I really enjoyed my visit to the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology (MAA). It is a university museum and although only relatively small by museum standards, it still holds many incredibly important artefacts, works of art, documents and photographs representative of humanity’s history.
I found it all very thought provoking. There are some really amazing exhibits and although I initially felt a little uncomfortable how some of the items on display had been obtained and removed from their indigenous homes, I took the trouble to educate myself further on the museum and its ethics in relation to such items.
This research taught me that MAA is actually one of the first UK museums to return artefacts to a nation of origin (Uganda 1961) and since this time has been committed to cultural exchange and collaborative scholarship, involving local and indigenous people associated with the collections.
The museum is set over three floors. The ground floor tells all the local history and displays artefacts discovered in the local area. The following two floors are dedicated to artefacts obtained from other parts of the world, from their indigenous communities.
I really enjoyed my visit. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The museum can be easily enjoyed in a relatively short amount of time.
It has some wonderful exhibits, including some of the Benin bronzes, which are now on loan to the museum. There is also a wonderful totem pole that just fits into its home, the carving of which is much more detailed at the bottom than at the top (the master craftsmen working at the bottom and their apprentices working at the top). There is also part of the stone screen from Winchester Cathedral, and countless other wonderful curiosities and pieces of history.
In my opinion, a museum certainly worthy of a visit and one which is free to enter, requesting only a donation.

Not what I expected!
Was in here for around 40 mins.
There is no cafe but there are some around.
The toilets are not very clean
There are more exciting museums available

We visited with you children as part of a day trip exploring Cambridge.
The museum is free to enter and is spread across 3 levels. A great collection. For me specifically I enjoyed the ground floor with its local collection. Having lived in Cambridgeshire for 15 years it was fascinating.
There were activity sheets available from the friendly staff for children which kept them entertained and allowed us to explore.
Allow an hour with children, longer if you are with adults properly exploring each exhibit.
A great part of the Cambridge offering.

Plenty of exhibits, especially the various artificers from many cultures around the world. The local archeological finds are interesting. Free to enter.

Popped in for a quick look around and pleasantly surprised at the number of interesting exhibits. Particularly taken with a group of European students having a fascinating discussion about race! Great place to while away a couple of hours if you’re in the area.

Went to visit on the 28 December. I called to see if they were open the voicemail said they would be their website said they were open Google said they were open. They were closed! Very disappointed a triumph of education over intelligence. They couldn't even manage a note on the door. Very disappointing.

My children thoroughly enjoyed reading about all the different kinds of artefacts on display, especially on the first floor as they got to learn a bit more about the previous inhabitants on Cambridgeshire.

We visited the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, which had been recommended to us as it holds
World-class Collections of Art and Artefacts from all over the World.
We were fascinated by the many objects ranging from Stone Tools and Ancient Pots to Tribal Sculptures and Paintings by famous Artists.
This Museum is well worth a Visit whilst in Cambridge. Admission is free.

I’d like to draw some of the exhibits. Are there seats to use on the way round? Or is it ok to bring a small folding stool as long as I don’t block any routes? Thanks
Skrevet 11. november 2018
Yes there are seats as you go round but they might not be where you want to draw. Not sure if there are any rules about drawing in this museum but we did see groups of students drawing in other University museums so it could well be alright. May be phone them before going to be on the safe side.
