It’s a fabulous monument, created as a Holy Cross and originating in the mid 1300s. Religious figures feature strongly throughout its gorgeous makeup.
It got its common name from both its design and location.
With the latter in the commercial area of High Street numerous traders would have used the convenient array of octagonal steps at its base to display their goods. Butter and other dairy goods would have being the prime foods on offer.

This is a beautiful and historic monument that is located on the high street. It has been renovated over the years. Unfortunately it is not very prominently located so can be easily missed.

Questo monumento sorge nella High Street in un punto neanche centrale, un po' discosto sul lato destro scendendo, quasi attaccato alle botteghe che si susseguono lungo la via. Anticamente in questo punto della via si vendeva il burro.

This is a nice and well kept but cross and sits in a prominent position on High Street.
It has fine detail on all sides and is a beautiful example of craftsmanship.

Historic 15th Century Market cross, somewhat lost amongst the place glass fronted shops on Winchester High Street. Which is a planning issue rather than any refection of this wonderfully carved stone monument, and there are details / information boards close by. Is Winchester council a bit embarrassed by this piece of history.

It's just a monument, but it's interesting looking and worth a look. Obviously costs no money and takes little time to see, so why not?

Walking up Winchesters high street we came across the High Cross, also known as the Butter Cross, which dates back to the 14th century and is thought to be a gift from the Bishop of Winchester. This monument with octagonal steps and many pinnacles has the faces of twelve figures carved upon it, starting with the Blessed Virgin and a plethora of saints, Bartholomew, Peter, Swithun, John, Lawrence, Maurice, and Thomas. Later figures were added were those of William of Wykeham, Lawrence de Anne, King Alfred, and St John the Evangelist.
It is located next to a small alleyway that leads past the site of King William the Conquerors palace, and St Lawrence’s church on the opposite side.
Its stone-stepped plinth with five octagonal steps has been the center of the area’s commercial world, with traders selling their butter, cheese, eggs, milk since time immemorial.
Over the centuries King Henry VIII while pulling the plug on the roman catholic church and Oliver Cromwell’s Civil War, both destroyed large parts of the city, but somehow the Butter Cross survived. In 1865 the Victorian architect, Gilbert Scott, re-enforced the monument with iron rods in 1865.
TIP: There is a great tea shop with views of the monument from its second floor right behind it.

Winchester's Buttercross, located in the High Street, dates back to the 15th century, and features 12 statues of the Virgin Mary, other saints and various historical figures. In 1770, Thomas Dummer purchased the Buttercross from the Corporation of Winchester, intending to have it re-erected at Cranbury Park, near Otterbourne. When his workmen arrived to dismantle the cross, they were prevented from doing so by the people of the city, who "organised a small riot",[27] and they were forced to abandon their task. The agreement with the city was cancelled. The Buttercross itself was restored by George Gilbert Scott in 1865 and holds Scheduled Ancient Monument status. The steps of the Buttercross often attract buskers, protesters and ponderers.
