Difficult to get to without a car, but a great day out if you do have one. Gives a good idea of earlier times. A shame there's not more reference to its roots as a POW camp, though, as that would be really interesting.

Great place steeped in History from the 1st time the fort was built through the Neapolitan battles right through to ww1 and then WW2 and how it became heavily involved and it's now home to our only surviving Blackburn Beverley air transporter plane. If like me you enjoy history then it's a must to go and keep the history alive

When my husband and I go to a museum, we're already on-side. We really wanted this to be good. Alas... This is a fascinating site and should have been a good museum on local history. But, my goodness, where to start about this place.

Firstly, as most reviews mention, it's no exaggeration to say that this place is in urgent need of cleaning and repair. It can't be easy maintaining a place like a fort as they are susceptible to damp. However, nearly everything in there was covered in a veneer of mould and there was even a sizeable mushroom growing out of one of the display panels. The excuse given for the state of the place was that it was a listed building and therefore they can't make any alterations. This seems like an extremely lame excuse. I have seen listed structures managed by voluntary organisations (Coalhouse Fort in Essex, for example), which have limited budgets, treated with far more care and respect that this place.

Secondly, the "curators" didn't seem to be bothered about the actual history of the place itself. There was a lot of general history and context, but not about the actual site itself. As we went further around the site, the exhibits got more and more bizarre. There was a room on witchcraft and information on Matthew Hopkins, who has nothing to do with Yorkshire (he was from Essex!) By the end, it was obvious they really couldn't be arsed and were just chucking in anything (a history of the fire service, anyone? How about a creepy mannequin of Hitler? Because obviously, he has lots to do with Fort Paull!) It didn't seem to occur to the people running this place to even look at how other organisations run and curate museums. Or even to employ a local historian to find out about the place and research its history.

Thirdly, related to the above point, the actual history itself consisted of badly edited essays that seemed to be copied and pasted from somewhere and hadn't been fact-checked. A lot of the dates were just wrong, and, in our opinion, was written in a very jingoistic tone. However, some of it was entertaining and there were some absolutely cracking lines. For example, did you know that Florence Nightingale (whatever she had to do with Fort Paull!) was good-looking yet she still couldn't get a husband? Or have you noticed that Germans are the first to get on sun loungers on holiday. Apparently, this is a hangover from the fact that they didn't get themselves an empire until after the rest of Europe.

Finally, this is not a child-friendly museum. The mannequins and loop sound-effects are the stuff of nightmares. Is there even any need for the mannequins?! And you have to pay £6.50 adult fee for the privilege of entering. Actually, my husband and I didn't resent paying the entrance fee because we had so much to talk about afterwards and we were wetting ourselves with laughter at the sheer dreadfulness of the place.

Joking aside, it's such a shame that such an important historical structure is being taken care of by cowboys, who are charging quite an exorbitant entrance fee, even though they are allowing the place to fall into decay and don't seem to give a toss about the history of this fascinating place.

This place should be put into custody of a professional organisation, such as English Heritage or even Hull City Council, as a matter of urgency - before it’s lost forever.

Went there today 08/10/2019. went to see what was going on and was met by a very grumpy male. He disapeared so I went for a walk round the perimiter then he appeared again and rabbited on it was only open for two more weeks then he could have the winter off.. Then slagged social media off before telling me he does not like talking to people cos they are all Bas***ds. So I left never to return.

well the first thing i want to point out is the woman on the desk she is very rude and she really doesnt like kids and was constantly having a go at my 16 and 9 year old,,,honestly they couldnt breathe without her saying something and she also proceeded to cough all over us without covering her mouth. There are some interesting things there but it really is run down. the toilets are terrible. not worth the amount you have to pay. really wouldnt recommend.

Well this place is a joke not just for events but just as a museum. £6.50 per adult and looks like none of the money they take goes towards the museum. Looks like it has never been cleaned ever. Cobwebs, leaves, dead plants and weeds everywhere. Exhibits are a disgrace with some areas in darkness. Also visited this museum as advertised a vintage and thoroughbred car event. Yet again very disappointing as not many cars were there about 15. Nothing against the people who own the cars but this was a very poor event put on by the museum. Even some of the pitches where cars were meant to be were empty. Then as one car arrived, two left! Now come on if people with cars are going to attend they should be told they have to stay there until the event finishes (unless they need to leave for family or emergency reasons). Was in there less than an hour and that was only because I was waiting to see if any more cars turned up. Feel very cheated and will not be going back. It needs to be closed down and a lot of work done to the place before re-opening!

Interesting place to visit. Some of exhibits were closed due to the rains the week before. Need to be mindful of steps quite a lot of exhibits underground or up some steps so not good if infirm. All in all pleasant couple of hours.

Great little place, never been before but worth a visit, only knew about it as friends live near by. YOU need to advertise it!

We visited this interesting place a few years ago and wanted to return with our 2 young grandsons. It is much as we remembered it - very interesting, authentic and well worth a visit especially with children as there is lots of open space and a great adventure playground for them to let off steam. I read some of the previous reviews and was sad to see some people found it run down or disappointing. I think they are rather missing the point. It is a listed building so updating it or renovating it is not allowed. Some parts are very old and it is to expected that they will show their great age. It is great value for money including the cafe and run by lovely, friendly people. It is real history and not a "visitor experience" with flashy lights of electronic gadgets. If people advise others not to go it will only deteriorate more which would be a great shame. It needs support, not criticism.
