A beautiful day for a beautiful walk. We walked through to Chartham, found the charming watering hole, The Artichoke. Had a rest and some food and a little drink. We were going to return by train but walked the return too. A very popular, well used path. Suitable for walkers, cyclists and possibly wheelchairs. The river is stunning so clear, with plenty of wildlife. Very enjoyable.

On a trip wo Sussex and Kent we stayed a couple of nights in Canterbury. Our hotel was a little way out of down and we walked into the city on several occasions but this morning we decided to take a more adventurous walk around these pleasant city-centre gardens and paths.

We walked south along the Great Stour riverside using ‘The Great Stour Way’ (a well kept path), as far as the A2 road bridge. We decided that this was far-enough, as there was a continuous stream of cyclists using what was becoming a quite narrow path and we were constantly looking-over our shoulders to be aware, when they approached.

So, we then walked back north towards the Westgate Tower. We would have then headed for the city, but the that pathway under the A290 (Rheims Way) was closed.

The area we walked though contains parkland, being used today by school parties, were most pleasant (if not a tad noisy on occasions). A subway we walked through was decorated by a mural depicting local historical events.

The river was busy with punts for hire, with passengers enjoying the peace and the lovely views. It was a shame we couldn’t find the time to ‘take a punt’ but we had loads to see and little time in which to fit it all in.

This lovely walk goes right through Canterbury. We walked out to Chartham and back through marshes and nice countryside. Lots of other destinations, all well signposted.

This is a lovely trail about 3 miles long out of Canterbury. It is popular with walkers, cyclists, runners. It is a very pleasant route with lots of birds.

Signage is good although not quite complete - so stay alert. It'd be an easy bike ride but to walk it after rain parts are muddy or flooded. The area clearly floods quite significantly at times.

Beautiful river and nature walk along the River Stour in Canterbury. No matter what season it is, this nature reserve always have something to offer. This starts at Canterbury Westgate Gardens and you can walk to Chartham village, it’s around 3.5 miles long and approximately takes 75 mins to walk at a leisurely pace.

Recommend catching the sunset in the spring months at the view point, it’s worth staying for to watch.

Walking or cycling on the Great Stour Way, passing by beautiful villages, and watching the swans and ducks of the river, or dogs bathing in it, is a truly relaxing and beautiful experience. Note that if you are visiting Canterbury, you can rent bikes for the day from Kent Cycle hire. And it is also a great walk if you prefer walking.

My daily stroll along The Great Stour Way starts from Westgate Gardens in Canterbury to Chartham and back. It is always a pleasure to spend time in nature and I specially love and enjoy this area of Kent

Great walk from Canterbury. Took about an hour, we stopped at the Artichoke for a pub lunch and drink and got the train back which runs regularly (one stop). Dog friendly walk, beware some parts have sheep in fields. Some parts were wet and boggy but mostly a dry pathway which makes it easy to follow.

We were staying in Canterbury so decided on a short (3 mile) walk along to the village of Chartham and back again. Footpath follows the river pretty much all the way, so there's a chance to spot dragonflies, ducks and maybe the odd kingfisher. Flat, paved for a lot of the way and easy walking so it's also very good for cyclists (there are a lot, so be aware if walking!) Pleasant way to spend some time. We also met a group of 4 who were walking the whole route from start to the sea, so there are lots of sections to explore if you have time or plan it.
