The Compass was a sad generally quiet and empty attempt at an ex-gay pub wanting to cling to some residual trade while pulling a wider clientele but it didn't succeed. It has new owners. There is a fresh Tripadvisor listing under the revived Swallow name and Compass the ad ought probably to be shifted to Tripadvisor's CLOSED limbo.

No, this is not a mistake. Yes the Swallow was its last name but one and was well known as a bustling gay and gay friendly pub. The experiment of tarting it up and calling it the Comlass didn't work. But the For Sale sign has come down, there has been some deft reprinting and decorating. When we came by a few days ago it was if the good fairy had waved her magic wand and the place had come straight back to life. The sign proclaims Bar, Coffee, Cocktails, Karaoke and Show Bar. Just what sad old Plymouth needs to bring the diverse and wild partying underbelly back into the action.

Always a pity to see this especially because under different names and colours this place has done lots of trade and particularly as the Swallow had a significant place in the nightlife of the city for decades. Expensively revamped barely a year ago it never seems to have taken off or caught much attention and there are few things worse than an empty pub. I wish it well and hope that some resurrection may still be possible.

We often walk down North Street to get to the Barbican on Friday and Saturday nights. The dozens of loose paving stones outside this pub make it hazardous. I have noticed for months that the Compass seems never to have more than a handful of customers. Yesterday we thought we would take a look in just to see what it's like. There were two people at the end of the bar ahead of us I think talking to a lonely DJ. There was one bar an spending more time outside than behind his bar. The place is well decorated and seems to have no particular features to deter custom. It just seems to have run right down and not attracting anyone. Certainly no sign of fun at 9.30 pm on a dry warm Saturday night in July.

Not sure how well it's doing but this place reopened about a year ago after the previous management ended a long association. It appears to have become more 'gay friendly' than 'gay' and when we were last in here on the start of a crawl around half a dozen Barbican pubs at 8 on a Friday I doubt there were more than ten other customers. I think there are some good photos of the present interior easily accessible on Google Streetview so you can see that despite the nautical theme the inside is not of itself particularly camp. Staff were friendly and prices about average on our night but it was fairly obvious that this genre of pub in Plymouth is losing out to the new OMG pub over by the barbican harbour.
