This is a lovely church which rose again from the ashes after it was bombed during WW2. Don't miss the story of the Resurgam door. The cross beneath the tower is lit with 1178 light bulbs to commemorate those killed in the Plymouth Blitz.
The John Piper windows are stunning, especially on a sunny day when the light floods in, illuminating the surroundings with all the different colours.
There's plenty more to see too, from a C12th tomb, memorials to the great and good on the walls, funeral hatchments and royal coat of arms beneath the tower.
Take time to talk to the stewards who are a wealth of information about the church and its history. Find out about Prysten House behind the church and the ruined Charles Church nearby...

Lovely place to spend an hour or so - we found it very peaceful. No service on but you can enter when you want

The centre of town was very quiet. A partially eased lockdown continues. We haven’t heard the impressive bells of St Andrews ringing for more than three months. So we were slightly and happily taken by surprise this morning when parking briefly beside the guildhall we suddenly heard the carillon marking the hour by repeatedly ringing out the first few bars of Rock of Ages. Quite an emotional few minutes. Perhaps a little more so because although listening to a mechanical set of bells, we couldn’t help but think of the small string ensemble which features on all the films of the sinking Titanic with the musicians playing bravely on while the disaster and loss of life continues all around. Such is the backdrop of the virus in the city.

This is a lovely church with friendly staff who are only to happy to advise you on its highlights. You would never know that it had been so badly damaged during the war as it sits in the very heart of the city. There is some amazing modern stained glass that really beautifully reflects the light. Well worth calling in, particularly for a quiet moment to espcape the hussle outside!.

Πρόκειται για ένα υπέροχο περιβάλλον με έντονα θρησκευτικά συναισθήματα. Ένα μέρος που πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να το επισκεφτείς.

We popped in while waiting for a bus and had a very brief look around. A guide told us something about the history and the stained glass is beautiful. Will definitely go back next time we're in Plymouth

We visited this church and were amazed with it's history and how in was heavily damaged in WWII and subsequently rebuilt. The photos of the church after bombings were incredible and yet this church was resurrected ! Such a great story. An adjacent building here is the oldest in Plymouth, early 15th century, really nice walking around the area and looking at it's beauty and architecture from so long ago. Great stained glass in here and an amazing organ. Great place to stop at when in the this area.

On current site since 8th Century, and frequented by famous figures of history such as Catherine of Aragon and Sir Francis Drake. The church was bombed during the blitz in 1941 and rebuilt between 1949 and 1957.
Some beautiful stained glass windows the features for me.

Is there a crypt and if so is it of interest and accessible?

Where can you park as have to attend a funeral?

Car park just west of tower beside Guildhall or multi-storey further down behind the theatre. On street or in little car parks is poor odds pot luck.

What days and times are the bells rung (including practices)?

Before matins Sunday morning, at least one night a week and sometimes before weddings. I've always though that it would be good if the very best was put in for a funeral but apart from a single tolling bell I've not noticed a full on performance at a send off.

Why is it called St Andrew's? Has it always had that name?

Anyone know the times the church is open to the public, to take a look around or spend some quiet time? I know the volunteers run a tea bar and bookshop in the rear corners and the church has some signs which warn when there will be a wedding or funeral service.

It seems to be open to the public during the daytime till about four. Services are open. I have been told that we can't come in if there is a concert rehearsal.
