I visited St. Michael's Church in St Alban's in November last year and I was pleasantly surprised by this site. St. Michael's was first established roughly 1000 years ago and much remains of the original Anglo-Saxon structure. From the 11th to the 15th centuries there were a number of additions to the church, including the side aisles, the Lady Chapel, and the timber roof. A tower was added in the 19th century and the nave was also expanded. The church's most famous parishioner was Francis Bacon, an English statesman and philosopher who was a pivotal figure in the establishment of the modern scientific method. Bacon was buried at St. Michael's and the monument dedicated to him was erected just a few years after his death. If you're in St Alban's, I recommend you set aside half an hour or so to explore this beautiful site.

This medieval church is open for visitors throughout the week. Bang in the middle of Roman Verulamium it may be the oldest site of known Christian activity in the British Isles, on the spot where St Alban was tried for being a Christian. Home to a vibrant all age congregation and located in a beautiful setting.

St Michael's Church is impressive in its own right, being a lovely church, with interesting features inside like the Doom screen panel and some lovely stained glass.
It also stands on the site of the old Roman Basilica, so is likely the place where Alban was tried and sentenced to death. Hard to believe when walking around this bright and lovely church and its peaceful grounds.

This is an amazing place.
It is a wonderfully historic build church that is said to sit on if not near the site where Britain's first Saint, Alban went to trial.
A perfect visit for the history buff and for those who appreciate architecture and beauty.
The church has a very friendly reverend Kennett that makes anyone who visits feel relaxed and welcomed.
It's a fantastic place to come and meditate and pray and escape the craziness of the world outside. A little sanctuary.
Would 100% recommend!

Much of the building is late 10th or early 11th century, making it the most significant surviving Anglo-Saxon building in the county. The building includes much Roman material salvaged from the surrounding ruins of Verulamium, including much Roman brick which is easily spotted. Perhaps St Michael's most significant feature is the monument to Francis Bacon, siting in an unusual life sized pose. Conveniently the church sits plum in the middle of two other nearby attractions only yards away;- the Museum and ancient roman ruins of Verulamium.

This is an old church which dates back to before the Norman conquest. Many of the bricks are from Roman times. Parts of the church have been added over the centuries. It is still an active parish. When visited a volunteer gave an overview of the church.

The building is set in a quiet area adjacent to the Ancient Roman City of Verulamium.
It's a beautiful building complete with a tower housing a blue clock. Not sure how old the place is, but its open to all and one can get a sense of its age when inside.
A lovely medieval building.
