We visited, and weren’t overly impressed with the zoo apart from the gorilla island enclosure, most of the animals (especially the lions) had ridiculously small enclosures and the whole zoo looked very tired and in need of some updating.
However the biggest disappointment was the one restaurant cafe on the site. The menu showed no allergenic information, and a check on the website menu showed there was nothing that was suitable for an adult with a gluten/cereal free need. I think there may have been one option for a child style choice.
We left disappointed with our visit, and won’t be recommending Bristol Zoo to anyone.

Pity it is closing on the whole very good apart from the only place to sit inside and have a cup of tea shut at 3 sponsored a penguin could not see them swimming and only a few left felt a bit cheated as took sponsorship for basically half a herd and half a year. Toilet was disgusting. Sorry let down by facilities

I've decided to come along here as I heard they were closing for good in September. So for the first time in almost 30 years, I've decided to come here and I got my money's worth. I really enjoyed a couple of hours here. Would urge you all to come along while you still can before they close for good in September.

We really enjoyed our visit today, with teenage daughter for a long morning. We had never been before and it’s a lovely site with beautiful planting and has grown around the original historic buildings. It’s moving to another site at the end of the Summer, so catch it before it closes. The gorillas were the best.

Used to come to this zoo regularly with our kids. It is due to close this summer to move to a larger and more modern site
Visit was for personal nostalgia
Parts of the zoo are looking old and tired but that’s why they are moving!
If you have fond memories from days gone by visit before September when it closes for good

My four friends and I, all approaching 70, decided to visit the zoo for a Birthday treat. We grew up in Bristol and remember past visits, in my case over 40 years ago.
Yes, there were some empty cages and the bigger animals had been moved but nevertheless we still enjoyed our time there. Plenty of wildlife to see, lovely gardens and a trip down memory lane

We enjoyed our day at Bristol Zoo as it evoked happy memories of sunny summer trips there when our children were young.
But there's no hiding its sad decline or the atmosphere of a place fast winding down. Its time has passed and it is long past its peak with empty cages and blanked-out exhibits across the site. Maybe the new bigger site can restore its glory days.....but it will need to be a lot more than just another so-so safari park
Whatever the Clifton site continues to September, but I really think that in its current state, prices need to be cut immediately.

I’ve loved Bristol Zoo since I was a child, and have in the past enjoyed taking my children to have a similarly magical experience.
Today’s visit was singularly non-magical. Lots of enclosures empty and abandoned, many animals just missing entirely despite being shown on the map. Facilities that look a bit tired and unloved.
The site is due to be closed in September and things are clearly being wound down. In that circumstance charging full price admission (with plenty of inducements in the checkout process to add an additional donation) feels like profiteering.
Charity or not, we felt ripped off. Haven’t yet tried the new zoo at Cribbs Causeway, but Bristol Zoo is a sad shadow of its former glory.

Be aware that you could lose a substantial amount of time that could be spent in the zoo doing this course and frustrated/distressed, cold children. My kids spent an hour stationary in the rain (and cold because the safety rules mean no hoods allowed) because someone ahead of them got so anxious while waiting for another child, who was struggling and very slow, that she couldn’t move and it took a considerable amount of time for the staff to respond, get around the course to help and then eventually get the child down.
I went to the reception to ask before the child was taken down if there was anything that could be done as my kids were struggling with the wait at height in the rain and we didn’t have long at the zoo. I was offered a refund. Unfortunately this was not honoured by the ZooRopia staff. Apparently they only refund if takes longer than 90min - it took 85min in our case! Despite the reception member of staff having offered it and filled in the paperwork.
If you opt to do this be prepared to be stood stationary at height for an hour.

Compass group, is the same low standard of food being served to HM soldiers the same as being served at Bristol Zoo?

Hi
Planning on visiting on Sunday.
Is it likely that the car parks will be full? If so where is the alternative location?
Many thanks

When the family and I went recently we got there about 11:45 on a Sunday morning and the North carpark nearest the entrance was full but we got a space in the West car park which is a very short walk away and clearly signed.
However being Easter and with a sunny day predicted I suspect the zoo will be crowded so the only alternative parking is in the surrounding residential streets. Although this is an area of residents parking permits parking is free on Sunday’s and bank holidays.

Hi Nicola --- I was thinking of visiting Bristol Zoo and read your review!!!!!! ----- You haven't even mentioned the actual Zoo!!! So a very weird review of a Zoo you have given! --- Didn't you realise that you were reviewing a ZOO and not a Cafe!!! Hahaha but perhaps I will just take a packed lunch!!

It is a very good zoo however why can't the lions be moved up to wildplace where they can feel grass under their feet and have more space ? It seems so cruel to keep them in such a confined space?

Wildplace is still very much under development so I am not sure what the end intention is for the lions but I volunteered at Bristol Zoo for 17 years, up until recently, so I will ask!
