Well Dave D and Lancashire wanderer - the reason we loved this walk is usually because we can avoid people like you but sadly not! I don’t know who in the world expects a cafe and toilets on a mountain but obviously you do exist.
Anyway great walk. We took the route from swirls car park - but don’t park there, there’s a lay-by 100m before it on the left side (if the lakes on your right) - from parking, to the top of helvellyn and back took us 4h15 including stops and lunch at the top (brought our own food as there was no cafe!!!).
About 70% uphill ascent then levels out more towards the top. Nice views over thirlmere all the way up and great views from the top.

Helvellyn? More like Hellvellyn if you ask me. Disappointed to find there's no train to the top like there is on Snowden, so we ended up having to walk all the way to the summit. Snowden's got a café which sells a selection of hot and cold drinks and handheld snacks. No such luxury on Hellvellyn.
Come on Hellvelyn, get your act together.
If I could give it no points then I would.

We went and it was half covered in snow. As we were getting to the bit where it starts to go up sharply, we saw hikers coming down in polar gear and ice pick boots. It was very difficult as it got to the summit, so we decided to turn back and come back in the summer, or more prepared in the winter. Beautiful views, but beware of parking. It requires coins and doesn't accept cards or any other form of payment. Had to borrow a pound from a lovely Scottish couple to be able to afford the car park.

Far too hilly. Spoiled a nice walk. There were also no facilities at the summit, not even a coffee shop.

I recently hiked Striding Edge in the Lake District and it was the worst experience of my life. Firstly, I had to go to the bathroom halfway through the hike and there were no facilities. I ended up having to go behind a rock and it was extremely inconvenient. I mean, how could they not have a single toilet on this entire hike? Do they expect people to just hold it in or something? Ridiculous.
Secondly, all the other hikers on the trail seemed to be annoyingly competent and made the hike look way too easy, bunch of smug gits! To make matters worse, my girlfriend was complaining the entire time about how hard the hike was and how she wished we had just stayed at the hotel. Ugh, some people just can't handle a little bit of exercise.
Girlfriend: "Babe, I can't do it. My legs are killing me. Can we please turn back? I'll do anything you want if you just agree."
Me: "Don't be such a wuss, love. We can't turn back now. We're almost there. Plus, it's not that slippery. You're just not paying attention to where you're walking."
Girlfriend: "I am paying attention. It's just so slippery. And what's that smell?"
Me: "It's probably just the smell of defeat. You're just not cut out for these types of hikes, love."
And to top it all off, the views from the top were not even that impressive. I mean, seriously? That's all we get after all this hard work? A mediocre view of some hills and a lake? I've seen better views from my backyard. I would not recommend this hike to anyone. Save yourself the hassle and just stay at home. Trust me, you won't be missing out on anything.

If you fancy scrambling, go up via striding edge from Patterdale/Glenridding then down via the edge that sounds like a squirrel. If you don't fancy scrambling walk up via the Youth Hostel then take the path right via a couple of other peaks/or Sticks pass to the top and back if you fancy. Always carry emergency food, water and a jacket. Even during a heatwave.

A group of 6 of us tackled Helvellyn on a fine day in early June. Our route was from Glenriidding, up to the "Hole-in-the-Wall" and via Striding Edge to the summit, then down Swirral Edge and back to Glenridding via the path alongside Red Tarn Beck. Total distance 13.6km and time taken 7 hours including stops. It's a steady climb from Glenridding but not strenuous until Striding Edge where you do have to be very careful. There is scrambling over rocks and it is tricky in places as the route is not obvious. We ended up going down quite a long way at one point and then had to climb up again. However there is a way along the top of the ridge if you are very sure-footed. There's also a final climb at the end which is very steep but with lots to hold on to and you just have to continue upwards and pick your way to the top. It's absolutely worth the effort as once you get to the summit the views are amazing.
The descent on Swirral Edge is hard as well but nothing like on the ascent. Going the way we went back to Glenridding is a long slog so would recommend taking the path from the end of Red Tarn which leads back to the "Hole-in-the-Wall" to rejoin the path you came up on. We returned to our cars very tired but with a huge sense of achievement and it was a superb, exhilarating walk.

We started the walk from Glenrodding. The way we went up was via striding edge and then back down through the valley behind swirells edge. I can’t remember the name of the route exaclty but as you reach the summit it is the path which takes you back to Glenridding but alongside swirrels edge. This route back provided a fantastic view of the otherside of Hevellyn, as well as waterfalls by the disused slate mine.
Car parking is £8 for all day, which I would recommend doing as it says 4-5 hours on websites, however the majority of people took 5-6 hours once you have stopped off etc.
There is toilets with are 50p. Various convienence stores nearby. After we went to Aira falls to see the waterfalls, which was a lovely way to finish a fantastic day.
Be careful as the climb up Stirding edge is a challenge. I would strongly recommend in watching some YouTube videos before you go up either of the edges, just to get an idea of what you are about to do.

Hi, I am doing this walk via the edges in July. I am reasonably fit but am a bit concerned about the final ascent up to the summit from stridingedge. It looks like a steep wall of rock going off the photos. I don't have that much experience on the fells. Any tips? Thanks

Hello, it does look steep but it’s manageable - we’ve done the full circle several times in various weather conditions and some of them with kids aged between 13-16 and adults from moderately fit to fit and it was absolutely fine. The ascend from the Striding edge looks steeper but it’s actually easier than the descend from the peak on the opposite edge, but in good weather conditions and light to no wind both are perfectly doable. Key is proper hiking footwear with good traction thick sole and ankle support. You can bring poles to steady yourself if you want but you’ll be fine ☺️

Has anyone ever taken kids up here?

You will see (fit) kids walking up from Swirls car park. It’s a stiff climb and you would only want to do it with sensible kids (it would be possible to have a nasty fall from the path near the top), but there is a proper and sensibly wide path and lots of flat space at the top of Helvellyn to picnic and enjoy the view. The route is a walk, not a scramble.
If going from swirls car park is the route easy to follow?

Hi Samantha,
Not sure if you have visited yet, but we took the Swirls car park route, there is a clear path all the way up, would be very hard to get lost. 😊

We are planning to climb with our 3 boys age 8,11 & 13. Just wondering what route people recommend they are good climbers we did Snowden with them in May. We are staying in Pooley Bridge so will be driving so recomendations for where to park as well would be great. Thanks

I climbed this with my 8 and 10 year old who are good climbers and not scared of challenging parts. However I still think they are a bit young to do striding edge from Glenridding.
We drove to Keswick from Pooley Bridge then parked in the Thirlmere car park. Really enjoyed the climb and just felt it was a bit safer than striding edge way at this age.

Anybody know how to get there with train or public transportation from London?

Fred Appleton-Kerry-Eed

I hear there is a frequent helicopter service from Oxford Circus to Scarfell Pike if that helps.
Free Parking? Being a tight Yorkshireman I don't like to pay for stuff like Parking especially on Common Land.
Does anyone know of any places where you can park for free on the roads around Hellvelyn on either side of it? Are there pull in's along the road where you can park for free?
I've not been for a while but seem to recall that there were unless I am getting mixed up with Scafell Pike.
If there are no places to park for free are there any car parks that will allow you to buy a ticket for two or three days? Or do you have to return to your car each day and buy another ticket because that would really annoy me? It would also annoy me if I am not able to pay by card.

theres a farmers field further down the road that you can park , also some of the paid carparks were actually free due to work being done after the storm last year so you could try those first

We've done several challenging walks with our kids including Snowdon when youngest was 6 and almost got blown off the top when walking back down in 50mph winds!!!! and some hike climbs in the USA this year. Our kids are 12 and 8. They are definitely up for it but I'm concerned about the height and scary
striding edge for my 8 year old daughter. (And myself to be honest) my Hubbie whose seasoned at this kind of stuff is keen for us all to go next may. Any thoughts and tips please?

Hi. I’ve seen people of all ages walk across. All you need to consider is the weather. Wet and slippery is ok but strong winds are a problem. All the way across there are lower paths that take you down below the exposed ridge so it is passable at all times.
Enjoy!

Probably best to do some online research. Look for bus routes and timetables for Keswick to Windermere. Good luck. You'll love the Lake District.
