Firstly let me say thank you to Richard who took us on board this ship, I am going to call it the ship with no name as it is simply known as M33. Built in just 7 weeks it was deployed to the Mediterranean in the First World War, I really think it needs to be seen to understand what it was designed for, with two powerful guns it was anchored just offshore to keep an eye on land movement, there is not fancy mess room or decking areas, just small metal compartments each built with a purpose.
This ship situated dry dock in Portsmouth dockyard is smaller than some of the other attractions and you only need an hour to visit this ship.

Great addition to the historic dockyard and was great to be able to climb aboard and explore top to bottom the whole ship. Was able to take as much time as possible to look through the whole ship, was amazing to see how much of the original features have been kept and the period rooms as well of what it use to look like. Was good to see one of the three last remaining ww1 ships in person and get a feel of what it was like for people on board the ship back then.

Amongst the very well known attractions at the superb Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is the much less well known HMS M.33
She is located in a dry dock close to HMS Victory.
Built during the first world war, she is apparently what’s known as a ‘Monitor’.
She was designed to provide fire support to ground forces, so consequently she has a very shallow draught, in order that she could get close to the coast.
This must have made her a very uncomfortable ship to sail on in rough seas.
M.33 was placed on order in March of 1915, and somehow was commissioned into the Royal Navy just three months later.
The hollowed out Royal Navy of today, & its contractors require ten to fifteen years to get a ship into service.
Amazingly, she saw action in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.
Also, she was involved in the civil war in Russia…incredible.
The UK to northern Russia is a vast distance in such a small vessel!
I was struck by how incredibly cramped the living conditions were, but personal comfort counted for little in the King’s Navy of those days.
She is beautifully restored, and has a ‘dazzle’ paint scheme, so she visually looks very striking.
This little warship is a must visit.
Give her an hour of your time.

Great addition to the historic dockyard and so interesting to be able to climb aboard and have a walk around. Was a very hot day so couldn't spend as long as possibly could have on another day. My 4 year old enjoyed getting a sticker for finding the hiding cat!
Brilliant to see one of the three last remaining ww1 ships.

My husband visited the HMS M33 as part of the Ultimate Explorer ticket while I had a second harbour tour as I enjoyed the first one the previous day so much. He was fortunate to have a guide all to himself and was accompanied around the ship. He was fascinated by the ship and all of the detailed and informative information given. Very fortunate to be guided around the ship by such a knowledgeable and interesting guide (whose name we unfortunately don't have). Despite being smaller than the other 3 ships it was just as an enjoyable experience

If you go to HM Royal Naval Dockyard, be prepared to be "dazzled" by HMS M33, and that was the intention of the strikingly vivid camouflage on this historic WW1 ship. Considerably smaller than we anticipated HMS M33, was in an historic dry dock, and a very worthwhile ldiversion from the hi tech treatment and presentation of the nearby "Mary Rose". Without so many special effects this special ship has a charming simplicity. The crew / guides were teriffic, and very helpful.

Small ship designed to bombard beaches in 14 18. Sole survivor of the Battle of the Dardanelles. Impressive to know that there were 60 crew members and that they were gone for 3 years.
Quick visit.

We arrived at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyards and visited the museum - it was a truely fascinating day seeing these huge ships from a bygone time.
On the HMS warrior we encounter very friendly and informative people in costume from that time - one young midshipman Henry Arthur Keith Murray was especially informative on his life on board this ship in the 1800 hundreds - reenacting this young man that was actually on the ship all those years ago.
The same went for Edward Tamlin - a stoker from the ship - these encounters made the visit to this amazing old vessel so enjoyable .
