The trains on this route are modern extremely comfortable Greater Anglia stock built by Stadler. The journey travels through the lovely Norfolk countryside to Sheringham where you can pick up the North Norfolk Line (Poppy Line) just across the road or alight at Hoveton and Wroxham for the Broads and Bure Valley Railway.

I cannot possibly see how it is justifiable for a one way trip between Wickford and Liverpool Street to cost over £17, the equivalent of over twice the hourly minimum wage, for a 40 minute journey.
Absolutely shameful.

As a family we have traveled all Norfolk's heritage lines, but the Bittern Line is a great alternative for seeing the countryside, and cheaper than its vintage counterparts. Cromer to Norwich, two adults (under 5's free), was a reasonable £17 return for an off peak day ticket. The ticket machine at Cromer was card only, but a lot of people were buying tickets on the train.
We really enjoyed the journey, sitting on different sides each way to get different views. I think the scenery rivalled any of the heritage lines, perhaps save for the section on the North Norfolk line between Sheringham and Weybourne. There are glimpses of the Broads between Hoveton & Wroxham and Norfolk, plus our young sons enjoyed spotting things along the way such as tractors.
The only shame is that there is not a smooth connection to the train that would take you on from Norwich to Great Yarmouth - the Yarmouth train leaves shortly before the Bittern Line gets in, meaning there would be a long wait at Norwich for the connection. As it was, we were going to spend some time in Norwich itself, and there are other interesting spots to get on and off along the way.
Highly recommended for Norfolk tourists as well as the locals who use it!

First train couldn't manage to go 2 stops on time so I miss the connecting hourly train. Thanks for being so useless.

I travelled on the Bittern Line between Sheringham and Hoveton & Wroxham. It cost me only £6.60 for a return and tickets could be purchased by card only at Sheringham station.
PLEASE NOTE! The ticket machine DOES NOT take cash payments. However, you can buy tickets on the train from the guard.
Travelling from Sheringham to Cromer you get glimpses of the sea and there are is still plenty of lovely scenery as you travel along. At Cromer the train reverses and you head inland and the scenery is more rural. That does not mean it is any less pleasant. Lots of trees and fields to enjoy and some of the stations have been sponsored and are well maintained.
During the day it is an hourly service between Norwich and Sheringham but some of the smaller stations only have a two hourly service so if you are getting on board check before you travel.

I've used this line frequently between Wroxham and Sheringham and have always been impressed by the friendly, helpful staff collecting fares - they always make a point of finding the cheapest possible fares and it's always been cheaper buying fares on the train than using a pre-booking on 'Trainline'.

The Bittern Line is described as 'one of the 60 most picturesque lines' in the world. Well it's not. Yes there are short glimpses of the broads and sea but the rest of the journey is just fields. It's destinations, from Norwich, of Wroxham, for the Bure Valley Line, and the seaside towns of Cromer and Sherringham are very nice and worth a visit but the train ride is just like many other rural train lines in Britain. The heritage line from Sherringham to Holt is the best part.
We found the staff very helpful and would still recommend taking the train to the seaside.

Went to Norwich for the day. Train that left Liverpool Street was old and despite paying for a first class seat, there was no wifi. Train arrived over 20 minutes late, which meant those going to Greater Yarmouth missed their connection and had to wait almost an hour for the next train. Afternoon train was more modern and had wifi but again 20 minutes late arriving at Liverpool Street. This seems to be the norm and something that needs to be factored in if you are travelling with them, particularly if you need to connect to another train along the way.

Used Abellio Greater Anglia to travel from Cambridge to London Liverpool Street. The train was on time on both outbound and inbound journeys. Seats are very comfortable with full tables between facing seats.
