If you like Arts and crafts movement come here. Fabulous display of the most unique furniture. Cafe good, but small.

This is a very good local museum with lots of interesting artifacts and a small art collection.

The centre-piece however is the excellent collection of Art & Crafts movement items that form the heart of the collection. The collection is well displayed and well catalogued which adds greatly to the enjoyment of the visit.

A 'must-see' for anyone interested in design.

There is a small but very good cafe for a coffee or light meal.

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Wilson Galleries, we appreciate your kind feedback. There will be a new Makers Space installed in the museum from the 16th of March which may interest you. We also have some exciting exhibitions upcoming in March, Sisterhood that starts on march 5th and Colour-ways: Light Works from March 21st, that will host some incredible light installations. We also have some very tasty new Paddy & Scott's coffee with 10p from every cup going towards the No Child Left Behind campaign to help disadvantaged and young children in Cheltenham. Visited with three year old granddaughter. Found layout muddled - on floor two after leaving lift, unsure of which way to go for the children's section, and member of staff seemed unsure too. The "wow" display was not "wow". Seemed to need some TLC, eg the doll's house was a mess, and g'daughter tidied it up.
Having been recently to Sunderland Museum, which is interactive and quite powerful, we left feeling - well not much.

The cafe was fine, but am unsure about the wisdom of having uncovered cakes two inches from the edge of the counter, at hand height. Hygienic?

Having done no homework and exploring Cheltenham for the first time I happened upon this impressive museum. I started on the second floor to see the exhibition of Ernest Grimson’s work - stunningly beautiful furniture and other fine pieces like the fire dogs and toasting forks. I didn’t know that he was a key figure in the Arts & Crafts movement and I was delighted to see more furniture of similar ilk in the permanent exhibition on the same floor. The rest of the 2nd floor was a like a maze that took you from the 19th century back to prehistoric times - extraordinarily impressive for a provincial town. On the way through I came across the Edward Wilson gallery - the Antarctic explorer and doctor who died along with Scott on their way back from the South Pole and who has given his name to the museum. Wilson’s statue in the town was made by Scott’s widow who was an accomplished sculptor - she also made a statue of the captain of the Titanic which stands in a park in Lichfield.
There’s an archive room, study area, learning centre, meeting room, cafe and shop giving it all the ingredients of a truly outstanding museum.

Set back just a couple of roads behind the Promenade, and just round the corner from the main shops in one direction and the Ladies College in the other, this place is a hidden gem
It is worth an hour of anyone's time.
We particularly enjoyed the Fine Art Collection on the first floor, with some fantastic Dutch paintings.
We didn't have time on this occasion to explore further, but we definitely will on our next visit to Cheltenham.

Thank you very much for your feedback, we're delighted that you enjoyed your visit and plan to return in the future! The Dutch and Flemish paintings were the starting point for our Fine Art collection and were a gift to the town from Baron de Ferrieres who was Mayor and MP for Cheltenham. We also have a varied museum collection including Arts & Crafts Movement, local history and the story of the Wilson family especially Edward Adrian Wilson the Antarctic explorer. Keep an eye on our website for future exhibitions and events!

Full of unusual content from Arts & Crafts furniture to the evocative account of Wilson himself on Scott’s fatal expedition.

Quite a bit to see inside, the galleries on the 2nd floor are a bit of a maze but seem to go on forever! Strong on Arts and Crafts, but also some interesting local history.

I’ve always liked Arts and Crafts furniture and hadn’t realised how much of it was made in the Cotswolds. All very well curated and explained.

Also some paintings by important artists such as Vanessa Bell and Paul Nash. Really liked the Guild 51 shop next door as well.

The Arts and Crafts display is fabulous. I have never seen as many examples of the furniture in one place. This museum made a stop in Cheltenham worthwhile. Bravo!
Enhancing the experience were a knowledgeable docent in the gallery and the friendly wait staff in the cafe.
