A real find,we spent a delightful hour on our self guided tour here, the house had homely feel, small but perfectly formed, perhaps a little under dressed,a few more pieces of furniture would give a better idea of what it was like to live there,no running water or indoor toilet !! Which I can only suppose was the norm in those day's.
Book online and you will be met by a very enthusiastic volunteer.

This is the house that Dickens was born in and it's a lovely little museum to visit. It's only small, but the rooms have been decorated and furnished to replicate the living experiences of the time. They sometimes have readings of Dickens' books here too which is always lovely. I've visited a few times and typically go on Dickens' birthday as they hold a wreath-laying event each year. Not much about the museum itself changes but it's worth a visit. It's not open very much now though so check opening times online before you visit. They have a shop too which stocks a great deal of Dickens' works and books/magazines about Dickens as well as postcards and bookmarks etc.

This is a gem. You can actually stand in the room where Dickens was born. Every effort has been made for authenticity here and the effort is worth it. This is a slice of history for all and not just fans of Dickens. Totally recommended.

We walked from our car park near the Mary Rose to the Charles Dickens house, managed to take a wrong turn and wandered via an estate . It was so incongruous to then arrive in this rather pretty street . Although we thought very fitting with the Dickens story .

The house does not have very much that was originally there but has acquired many interesting artefacts including the chaise lounge on which Dickens died . Whilst the bed is not the one on which he was born, to stand in the room in which he entered the world and then step to the next room to see where he died is very moving . There are fabulous photos and in each room this is an informative written guide .

The staff are enthusiastic and extremely well informed, quite happy to give you an overview. . There’s an excellent wee shop in which to indulge your love of the great writer. Very much worth a visit .

The property survives and flourishes within a modern, “interesting” area. Authentic and atmospheric. Well worth a visit. Not sure if the staff are volunteers or paid but their enthusiasm is infectious.

This is a national treasure for people that love books. The hours are weird so you need to be prepared but a most see none the less. See where he was born and they even brought in his deathbed. The gift shop is full of his works both popular and not.

Full of history and another gem in Pompey. Bit small when you look around but I remember as a boy going round here on school trips and always found it interesting

Really enjoyed a visit to this museum today, it’s in a fantastic tiny street which is worth seeing alone. We spoke at length to the 2 men who work in the museum who brought the whole place to life. It’s a small museum but well worth a trip.

Charles Dickens would have been so pleased that his birthplace is so well visited by admirers of his literary triumphs. The place is well preserved, artefacts well displayed and the accompanying information interesting. However you need to be aware that there are at least four flights of stairs but no lift.
