You cannot tell how from the outside but this is a beautiful house and and unexpectedly large garden for a town which is beautifully laid out. It has an interesting history. Well worth the visit. Would probably visit again if I was in Rye.

Lamb House, where American novelist Henry James lived for a number of years, is one of the more interesting tourist attractions in the small model town of Rye, especially for literary aficionados. A tour of the house will take you under an hour and includes the living room, bedroom, library and so on, including genuine furniture and items used by Henry James. Nice, but not spectacular. James entertained many fellow writers and artists in this house, some of whom I personally find more interesting, like e.g. Stephen Crane (author of "The Red Badge of Courage" and "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets") or painter John Singer Sargent, whose "Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose" is one of my great favourites. The volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. Just don't make the mistake I did and tell them that you find Henry James's own writing stuffy and boring! ;) - Anyway: A main attraction is the lovely garden, the largest of its kind in all of Rye. There you can relax for a while and imagine yourself to have been an important writer of the time.

Initially check the opening times as Lamb House is not open every day, and also ensure that you've checked n as an NT member (or paid) at the adjoining property before visiting. Informative guides and a pleasant garden to walk around. Situated at the top of Mermaid Street so try to take time for a stop off at the Mermaid Inn

A charming and understated place. If you want glamour, then avoid it. If you want to see a writer's domain, then this is for you. You can easily see that this is a place for a writer to be creative. The garden alone, not flashy or over developed , is a lovely place to relax and meditate, if you wished.
I also liked the story of George 1st, being an unexpected visitor and the owner turfed his pregnant wife out of her bed for the king! She gave birth whilst the king was still and named her son "George"

Lamb House is a small National Trust property, but has significant historical and literary interest. The guides were very helpful and added to the information available in the rooms. It won't take you long, but I felt that it was a "must-see" in Rye. It could do a bit more merchandising of the books associated with the house, e.g. Mapp and Lucia.

The room Guides really brought the visit alive, they were friendly and helpful. A lovely 30 to 60 minute’s spent in a quiet oasis in the heart of busy Rye

We were staying at the Mermaid Inn Hotel so this was really handy as it is just up the road. The house has an interesting history and is really charming. Sadly the upstairs wasn't open due to lack of volunteers.

The garden was very nice and we found the most beautiful, peaceful courtyard to sit in for a while.

Old house with literary connections in the middle of Rye. Only the ground floor was open due to the Covid-19 restrictions and so the entrance fee of £8 did appear rather steep. However, being a National Trust member, I enjoyed free entry. The most enjoyable part for me was a leisurely ramble around the lovely garden.
