually run by the people whose art and traditions it showcases! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, beautiful exhibits and great outdoor area, plus a tantalizing gift shop!

We always visit Haida Heritage Centre when we come to the island. Specifically to poke around the gift shop, and check out their temporary installation. This time, while there was a small guided tour in progress, the place was almost deserted. We decided to check out what was on the menu and grab some takeaway and to our astonishment, the Kay Bistro sat abandoned, looking forlorn. A hand written note advised that buying pop and water was on the honour system, and give the money to the gift shop.

After an interesting stroll around the canoes we ended up in the lobby where a local artist was working and displaying her paintings. It turned out we had a lot in common, so our visit was not lost. She advised that the entrepreneur who ran Kay Bistro now had an establishment in Queen Charlotte called Blacktail. We went there for dinner, and I wrote a separate review of that experience.

I note that some reviewers say that "it's Haida Gwaii", and one should basically lower ones travel expectations. In my view that is a cop-out. If you are in the hospitality and restaurant business, you ought to be there because you love people, you love good food, and enjoy making us happy.

I do hope that an enterprising and hospitable chef takes on the challenge of Kay Bistro, including First Host training for the staff.

This museum has an open air part with several fascinating Totem Poles (it’s well worth taking the Totem Pole Tour to hear the stories.) it also has an indoor section with several exhibits and a temporary exhibit space. Finally there is a shed with some canoes. It’s a great place to learn about the Haida and Haida Gwaii. The Haida guides are knowledgeable and patient with your questions. A must visit when you’re on Haida Gwaii, it takes at least a couple of hours to see everything. There are several different tours offered at various times. The café is closed just now, but there is a nice little gift shop with a variety of local items for sale. Ample parking. The only cost is for entry; parking and the tours are included.

A fantastic display and explanation of Haida Heritage and culture. Outstanding displays and fabulous facility and layout. There are always activities so worth calling ahead to find out times. Today they did an explanation of the 6 totems located on site. Was a great glimpse into Haida history. I would suggest starting here before going anywhere to give you an idea of the traditions and culture

We found the center very interesting to visit, so pleased that a lot of artifacts have been repatriated back to Haida Gwaii, that were in American Museums!

So much culture and history. Amazing artifacts. Lots of great information from staff. The bistro is shut down which used to be amazing as well. A must see.
