A great place to visit - My kind of Willy Wonker’s Chocolate Factory

De Danann Antiques Centre - Dorset - November ‘18

We’ve never been to Dorset before, but we were making this incredibly long journey to take our Son to his next Army Base in Bovington, so we booked a B&B and made the most of our journey.
We had previewed what attractions were in the surrounding area to visit and this Antiques Centre made the list because I love everything Oldey Worldey and mooching around any antiques centres - on a good day!

The De Dennan Antiques Centre is easy enough to find, and driving down what appears to be a normal looking road (a car garage on the left and a petrol station and another car garage on the right), you will find growing in size a little way up the road ahead of you - 3 beautiful church spires......The Antiques Centre is just after the car garage on the right hand side, so we didn’t make it to the church spires to see what they looked like.
We got to the centre in good time and bagged the very last parking space inside the gates, there aren’t many spaces to park, so you may end up parking elsewhere. To the right of the building there is a Cafe - Nina’s Cafe where a handful of people were sitting outside on the benches under the canopy with vintage bunting enjoying a cuppa.
There are a few garden bits and bobs outside before you get to the doors - different statues and benches, and then once inside.....well for me going into any antiques shop is like stepping into Willy Wonker’s Chocolate Factory!! I absolutely LOVE looking at EVERYTHING remotely old pre-1930/40’s at least!
There are 2 floors - and there isn’t a lift, so if you struggle walking, then pack your power packs 😊😊, the top floor doesn’t have too much stuff to rummage/look through - It felt like going up into someone else’s loft, seeing parts of the roof that needed repairing, and the flooring feels a little wobbly too, be very careful as you walk, I had a little trouble moving around up there with my stick and the obstacles all over the floor.
Downstairs there are LOTS of items to look at and they aren’t overly priced either - from nic-nacs, dolls, toys, books, brooches, glass, cutlery, clothing different sized wooden boxes, the old irons, lots of furniture, infact too much to remember. It was my birthday, so Hubby treated me to a few things, but we certainly didn’t think we’d be leaving £80 lighter - Oh dear 😂😂 If money wasn’t an issue though, I would have bought so much more. I know that I am very much looking forward to bringing my wooden cutlery box with it’s beautiful brass clasps back to life; I love all my little brooches and now also have as much Frenchic paint in my house as a Stockist. If you are looking for this new Vrenchic paint to upcycle old furniture, then you will not be disappointed because they have most of the colours....I struggled to stop, and the lady was more than happy to help pick my colours from the neatly arranged pyramids. All of the furniture is gorgeous, and some of it has been painted with the Frenchic paint, which also helped me choose my colours!
I have one regret since our visit, and that is that there were 2 strings of little jingly bells hanging on the underneath of the stairwell, one was more jingly than the other and I really wished I had bought it now, but I wasn’t sure how much money Hubby had on him, and the string of bells was £10. I think about it often and am always annoyed with myself for not buying them, but we won’t be going all that way again until our Son has finished his Phase2 training and leaves for his Regiment, and even then I don’t know if he will be leaving on his own or if he will even need us to collect him with all of his gear....and by that time I’m sure the strings of jingly bells will be gone!
I was very happy with my purchases - and it may sound stupid to a lot of people, but I buy items that ‘speak’ to me. I wish old items could actually talk and tell us their story, wouldn’t that be great! (Did I just write that down, sorry folks...I make myself sound like an absolute Nutter!! 😂😂) I said to Hubby at one point that I think I could quite easily live in that building - amongst all the old furniture and things (whispering to me 🤣😂).
Anyway, the Antiques Centre is wonderful and the 2 Ladies in there are very nice. I think the younger lady was the owner, although I’m not 100% sure. They let you get on with browsing without bothering or pressuring you - unless you ask them for help of course. We chatted with them for a long time at the end of our purchase at the till - very nice and welcoming....We have been in a number of Antiques Centres and some of the staff are very standoffish, but you won’t have that worry here.
Anyway, I hope your Daughter is safe and shining in her Army training too!

Enjoy, Nicola x

This antiques centre has a good stock on 2 floors and I spent a happy hour there even though I did not find what I was looking for. No matter, I still came away with something of interest. This was hardly surprising as there was such a varied stock on view - books inc. Prices seemed reasonable too. This centre will be on my standard route on Dorchester market day. ( Weds.)
