I had an hour or so to kill so I visited the Bring no Clothes exhibition at the new space in Lewes. I found it expensive at £14 entry with no concessions for pensioners. The exhibition itself was underwhelming with some rather pretentious text describing the exhibits. I was out again after 20 minutes. I felt the whole experience has missed an opportunity to be more accessible in terms of affordability, less pretentious, more welcoming to the ordinary folks out there. And please change your policy so that you take cash!

We went to hear Natalie Haynes and thoroughly enjoyed the talk. It was well done and highly entertaining.
The cafe was a total disaster. Really badly laid out with the cash desk at the front so that you had to fight your way through people queuing to pay before you could see the cakes on offer which were in turn hidden by people waiting for their drink orders. You then had to go back and place your order at the till before returning to get your drinks in the cake area when they called your name. We were given our drinks but then there was no-one available to give us the cakes. What a mess! Surly staff too.

Took my parents for a day out, who are great art lovers and love painting and crafts (sewing and pottery) My husband and I were very disappointed and not inspired at all, and when I asked my parents on the way home, if it was to their taste, they admitted that it felt a little bit like the Emperors New Clothes. Now I understand that art is personal, one persons love of art is not another's, but it really is so overrated and pricey for what was on offer. I've read a lot about the Bloomsbury set and love that type of history but it was a disappointment in reality. The exhibition that weekend was laughable, decorated plates of men private parts that look as if they were painted by young school children! The cafe was expensive and chaotic. The gardens were the best part.

House and gardens were fabulous, beautifully done with perfect number of room guides and interesting objects. The home is a wonderful retreat from the classic country house visit, where instead of Adam chairs and plaster ceilings, unique painted decoration and romantic objects sing out from the walls. You feel as though Duncan or Vanessa could walk into the rooms at any moment, a very transportive experience.
The cafe, on the other hand, is a-bit style over substance. I’m not sure if we visited on a bad bad, but the menu was limited. Focaccia was the only option available for savoury, and as delicious as it was, seems odd to only serve that. The cakes were yummy.
Overall a lovely visit and wonderful history.

I’ve just returned from lunch with 6 friends st Charleston farmhouse cafe. A Hugely disappointing experience for all 7 of us. We will not return for lunch again. We would return for tea/coffee and cake. I chose the pasta bake….initially the person serving it filled up the bowl. The woman at the till then took this bowl to add salad and clearly thought her colleague had over filled the bowl (not so) and emptied out half of it and filled it up with salad. It was flavourful. But stodgy and overpriced for the small portion I was served. It cost £12 for this portion. Very small in my view. All my group found their ‘lunch’ choices disappointing and expensive for what they were served. I’m hugely disappointed as I chose this as a lunch venue for my group of friends and I feel bad that my friends had a bad experience of this cafe. What has happened as your lunch used to be superb? As always the location is fabulous but you really need to sort out your cafe and give better value for money. Specifically more food on the plate. Thank you

Attempted to visit the new Charleston in Lewes and its exhibition, 'Bring no Clothes'. I presented my Art Fund pass, which gets me 50% discount at Charleston - 'I'm afraid we don't take that, this is a different entity'. Oh, well, what about a concession because I am very old? 'We only offer concessions for people on disability benefit or pension credit.' £14 to see a few fatuous clothes - forget it.

Cafe; Another 'business' going cashless - shame, Vanessa and Duncan would be turning in their graves at this abuse of freedoms...for 'convenience'. Won't be going there again....

This is a very interesting and unusual house. I have visited twice, the first time when they still did tours and recently when you go round on your own. I’m so sad the tours have been stopped. They were so informative and brought the house alive

How can you get to Charleston from Alfriston without a car?

I think there is a bus which runs along the main a27 road and then it's a walk to Charleston from there of about 15 minutes I would say.

We are staying at a hotel in Blooomsbury in London on great Queen's Street. Which train station will take us to Lewes and how often to the trains run? Once we are at Lewes Station, is it more convenient to take a bus or a taxi Vanessa Bell's house; We need to be back at Lewes Station by 3: to catch the coach to Glynedebourne for a 6;20 opera performance. It it possible to do all of this in one day?

Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you very much for your question - we would be very happy to welcome you to Charleston.
Trains run from London Victoria to Lewes at regular intervals. Please look at the National Rail Enquiries website to consult for train times. Our House and Garden open from 12:00 midday. I would strongly recommend booking tickets online to Charleston to ensure you can enter the House at your preferred time; you should have no trouble going onwards to Glyndebourne later in the afternoon. While some buses run, they are not very frequent and may not co-incide well with your train time arrival - a taxi would afford greater flexibility in your schedule. They cost around £20. You might like to consider getting a taxi directly to Glyndebourne after your visit here, as Glyndebourne is located between Lewes and Charleston so this would save you doubling back on your journey. I hope this is helpful - please do get in touch again if we can help further.

Yes please, how long does it take from London by train and what is the cost? Cosf of entry to house?
Charleston
Lewes, UK
Dear Robyn,
Thanks for your question. Trains go from London Victoria to Lewes and take around 75 minutes. From Lewes you can get a bus to Charleston, but the timetable is quite infrequent so we recommend checking in advance. TripAdvisor unfortunately does not allow me to post you a link, but there is a link on our website for the bus timetable. On some days you may find it easier to take a taxi, which may cost around £20-£25 depending on traffic, etc.
We recommend booking our House tickets online, which cost £13.50 for Adults with Gift Aid. If you use Public Transport, we offer a 'Green' concession rate.
We look forward to your visit!

I am planning to visit on a Sunday in June from London by train. Can I get a taxi at Lewes train station and how much is the fare? Since there is no guided tour on Sunday, can one stay as long as one pleases or are visits restricted in terms of duration?
Charleston
Lewes, UK
Many thanks for your enquiry. There is a taxi rank from the top exit of Lewes Station. I would estimate this may cost approximately £20. You may like to book a taxi in advance with a local firm who can give you a fixed price or more accurate estimate.
On Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays the House has volunteer Stewards in each room to help bring everything to life. While we ask that you follow a particular route around the house where possible, you are very welcome to take as much time as you like while in the House.
We recommend booking your tickets online through our website to avoid disappointment on the day as we do limit the total number of visitors to the house. This both protects our fragile collection and allows visitors to enjoy the House without overcrowding.
We will look forward to welcoming you to Charleston in June and If we can help any further please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards,
Camilla Clark
