Very good volunteer-run museum of wartime Hull, hundreds of exhibits and documents detailing impact of 2 world wars on the city. Helpful volunteers on hand to answer questions, as well as a well stocked shop. We only had limited time to visit unfortunately but will be back on our next visit

You are so right 'yaarge56' - it is all down to the dedication and hard work of a 100% voluntary team of true enthusiasts.

Access is from inside the shop with the same name and is free. It's small but very interesting, volunteers on hand to explain and demonstrate exhibits. Gives a real insight into life of the troops in the world wars and the amount of bombing Hull received.

A really interesting and informative little place. Certainly deserving of more. Really knowledgeable staff in the place who will help customers with any query. Lots of memorabilia to view. Small back-room which they change intermittently into trenches, bunkers, etc. Always interesting, and a great talking point with kids. Plenty of books and such that you can buy to support them.

Hi Kirsty (B1987Hull), Being the curious type, I find myself wondering if there is a 'B1987' highway somewhere in the UK and where it runs from and too. The stuff that goes through my mind, I am regularly told, worries people. Thank you so much for your review which the volunteer will love to see; they are everything - it is their passion that makes The Hull People's Memorial Museum what it is. Unfortunately, COVID has hit us as it has everyone so our current offering has been pared-back from what it could be. Our first-floor displays, for example, have had to be closed to the public due to C-19 safety considerations. Let's hope that everyone gets through the current round of the pandemic safely and we can all get back to some kind of normal as soon as possible.

An absolute gem of a museum filled fascinating artefacts from both world wars. The wartime montage displays are especially interesting and help educate younger generations of the horrors of War.
All staff so friendly and knowledgeable. My particular thanks to Brian who gave me a personalised tour and was most insightful and Chris on the till who very kindly laminated a copy of "On the North East Coast of England". Entrance to this museum is free and there appeared no pressure for donations. I would urge anyone who visits to make a purchase from the shop or to drop whatever loose change they may have. Museums like these are so precious to keep alive the memory of those that came before us and who sacrificed so much for better tomorrows!

A shout out to to cheeky Alan who was working behind the scenes.

Who me? ... Cheeky? ... Well, okay then, I'll give you that, but what is life without a little cheek to latch on to from time to time? Thanks for a great review which I will make sure that Brian, in particular, gets to see. Chris (my wife) does have her uses too! We like to keep admission free, and are helped in that by a very special arrangement we have with Trinity House Charity. As you say though, it is the shop and donations that keep us going. To that end, we will soon be launching a new online shop, so please keep your eyes peeled for that one. Best wishes to you and yours, Alan B.

Thank you, Richard, we are always very pleased to hear from our visitors - especially when they are praising the volunteers, which we all are. Chris, our buyer and treasurer, spends endless hours looking for something a little different and is particularly keen on promoting the smaller local businesses and authors. The museum, by choice, is mostly constructed using scrap wood and pallets, and the assorted salvage discovered by our resident team of 'skip-dippers'. This has worked well as it offers so much opportunity to serve a little extra atmosphere than it would ever be possible to achieve using fresh wood from somewhere like B&Q (who saved all of their scrap pallets for us at their Hessle store). Ultimately, green wood, from the shops, is much less green, environmentally, than our collection of salvaged scrap. Win-win. Thanks again for your feedback. Best wishes,

I found this completely by chance as from the outside it just looks like a shop. It is a wonderful find and a fascinating small museum commemorating the people of Hull who fought in both World Wars. This is very much a hands on museum and the two volunteer staff were so enthusiastic and particularly talking to children about weapons and letting them handle the different guns.

Artefacts have been generously donated by the people of Hull and there is everything from medals and hat badges to pre decimal coinage and examples of goods that might have been on sale at the time. (Those of a ‘certain age’ will recognise many of them!) There is a reconstructiuon of an ARP post, an example of a field hospital and conditions in the trenches. I was particularly intrigued by the WW1 listening device used by the Tunnelling Corps of the Royal Engineers.

The museum is free but they do ask for contributions if you have enjoyed it. It is definitely worth visiting and complements the other museums in Hull.

Hi there EESW1, I did post a reply to your feedback a while ago, but for the first time ever it seems to have failed somewhere along the lines. I wanted to say how pleased we all are to have seen your very thorough and generous feedback. As I always like to point out, everyone here is a volunteer and I believe that is what makes us such a success with our visitors; we are here because we want to be here and have a real passion for our interests. The listening device is quite a surprisingly basic piece of kit, but it worked. Today we would (and do) use all kinds of electronic gadgetry to listen for enemy activity, including ground vibration sensors which can pick up a tunneling mole well over a mile away. Unfortunately, once you run out of batteries ... Thank you once more for a really thorough 'report' and those 5-stars you have awarded us. Best wishes,
