Good walks, awful parking arrangements.

We inadvertently chose a bad day as the visitor centre was closed. This was a major setback. Two comments. First the good: excellent walks for wheelchair users with miles of smooth tarmac. Now the bad: chaotic and expensive car parking if no disabled spaces left. We were unable to pay for more than an hour at a time, which was wholly inadequate. This was due to a parking meter fault (many were out of action). One of our party was hit by a parking fine which did kind of spoil the day a bit!

Great afternoon out and about
jul. 2020
We spent a good few hours here - a lovely place particularly in the sunshine.

On the day we went the shop was open but not the visitor centre which was a pity. We had a look round the garden then went for a walk to the head. Staff in the visitor centre were able to advise on the best routes to take with a wheelchair.
Lots to look at, interesting interpretation boards to help.

Wheelchair accessibility
We went as far as the beach huts without too much problem. Couldn't get onto the beach. Accessible toilet was grotty.

COVID-19
All was fine. Not too crowded anywhere. Hand sanitiser in shop but no soap in toilet.

Relaxing, plenty of reasonably priced parking. Dog friendly, including beach.suitable for ages, but some areas could be difficult for those with mobility issues

One of the best coastal and nature walks I have ever done
jan. 2020
It's an easy walk on well formed paths, many of which are paved and all of which are accessible for just about any fitness level (although at least one place involved stairs so wheelchairs may have to bypass a couple of spots or plan ahead). The walk itself is great with undulations to get the heart pumping - but nothing too tough. The scenery is really beautiful with coastal and estuarine heathland and some wooded areas - the vistas off to Bournemouth and Christchurch are really stunning. and there is a great visitors centre to help you plan and a nice Cafe to have a break at the end. I highly recommend this place - its not testing for serious hikers, but really accessible and worthwhile for everyone - but you'd better like dogs because there are hundreds of them, clearly a highlight for most local dog owners wanting to get a walk for them and their friend.

Great walks to Mudeford, Christchurch Priory or Bournemouth Pier and even Poole/Sandbanks if you feel energetic. The car park at Hengistbury Head and the fantastic cafe there provide an ideal start for all these destinations. The added bonus is the Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre which is world class.

More to do than you think at Hengistbury
sep. 2019 • Par
Went for a Sunday ride out to Hengistbury Head thinking it was just a hill to climb. How wrong we were. Firstly, there is a car park but some people parked out on the road. Maybe the yellow lines don’t apply on a Sunday? Give yourself plenty of time. We took our lunch and picked a spot on the beach. Many people seem to take their dogs here, so be warned if you’re not a doggy person. Suitably refreshed, we went to the cafe for toilets and an ice cream - many had sold out, but- walk on a bit further to the visitor centre and they have ice cream too! A shop and interactive displays about the area kept us engrossed for some time. There is also a pleasant garden area to explore or just sit in for a while. Then on to the climb. Not very good signage for multiple pathways so make sure you have your phone map with you. Aim to the right if you want to reach the top of the hill. Wonderful views of Christchurch, Mudeford, and the coastline beyond, as well as out to sea. If you’re feeling energetic, continue along the pathway and you’ll reach the end of the peninsula. Keep going round and you’ll reach the path to numerous colourful beach cabins which you will have seen from the hill. We didn’t have time to explore here so continued round and did the return route along the edge of the lagoon. As we marched along ( car park ticket running out) we were passed by a very full land train which seems to run from the visitor centre/cafe to the beach cabins. Again we didn’t have time to investigate this.
A long walk for little ones, so be warned. Scooter/trikes needed.
We had 4 hours and it wasn’t long enough. But a very enjoyable time.

An amazing wealth of knowledge in the displays about this beautiful area can be found at this centre as well as a well stocked gift shop.
