Beautiful river and nature walk along the River Stour in Canterbury. No matter what season it is, this nature reserve always have something to offer. This starts at Canterbury Westgate Gardens and you can walk to Chartham village, it’s around 3.5 miles long and approximately takes 75 mins to walk at a leisurely pace.

Recommend catching the sunset in the spring months at the view point, it’s worth staying for to watch.

Walking or cycling on the Great Stour Way, passing by beautiful villages, and watching the swans and ducks of the river, or dogs bathing in it, is a truly relaxing and beautiful experience. Note that if you are visiting Canterbury, you can rent bikes for the day from Kent Cycle hire. And it is also a great walk if you prefer walking.

My daily stroll along The Great Stour Way starts from Westgate Gardens in Canterbury to Chartham and back. It is always a pleasure to spend time in nature and I specially love and enjoy this area of Kent

Great walk from Canterbury. Took about an hour, we stopped at the Artichoke for a pub lunch and drink and got the train back which runs regularly (one stop). Dog friendly walk, beware some parts have sheep in fields. Some parts were wet and boggy but mostly a dry pathway which makes it easy to follow.

We were staying in Canterbury so decided on a short (3 mile) walk along to the village of Chartham and back again. Footpath follows the river pretty much all the way, so there's a chance to spot dragonflies, ducks and maybe the odd kingfisher. Flat, paved for a lot of the way and easy walking so it's also very good for cyclists (there are a lot, so be aware if walking!) Pleasant way to spend some time. We also met a group of 4 who were walking the whole route from start to the sea, so there are lots of sections to explore if you have time or plan it.

This is an excellent route for a walk or cycle ride alongside the River Stour and passes adjacent to the Hambrook Marshes. Although the route meanders between Canterbury & Wye, we've only ever walked or cycled the route between Canterbury & Chartham (The Artichoke pub is ideally situated in Chartham just slightly off the route !!). In Canterbury, the route can be joined at Westgate Gardens or Toddler's Cove. It is a flat route through to Chartham (or in reverse). Hambrook Marshes boast a large variety of flora & fauna. It all adds up to a pleasant & idyllic walk/cycle ride.

This is a delightful cycle ride (or walk) and accessible to most ages and abilities. It takes you through lovely water-meadows and alongside the Stour river. Start either at Westgate Gardens (by Cafe Des Amis) and head south, or at "Toddler's Cove" in St Dunstans. Goes as far as Chartham (pretty village green & church + pub and shop) or you can continue on a lovely ride along an old bridleway to Wye (mostly off road) if you want to make a day of it.

This is a near-perfect track for a family walk or cycle (or scoot, or ...). Since it runs alongside the gently flowing river the well-maintained pathway is almost flat. Try walking from Canterbury to Chartham for a pub lunch and either walking off a few calories on the way back or hopping on a train back to Canterbury West station.
