I've been going to Cheltenham for 40 years but am considering giving it a miss next year. Some of the racing this time was uncompetitive and dull. I don't blame Willie Mullins for entering lots of horses - good luck to him. But the level of prize money is far too low for the premier meeting of the year. Why would a British trainer run a horse capable of making 5th or 6th place at Cheltenham where he could win more prize money winning a grade 5 at Taunton? Prices of tickets and drinks have soared over the years but prize money has not. Time for the Jockey Club to play fair and stop ripping the punters off.

Attended Cheltenham on April 18th as a member of a syndicate with a horse running that day, there were 13 of us so I knew from a previous experience we would get an owners and trainers badge but no meal. On arrival we headed to the owners and trainers bar where I asked for a mint tea, only to be told that was a speciality tea and I would have to pay for it, one teabag, I had a glass of water. The dream of any owner is to have a runner at Cheltenham, our horse was later placed and we were invited to the royal box for champagne were we met and chatted with Zara Tindall. It turned out to be a memorable day thanks to the efforts of our horse not because of the shabby attitude of Cheltenham racecourse. The next day we went to Fontwell where there was six of us, we had lovely food and as much mint tea as I wanted.

The course here is so famous, it seems to get busier every year.
Five of us came on the Thursday, but it was still really busy. Drinks were a bit pricey, but that’s expected here.
Great set up with the bookies, just a shame the course have brought in some silly rules.
Still had a fantastic day, will be back next year.

Last year Zero alcohol Guinness was in pint cans at £6-50. Regular Guinness was £7.50. This year Regular Guinness was still £7.50. Zero was £6.75 I thought okay a small increase until I looked to see the glass not full. Upon checking found the cans were 440ml ,A pint is 568ml doing the calculation that worked out at £8.71 a pint. Very disappointing felt ripped off

March Gold Cup 24. Been to a good few race courses & can’t think of any that restrict you for walking around all areas with alcohol. Resulting in, where you buy, your trapped, can’t move inside / outside to see a race with a drink. I also think alcohol is more expensive than other courses, around £12 for a wine with soda. With no selling of alcohol outside on the track side, all bars are very busy. Access in via the muddy field / paths etc could do with a more permanent tarmac pathway. All in all, seen it, done it WOULDN’T go back, probably wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there, whereas I would & do return to Aintree & others.

Another great time at the Festival. Then again, I didn't get overly dressed up only for it to get muddy or alcohol soaked, (it's Cheltenham, not Ascot!), argue with attendants because I wanted to cart my drink around big crowds of people, smuggle fruit in my bag, or, think my experience is more important than others.

Racing totally ruined by unexpected and unnecessary rules around taking drinks out of the area you purchased it in, meaning you either have to drink all drinks very fast or end up watching racing from inside! also an army of officials to supervise you. Never again.

Very expensive for entry, parking, food, etc……
Far too many unnecessary rules and officials trying to stop people from enjoying themselves.
I have been coming to the races at Cheltenham for 25+ years - for many of those , everything seemed to be done to put on a great show and make sure that everybody could enjoy themselves.
Now , everything seems to be aimed at maximising the amount of money that people have to spend , so that they can employ more and more officials to enforce all of the pointless new rules that they introduce every year.

Parking (£20 advance) was a gamble in itself but managed to escape after racing. No signs where to head having parked and being unnecessarily led over temporary foot bridge was not good start for my elderly companions. However, that turned out to be the only negative I can think of.
The Best Mate enclosure has great views of the course. From the top half of the stand you can see the whole course. Nicely set up with bookies in front and food stalls etc behind. Queues weren’t massive, atmosphere and racing top banana.

The festival is all about the horses and nowhere will you find better Jump racing. This is a great day out with the best races, lots of bookies, various food and drink outlets
On the down side - drink service is inconsistent and in some areas drinks come very slowly and queues get very big. Most festivals handle drinks queues better. The biggest let down is the internet. With poor service signal - the course needs a good WiFi system. They offer the jockey clubs free service but the connection is appalling. With so much online betting, and online racing papers and data, this must be improved

where will be the best place to park and what time do you recommend getting to Cheltenham. We are going Friday.

I am sorry I can't help with time - that would be dependent on the race times. Parking is easy, but obviously there is a limited on how many people are visiting. Main parking areas are quite close to the entrance. Search following for details: cheltenham festival parking map

Something warm, other than that I would suggest that anything reasonably smart would do - this is not Ladies Day - this is just a meeting and I guess there is no real dress code applied on a early spring day but the cold wind and good chance of rain will dictate warm and wet gear.

We are getting the Nation Express bus to the festival and I'm just wondering where you get dropped off? Will it be in an enormous field where my shoes will get wrecked? Travelling down for the Gold Cup

If you take a look on the Google satellite images of the area near to the A435 and the B4075 you will see that the area has a fantastic infrastructure for vehicles. I would guess that you will be dropped-off near to the Centaur wher most of the bars and hospitality suites are situated. They are unlike to drop you in the centre of a field because they want your money not your complains. I would contact National Express and ask them where the drop-off and collection points are then you can find them on the site map. See how to get to cheltenham racecourse on Google

Going to the festival for the first time this year and bought a club enclosure ticket. Is there seating available anywhere? have seen the guinness grandstand but its an extra cost.

Club enclosure tickets also give you entry to the Centaur Bar where there is a lot of seating and also where the bands play after the meeting. Gets very busy but lively atmosphere. Hope this helps.

Hi I went to Cheltenham racecourse at the weekend, car parks were full so paid to park in a manor house that backed onto the racecourse car parks. Does anyone know the name of this place? They had a website that I wanted to check out for the 2019 festival and I have forgotten the name of the place!

Sorry don’t know name but I know where you were ...I would suggest you go at least 2 hours before the first and park there again ...I find these spaces are a premium because you will always be delayed in the course official areas ..good luck I say 2 Hours because I always use 3 hours and spend an hour in the car to catch up with the form in my Racing Post ..enjoy
