Wow! I spent almost 2 whole days visiting. The ticket is good for an entire year. I especially loved the Lifeboat Collection, the 1878 British Naval ship, the WW2 destroyer, the Victoria ship model that was made by a film studio, and the Ropery. I was told rope demonstrations are not held on weekends. I was told the steam train only runs once a month. I took a local bus from Chatham Railroad Station, found right behind the station, and thankfully another passenger & Dockyard visitor on the bus told me where to exit the bus & where to walk to get into the Dockyard. I enjoyed lunch in the Mess Deck. The fish & chips were especially good.

There is a lot to see and the staff are friendly. You could stay all day there and it's very relaxed. The food options away from the main entrance is pretty poor and expensive. I don't think I've ever seen a sadder excuse for a sandwich before. Bring your own food and drink especially if you have young kids.

Great place to visit. You can spend all day there ans still not see it all.
One drawback is the food.
Orderd fish and chips in the main restraunt but it was awful. The fish was so over cooked when it came it was bent over and was realy hard to straighten it out. The fish was so over cooked the batter was so crispy you had a job to cut through it and on top of that the peas where under cooked. We had a taxi booked and had to try to eat what we could it but that was impossible so we just had the chips. The dinner was so late arriving otherwise we would have sent it back.
Will go to the museum again but next time take our own food.

We did the excellent Call The Midwife tour. Dawn was a personable, informative and fun tour guide. We learned loads about the history of the dockyards and the magic of TV making with lots of informative anecdotes. We finished with a walk around the well preserved HMS Cavalier. The museum is vast and well worth a return visit to see and experience everything.

Wow, what a great place for a day out. I totally agree with all the reviews, so much to see and do. Everything is so clean and well organized, all the staff are friendly and helpful. I can't wait to take my grandchildren.

Had a great day out here combined with the Call The Midwife tour. We really enjoyed the Lifeboat exhibition and were impressed by the accessibility for all. The information boards and interactive digital displays were really instructive too. We enjoyed wandering round the HMS Cavalier and poking around the inner cabins. A certain amount of mobility is an advantage to getting up and down the stairs though you can see a fair bit on one level. The sloop HMS Gannet was a bit less interesting in that the lower deck was closed off so there wasn’t much to see. We didn’t fancy the Ocelot sub due to claustrophobia and a certain amount of agility was needed but imagine it would be great if that’s your interest. We ran out of time for the heart of oak experience but all the other exhibits in the way of the model ships and interactive points were brilliant. The ropery is certainly worth a visit too. The Call The Midwife tour was good - be prepared you will get a lot of “steps” in! The guide mainly took us to various filming points of past and future pending series reminding you of what characters did what and where. A bit of historical background thrown in and behind the scenes secrets. The highlight for us was the exhibition of the film sets. You have about 15 mins to wander round the old sweet shop and Violets haberdashery, see Trixie and Jenny’s wedding dresses, medical implements etc. And lots of pics of the cast filming. The restaurant and cafe on site were ok but a bit limited in offer - especially the latter but there’s so much to see you haven’t got time to sit around eating!!! Good play areas for little ones to let off steam. All in all a great day out for all the family. Just be prepared for lots of walking!!

We came for the Call the Midwife tour (which was good) so the Historic Dockyard was a bonus. What a great day we had getting onboard the sun Ocelot, HMS Cavalier, the Ropery and the other exhibitions. The staff are all very engaging and informative, the place is spotless and we enjoyed it all.

Ex service man returning to see what has happened to the place since the RN departed.
What a fantastic attraction this is for all walks of life, something for everyone. A lot of thought and expertise has been invested in a once historical busy thriving work place. Absolutely covers all aspects and history over the full life of this shipyard. You cannot take it all in with one visit. We had two days there and need to go back. There is so much to see and absorb. The people, staff and volunteers are all so friendly and knowledgeable. One reason we never saw everything, the staff were so passionate in what they were doing, we found it difficult to move on. Loved it all, we will be back for sure.

I came here with my dad on a whim, thinking we might spend a few hours and then move on to somewhere else. Surprisingly, we ended up spending the entire day here!
The staff here is very friendly and enthusiastic. They even somehow managed to make the history of ropery fascinating. (Seriously, don't skip the ropery limited tour like we almost did. It may sound dull, but it was genuinely one of our highlights).
Of course, I highly recommend the submarine (unless you're claustrophobic or on the larger side of life). Some of the hatches you must squeeze through also might be challenging if you have mobility issues.
There are also numerous vehicles from the Royal Engineers Museum, which was a pleasant surprise. When you combine that with the destroyer, soop, lifeboats, and your more standard museum galleries, you can really spend a significant amount of time here.
The only thing we didn't particularly enjoy was the interactive oak/timber shipbuilding walkthrough. It was scheduled to last half an hour, but we got bored 10 minutes through and left. However, that's just a matter of personal taste. It wasn't poorly executed.

I should start this review by saying that I have had a huge passion for this site since I first visited in 2000. Today was my second visit with my son (3) the first visit being for Mission Christmas last year. Today though we wanted to specifically visit the submarine. Our son has a fascination with the song Yellow Submarine & for his birthday we thought we’d take him to see a real one. He was very nervous approaching the sub & had already said he didn’t want to go on it. We finally convinced him to walk under it though & he enjoyed that. Then we came across John who is one of the tour guides for Ocelot. He took the time to talk to our son about the submarine, pointing out key parts. He then suggested we go on the bridge, which our son agreed to. With gentle reassurance from John we managed to get him to the entrance. Whilst we didn’t go on it today, we know that our little boy will be so much more comfortable on our next visit & this is down to John. He’s a fantastic example of how treating visitors as individuals goes such a long way.

How accessible is the tour for people with mobility issues.

I would say pretty accessible. There are some uneven steps and access to the ships would be tricky but some displays etc are inside and the lifeboat exhibition has ramp access.

Do we still have to pre-book our tickets if we are using a yearly pass to revisit the Dockyard, or just turn up on our chosen day?
