This is a small but interesting NT site. The water wheel is currently out of action but there is plenty of information about milling. Donations are suggested as there is no formal charge to enter. The cafe seems popular.

This ancient mill is a NT property and around 1,000 years old; incredible!. Unusually for the NT entry is free although donations towards the upkeep are obviously most welcome. The mill building has been well restored and is surprisingly light and airy at the ground floor with information boards and helpful volunteers. Among the exhibits is a live CCTV feed of the otters that inhabit the River Itchen here.
The mill wheel is one level down and is about to be restored after a successful fund-raising reaching over £100,000. Fascinating to see labels on many worn parts showing the cost of restoration for each. Standing on a grid bridge over the mill-race it is easy to see the huge power of the water racing underneath.
Once the mechanism is restored the plan is to start milling flour again. Even if only in small demonstration batches that will add hugely to the attraction! Hopefully some will be for sale for bread-making at home.
There is a small garden between the two mill race chanels just upstream of the mill; a restful spot with some seating.
Back on the ground floor there is a cafe; we didn't try as we had just had lunch at a local restuarant but next time we would use. It offered the usual NT menu items.
The ground floor also had a second-hand book shop with a fair selection and, as always at attractive NT prices. We bought two hardbacks, £33 when new, for £5, both in very good condition.
Well worth a short visit.

It’s a splendid heritage treasure from the city’s distant past. Mentioned in the 1086 Domesday as milling corn, other references to it predate this by more than 150 years.
It finished its milling work in 1910 and was used as a laundry during WW I. After some years of decay and under demolition threat, all changed for the better in the late 1920s when it was gifted to the National Trust.
A major restoration project completed in 2004, resulting in the tremendous attraction to be enjoyed today.

Popped in for a coffee and a danish, mid morning on a Saturday. Coffees hot and flavourful, danishes soft and fresh. All cakes looked fab and spoilt for choice.
Then went round the mill and garden. Interesting with water rushing underneath the mill . Worth a visit if you are in Winchester before a walk along the river.

Sorry to say we had two really bad meals here. This is the first time this has happened, as before it's been really good. Wonder if chef has changed, or national trust have cut down funding? Pricing also increased, so will not revisit. Staff are lovely, and obliging.

Apparently the watermill is still used to grind flour, but for some reason the wheel was stopped when I visited. The facility is managed by the National Trust, but even non-members can visit for free. There is also a cafe and shop on-site.

Stands right on the main street over the river that pours noisily under a bridge. A WORKING mill - though currently trying to replace some of its ancient mechanism. There is a small garden at the back between the mill races. I arrived very late and was made so welcome. All my questions answered and a quick dive round and a chat to three charming French ladies having coffee. Like a dip into medieval Winchester at the heart of the modern city!

Visited café for a quick drink with elderly friend who was in a wheelchair. There is a ramp at entrance with a few steps up to the café area. My friend managed fine with the handrail and staff were very accommodating, allowing us to leave the wheelchair in the shop. My friend requested a small, weak latte which was no problem at all. My cappuccino was delicious. It’s a beautiful listed building.

Unbeknown to us, the mill wasn't operating as the waterwheel and associated items have been removed and awaiting renovation.
There is a campaign at the moment to raise sufficient funds to allow the renovation to take place.

A free visit and great for a rainy day and not a rainy day. Go downstairs for the waterwheel house, but only the gearing remains. Nice cafe and bookshop with video of Mills history and general past. Very enjoyable.

Hi Louise,
Winchester City Mill is suitable for all ages with interactive hands-on activities as well as themed trails. We also provide milling demonstrations from 11am-4pm every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
There is no parking on site but many nearby within the city center. We recommend using the local park and ride during busy times.
