Sorry but this is not worth the money you pay to visit. The whole place needs bring into 2023 as it felt and looks like it is stuck in the 1990’s. There is such potential to make this place more interactive. A bucket with fact finding information and some dressing up cloths is not good when you compare this to most modern museums in the country and that are free to access. The information presented is great but it’s too much for children to engage with. Very disappointing I wouldn’t waste your money.

Nous avons découvert ce musée lors de notre séjour dans la région de bradford. Musée très intéressant et instructif, les mosaïques sont splendides. Vraiment très riches en objets de toute sorte. Le parc est immense aussi à faire. Très bonne sortie

A small but well-presented museum, focusing on the lives & times of the people who comprised the Roman Conquest of Britain. Their occupation lasted from AD 43 to AD 410, and the Verulamium Museum (named after the Roman town that was established southwest of what is now the English town of St Albans, Hertfordshire) offers insights into how those people lived & worked & built a community. The artifacts collected & displayed are varied & extensive, from everyday usage items to coins to large mosaic decorations to the remains of Roman citizens exhumed with their lead coffins. Surrounding those items are descriptions & depictions of the settlement & development of a Roman society in the area, with informative signage & mixed media displays to engage visitors of all ages. The facilities are well maintained, the staff is friendly, and the adjacent car park is very handy to visit the Museum as well as other sites around St Albans.
Our adult party members purchased combined entry tickets for the Verulamium Museum and the nearby Roman Theatre (a walk up the hill on St Michael's Street & across the A4147). The old Theatre site is more suited & presented to host the modern entertainment events scheduled there than to learning more about Roman Britain history. So we would recommend focusing your time & money on the Museum alone, then moving on to explore the rest of what St Albans town has to offer.

What a fabulous experience! I couldn’t believe the frescos and mosaics that had been discovered in the 1930’s The staff were more than happy to chat and gave us more of an insight to their treasures! Definitely worth a visit!

This is a wonderful museum. Rich in information. I could have spent a whole day absorbing interesting facts about Roman life. I loved the models who helped bring the period to life. And what beautiful mosaics. I also went to see the Roman theatre and would love to return in summer for one of their outdoor plays.
I did have great difficulty finding the museum as I walked down from the cathedral and across the park. The only signs referred to a Green Way and there was nothing at all to point you to the museum. Sadly I experienced this difficulty in other places in St Albans. It is a city brimming with interesting architecture and sites but without signage it’s easy to miss them. I didn’t manage to find a satisfactory town map either!

A super Museum. Took eight-year-old there as she is studying Romans at school this term and I thought this would be a good introduction. She loved making her own mosaic and writing on the wax tablet with a stylus. Convenient parking outside the next one amazing park

Lots of artefacts here and I'd say essential if you want to understand more about the Romans who made this place their home. I found the most stunning exhibits to be the mosaics, excavated from sites nearby and put back together here in the museum to stunning effect. The every day objects are very interesting too, from glassware, to jewellery and various tools. Some of these are displayed in room settings, others in glass cases.
The entrance fee is very reasonable - with a discount too if you're over 60. I didn't have to prove it but then what woman would happily add on years! We bought tickets which also included entrance to the remains of the Roman amphitheatre over the road. It was sunny and windy when we went, but I'm glad we saw it. Don't expect too much as you do have to use a bit of imagination as there's not that much left. There would originally have been wooden, banked seats around the outside and other things like a triumphal arch behind the stage.

For a little, reasonably priced museum, this museum is very good. There is a rich collection of artefacts and plenty of information. Don't plan to spend the day here though, as the museum can probably be covered in 30-60 minutes.

Where to take our grandaughters? - we decided on this museum and we are so glad we did. We parked in Westminster Lodge, so we had a good walk to burn up some energy and then enjoyed the museum. Their staff were very friendly, and helpful. The lady who talked to the girls about the artifacts was very patient and did an excellent job of helping to consolidate what they had seen and learnt. Thank you. They enjoyed the craft work and following the trail. Making mosaics was great fun two. It was easy to follow and even though it did become busier it wasn't that crowded. We shall definitely take them back again. It was clean and the exhibits well cared for and presented. Showed all about life in Roman times with many artefacts to look at.

Lovely museum highlighting Roman history in the town. On the edge of the enormous Verulamium park. Worth a look in if you like history.

Does it have good access for wheelchair users
St_Albans_Museums
St. Albans, UK
Verulamium Museum is wheelchair-accessible - the entrance, shop and galleries are all on one level and there is a lift to reach the accessible WC in the basement.
There is a sloped path from the NCP car park to the entrance, the glass doors are quite heavy to open but staff can assist.
